As an act of self harm I read today's rightwing press attempts to smear AR again. Apparently she was nominated as a community governor for schools twice by LibDem members if Stockport council. The utter b*h, giving up her time for free to help her community like that. And she let her brother stay in her house rentfree according to her Dad, whilst also spending time there doing it up, whilst her premature baby was in hospital for 8m. So helping her family, dealing with the stress of a seriously ill child and keeping her home together.

Could she be any more depraved? This is worse than the time she went to the.opera.

Hold on, they bought Cameron back from the dead into their party!

Although, are they now saying Brexit is a failure too? Interesting pivot...

bombastix · 28/04/2024 11:43

Since Cameron is the FS is this not also absurd? I mean blaming your colleagues who are still part of the Cabinet is pretty rum

DuncinToffee · 28/04/2024 11:45

More dodgy shenanigans

Why is Chris Philip doing media today? Surely he should be in a room with a big atlas doing his revision.

It's indicative of the schizophrenia within the party.

Notonthestairs · 28/04/2024 12:13

"It's indicative of the schizophrenia within the party."
Took the words out of my mouth.

That Badenoch article is quite amusing - funny that there was no mention of Gove's contribution to the shitshow, we hold all the cards, had enogh of experts etcetc. One of the few times I agreed with Cameron was when he highlighted Gove as a mendacious twat.

People blame the Tories, it wouldn't matter who they had as PM, though it doesn't help that Sunak keeps banging on about reduced waiting lists and more staff... because that is simply not what people are experiencing in RL.

He just comes across as utterly out of touch.

Spot on.
Waiting list may be getting shorter, inflation may be down, the economy may be growing, and migrants prior to 2016 may have been net contributors to the UK.

None of that matters at all, when it is repeatedly contradicted by the people you need to vote for you's lived experience.

You'd have thought they would have learnt some lessons from Brexit, but apparently not.

Yep

I don't think many people will buy it. Its a very odd tack

So she is attacking the Foreign Secretary?

Would love to see the Cabinet meeting next week

DuncinToffee · 28/04/2024 13:23

Fucking hell, this is horrific

Bloody hell. Shades of the 1930s. That can’t be legal, can it?

If you look carefully you will see that this bill was retrospective; that means it would apply to those already in the country, I think.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 13:31

Here; thus any asylum seeker without a decision is covered.

This Act applies to any decision by a decision-maker relating to the removal of a person to the Republic of Rwanda that is made on or after the day on which the Rwanda Treaty enters into force, irrespective of when the person arrived in the United Kingdom.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 13:32

For this purpose, the decision maker is the Home Office.

But rounding up and imprisoning innocent people? This has gone too far now.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 13:33

It won't be classed as imprisonment. The Home Office can detain you as an asylum seeker and that is lawful.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 13:36

At some point it won't be lawful to detain, and that point varies by the individual but it will be long enough to get s flight out.

I think this may backfire on Sunak. I certainly can't see it "helping" him/the Cons in any way. For a start, the optics of people being forcibly taken away from public places will be terrible and that's before anyone gets round to assessing the dubious legality of it all. 😡

bombastix · 28/04/2024 13:43

Oh no. It's Morton's fork. If you don't turn up to your ordained meeting with the authorities then you will definitely be on the list for Rwanda and if you do, you may be detained.

But let's be clear. The Home Office has always had the power to detain those seeking asylum. And if you don't turn up or cooperate that will undermine your claim.

Bigcoatlady · 28/04/2024 13:46

Yeah it's still detention for the purposes of the ECHR, and you can still apply for a writ of habeas corpus. That's why they need to act fast as each detainee will get legal advice and seek an injunction against removal whilst the constitutional legality of the Rwanda Act is tested. Sunak has said he'll ignore any injunctions granted by the ECtHR, he can't ignore injunctions from our own courts although they will expedite hearings. Expect to hear from the SC some time this fumner if parliament can actually declare a third country safe as a matter of fact - but if they say that's bollocks they were warned by absolutely fucking everyone. And if the govt ignores an ECtHR injunction and someone gets removed to Rwanda and that's later deemed unlawful by the ECtHR they'll just require the UK to bring them back. There was a good explainer on the bbc website earlier in the week.

In the meantime assume emergency applications to the courts here asking them to find removal is unlawful for domestic legal reasons and nothing to do with ECHR rights which should be easy. They are just gearing up for a stand off with the courts.

Current third PM since last election starting a fight over a policy not in the manifesto and trying to paint other branches of govt that stop him or delay him doing this as enemies of the people. It will play well to some Tory members but that's it. .

cakeorwine · 28/04/2024 13:46

I can see the Tweet now.

1000 "illegal migrants" rounded up

IClaudine · 28/04/2024 13:46

That is fucking disgusting,

Bigcoatlady · 28/04/2024 13:48

IClaudine · 28/04/2024 13:46

Yup.

IClaudine · 28/04/2024 13:48

Hopefully there will be plenty of lefty-lawyer-enemies-of-the-people types waiting to take up these cases.

cakeorwine · 28/04/2024 13:48

So rounded up and detained?

Where?
How much will that cost?
How long for?
