Ofcourse they will

Suspended MPs set to pocket up to £66,000 each for hanging on until General Election

https://x.com/mikeysmith/status/1784307850157625790

MPs suspended for misconduct get nothing if they step down and trigger a by-election.

If they cling on until the election, they get four months' wages AND double the level of statutory redundancy pay.

No wonder Khan has to travel in an armoured car*

I am willing to bet some of those deranged FB posters post on MN.

*According to the Daily Mail. Not sure if true or not!

newnamethanks · 27/04/2024 22:39

That's not surprising though is it? Look at the dogged Tories on here, banging on about beer and Angela Rayner. No arguments, just whinging whataboutery and slavish cut n pasting. Victorian writers were paid by the word, I assume the same for them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/04/2024 22:54

PM Sunak's Death by 1000 Cuts plan is going well.😆

The BBC commentator said Poulter's defection risked the electorate "seeing the Conservatives as a party fraying at the edges". It's gone way past that! They're beyond ripping at the seams. The Tory party is hanging in tatters from PM Sunak's waist.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

AdamRyan · 27/04/2024 22:57

Sunak is so fucked
What do you think will happen post Thursday?

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/04/2024 23:04

Has he given his estimate of council losses yet? How many councillors did they lose last time?

336 - about 25%

They'd have to be going some to get higher numbers but 25% loss would take them to 760 ish

Driving to my parents the other week I passed some Ulez protestors in a group by a roundabout. They looked unhinged.

Except for a very tiny number of people I can’t see a reason for being anti ULEZ unless you are unhinged. Most cars and vans are exempt anyway and the very poorest that people keep banging on about tend not to be able to afford to run a car anyway.

It’s the same with 15min cities, cycle infastructure and LTN. Most people when asked want amenities close by, and for children to be able to use the streets safely. Not to mention the fact that more sustainable forms of transport will usually mean people are getting more exercise.

Have they started expectation management yet?

grannycake · 28/04/2024 05:52

The Facebook groups that sprung up following the 20 mph were linked back to Tory councillors/workers in the North of England so I'm not surprised at the ULEZ news

Alexandra2001 · 28/04/2024 06:50

So Sunak prioritised tax cuts over compensation over the contaminated blood scandal.

..and Tory MPs supported him.

Similar to the post office too, holding out as long as possible.

They really are the scum of the earth.

Yes, they’re saying that if Street and Houchen win on Thursday it’s a success regardless of anything else that happens.

Sunak will have his 94th relaunch and still no one will listen to the half pint.

Yes, they’re saying that if Street and Houchen win on Thursday it’s a success regardless of anything else that happens.

The polling I looked at, suggested that both are not that likely to win.

I love the cognitive dissonance in this article

The famous European city dubbed one of the most 'walkable' for tourists | Travel News | Travel | Express.co.uk

"Barcelona is a much-loved tourist destination, but in recent years it’s gone even further to welcome in visitors.
In 2022, the city announced plans to become pedestrianised by 2032.
The initiative is designed to reduce traffic, air pollution, and prioritise pedestrians. In 2016 the local government brought in “superblocks”, known as “superilles” in the Catalan city, which diverted traffic to the outskirts of the city.
The policy was aimed at prioritising space for plazas, playgrounds and sports facilities."

It sounds a bit familiar to the idea behind 15 minute cities....

This city is one of Europe's finest and a haven for tourists.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 28/04/2024 08:12

I live in an accidental 15 minute city in Sweden and I really don't get the drama around them. They fantastic.

My small town is around half an hour away from the next nearest town and an hour away from the nearest city. We have everything we need in our little town. Cinema, bowling alley, swimming pool, healthcentre, ambulance/fire/police station, primary and secondary schools, adult education centre, library, supermarkets, diy shop, vets, library etc. You name it, we have it. Apart from guard towers on the exit roads to prevent people leaving, we don't have them.

I appreciate it even more now I can't drive.

bombastix · 28/04/2024 08:55

I despair about the UK on 15 minute cities. It's a sign really of how degraded things have got here that all the narrative about them as a conspiracy got going. I actually see perfectly capable people indulging in it; which is sad really. I live in a part of London where there is conspiracy, conspicuous hatred of Khan and nutters cutting down ULEZ cameras. Tbh I cannot wait to move. I suspect it is easier to find a place that is more in line with my wants than expecting it to change!

fabio12 · 28/04/2024 09:26

It's odd but I realised that I am actually really hopeful that when Labour get in all this weird anger will stop. I am hugely expecting Labour to stop all of the nasty cruel policies in their tracks and start talking more positively about the country again. The tories have gone from the Nasty Party to the downright Cruel Party.

Interested in the Barcelona link. I went twice in my 20's and both times friends I was with were mugged, so I have avoided going back. I'd be encouraged to try if there was less traffic as it added to the confusion and one was a bag snatched by a guy on a motorbike. The 15min city idea in our area was quite convoluted whenever it was put in the paper and it looked as though it had been designed as if people would be living in ghettos; to cross into another section of the city meant a charge, for example, which had people who's kids were at various schools very upset and most people who don't live in the very centre would have to cross 2 zones to do food shopping. I think there will be a lot of work to put it to the public again. It's a shame because I do agree with the idea of accessibility.

fabio12 · 28/04/2024 09:35

I actually remember now you weren't charged to go into another area, it was forbidden unless you went on a new bypass they were going to build around the city, so you'd have to drive out to that and go around and back in rather than down 2 roads, for example. I think a lot of people struggled because the area they want us all to go onto is often busy as it is and full of roadworks and accidents most mornings. Congestion is a huge issue though - largely I think because it is a grammar area and housing costs within the city are too high for many parents and low paid workers who need to get into the town for retail jobs.

newnamethanks · 28/04/2024 09:39

Same as MrTiddles really. London no longer suited me once my children were grown and settled so I looked for a small green city with all I required within walking distance. Found one and moved to it. I like it a lot. Evetything I need is reachable in 10 minute walk, city centre 10 minutes, countryside 10 minutes and no driving or parking to worry about. What's the problem?

newnamethanks · 28/04/2024 09:42

Hmm. Just read your post fabio. I see your point, that sounds unpleasant although unachievable.

That sounds good. Actively looking to move. Where are you based now, if you don't mind saying? I really am fed up of living in places dominated by cars. Like lots of people I moved out of central London for more space, but the actual public environment is quite a lot worse...

fabio12 · 28/04/2024 09:44

Yes, I'm lucky enough to live near the centre and can walk to most places I need to get to. I did feel for the parents in the neighbouring villages though as the bus system often leaves kids on the side of a busy road and they can't get into school without parents driving them. Really they need to sort out a lot of other things before re-proposing it and I think people would feel less worried.

With so few copies sold, do we think they might become something of a collectors item?

No, it'll be knocking around in discount shops with ever-decreasing prices for ages.
