Maybe we need to change the spelling of "night " to "nacht" ?

Saucery · 28/04/2024 14:00

They want protests and clashes and media footage of it all, don’t they, in local election week. To claw back the votes of racists. Disgusting.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 14:00

My guess is that they will aim to deport and then make the individual challenge it. In practice this is hard. The court may rule that you need to returned but in the meantime you have hit your headline by the flight going.

And turn away those Conservatives who are disgusted by this

In which case they’re making yet another misjudgment. It’ll lose them more votes than they gain.

IClaudine · 28/04/2024 14:06

I bet there is a celebratory thread on MN next week, started by some bot or other.

It's probably not a great strategy to rely on racists. Being terminally dim, they can't be trusted to always do the right thing. Like register to vote.

Also, I have my suspicions that noise and fury do not equate to majority.

It's hard to call isn't it. I mean we're in a little lefty bubble here. And the rightwing frothers are in another. So we both find it hard to predict what motivates the other side. I don't think they are playing to racists exactly. The votes in the locals which are going to Reform have already been lost. This is part of the longer term GE 'strategy' though that's a big word for whatever the fuck they are doing.

There are loads of floating voters who think Rwanda seems like a bad idea but don't know what Labour are going to do and think immigration is important. That's the vote the Tories want to attract. So visibly doing something is useful as it attracts attention away from Labour and makes it look like they are the party that will fix immigration. They have the advantage there because they are in government and when it is delayed or prevented they can say it was all those lefties that stopped us. Hence labour saying no you crack on...let's see how this goes.

It may have a marginal impact but could also backfire horribly. They are clearly going to cherrypick people to get on a flight who are dodgy as hell and will garner no public sympathy. All Muslim men presumably, but they can't be Albanian as we already return Albanians to Albania. So Eritreans, Libyans and Syrians aged 18-30. Could be Afghans who account for the majority of recent asylum seekers, but it's less than three years since we fucked their entire country by leaving it in the hands of the Taliban so they may still get the sympathy vote. Us public are fickle buggers. We don't like it if actual victims of torture get maltreated. Or anyone kills themself. And of course popular opinion in Rwanda could turn if they overplay the 'they're dodgy as hell and we don't want them here' card. Even a president who gets 99% of the vote in elections might find it hard to explain why he's importing a load of confirmed rapists and murderers.

As someone said ages back on this thread whoever is advising Sunak must really hate him.

AdamRyan · 28/04/2024 14:31

To be honest I see a lot of the Conservative actions as desperately trying to provoke Labour to break cover.

The equivalent of a 5 year old progressing from calling their sibling "wee wee bumhole" to pushing them, to poking them with a stick.

Labour aren't rising to it and its going to end in Tory tears.

Even so, you can do some back of the fag packet calculations.

Starting with , 1 in 3 people you meet won't vote. So they can be safely ignored. Doesn't matter how passionate or vocal they are, if they don't vote, they don't count.

Growing up our neighbour was a bit of a working class tory. With a lot of views. Only his wife let slip to my DM he never voted. Didn't know how to. Meanwhile she once slyly voted Labour while taking her grandaughter to nursery.

In the 2019 election, I was fascinated to see a very elderly gentleman casting his first ever vote. He was asking the officials if he was doing the right thing putting it in the box. Election etiquette prevented me from chatting, but I remain fascinated at what had prompted him to vote so late in life.

Statistically I guess that probably wasn't an anti-Boris vote but we can dream!

I can see the Tweet now.

1000 "illegal migrants" rounded up

I don't know why but when the call them "illegal immigrants" it makes my blood boil.

The rest wiles me up but the fact no one interviewing them challenges their incorrect terminology which they use incorrectly as propaganda really boils my piss Angry

Piggywaspushed · 28/04/2024 14:36

Have they definitely got the airline sorted to do this?

I don't think the country is rising to it either.

For all their arslikhan, the papers will print stories people want to read. And right now people want to read about the torture and excoriation of the Tory party. Why ? Because the Tory party have taught them to enjoy torture and excoriation and quite frankly the public are seeing it's a lot better with the tories.

What was the fairy tale about the queen who declared a punishment that ironically turned out to be her own ?

Inspector Gadget Cartoon GIF

And the relevant - and trained - Home Office staff.

Bearing in mind the only defence a person will have against charges of assault, A/GBH and murder will be that they were following the approved training.

The indications from the civil service unions were none of his has been discussed yet. And since I am sure they are really keen to give the scheme their full support they will need to ensure that every aspect is carefully planned. That could take a few months that no competent government could possibly take issue with.

There is a film in this. And possible a childrens cartoon series. "Rish! Races"

I think it's a bit about trying to provoke Labour AND a lot about trying to fend off Braverman, Jenrick & the unholy alliances within their own party.

It's sheer desperation to persuade them to stick with him - less stop the boats, more stop the letters.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 15:02

I don't know. The Rwanda scheme reminds me of "repatriation now" and the National Front.

It doesn't seem to me after last week that there is a lot to stop other non ECHR compatible legislation being passed which can apply to UK citizens. The key thing about law is that you can and do challenge it but timely application is critical because of government power is so great.

I hope Labour do not take the ECHR lite approach of the Conservatives. It seems too tempting really for any political party.

user8800 · 28/04/2024 15:17

The reality is, this rounding up of asylum seekers will make lots of far right tory voters happy

Not pleasant, but true

Yes but they’re going to vote for Reform so Sunak’s wasting his time.

SerendipityJane · 28/04/2024 15:55

Our Mate Phil did a deep dive into the tectonic plates of the polls a few weeks ago. The slicing and dicing showed quite clearly that chasing Reform votes is - for Tories - an absolute waste of time because they are votes that Labour were never going to get.

The Tories have turned Mrs Thatchers "egg society" (anyone who's read Ken Livingstones excellent "If Voting Changed anything ..." will get the allusion) into Sunaks "egg timer society" - almost the inverse.

£10 on the tories not being the official opposition next parliament may not be such a bad investment.

fabio12 · 28/04/2024 16:05

(Re the Irish sending back refugees to UK) The irony of this would be that they can't because the EU declared UK an unsafe country because they deport migrants to Rwanda...I do wonder if we haven't changed our laws here but left the rest of the world taking us off certain safe lists as a result.

BIossomtoes · 28/04/2024 16:18

Maybe that was the intention.
