It just keeps getting better. 😭

There is now another reason for the Rwanda scheme to fail.

Apparently the Home Office needs people to "volunteer" for an overseas posting to Kigali to oversee the system.

Hopefully the Tories nasty habit of blaming the civil service, calling them "the blob" and the machinery of the deep state is about to backfire on them

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2024 19:28

You can't make it up Confused

@SerendipityJane hope I wasn’t coming across as a smart Alec but it’s genuinely been my experience. I was just trying to explain why Fujitsu people might have been updating raw data.

@BestIsWest as someone trained in audit that makes me shudder.

Always with a proper audit trail and change request process wherever I’ve worked.

Phew

InMySpareTime · 26/04/2024 21:05

Is that the same civil service they're planning to cut 2.5% of GDP worth of savings from to fund the military?
Yeah, there'll be loads of goodwill there after that...

The same Civil Service that is facing funding cuts because of the budget last year as well.

Well I imagine that they will have to pay the relatively humble level of civil servant they need a lot more in allowances to get them to go. Otherwise nobody is going.

I found myself idly wondering this myself.

Whilst I imagine employment contracts for the civil service are quite broad, I doubt they can be stretched to "here's your tickets, you're off to Rwanda for a year matey".

(If the vaccination regime is what it was when I went to that neck of the woods, you needs good 2-3 months headstart. And the yellow fever jab really isn't a party).

Also - as the gentleman on QT rather helpfully pointed out. All any asylum seeker now has to do is claim to be from DRC (because there's no way to check they aren't) and the while scheme will again run into the brick wall that is the courts.

SerendipityJane · 27/04/2024 09:35

... also, if the conflict between Rwanda and Congo is even 1% of what it was 30 years ago, then they are being sent to a war zone. I wonder what the rules are around that.

It would be deeply ironic if the first use of the "Safety of Rwanda" law was to enable the UK government to nullify it's duty of care and peoples contracts to force them to work in a war zone.

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2024 09:44

The interesting thing I saw on QT was Philp's sneer when the audience member suggested family might come from Congo on the boats. I could just see him thinking ' don't be silly, you can't get a boat from Congo, man'.

There must be a factory churning out Thick Tories somewhere.

They couldn't force people, it would be volunteers only. When the war in Iraq ended they needed civil servants to go out there, it was strictly voluntary.

Sadly, I think there would be a small number who would volunteer for Rwanda. 😕

ETA: maybe Foreign Office staff could be sent, though?

BIossomtoes · 27/04/2024 09:56

Sadly I think you’re right, particularly if there was a house deposit size bonus attached.

DuncinToffee · 27/04/2024 11:03

Braverman was impressed with the interior design of the houses that were built and you can go on safari, so people supporting the Rwanda bill should be queuing up for the jobs.Wink

I'd love for her to be first in line.

Liz Truss book enters bestseller list in 70th place with 2,228 copies sold 😂

Zonder · 27/04/2024 12:08

Wow I'm surprised she sold that many!

BIossomtoes · 27/04/2024 12:09

I’m amazed how few copies you need to sell to get on the bestseller list.

Interesting - I'm Scottish Borders & I just had not 1 but 2 Tory door-knockers in the last 30mins (having lived here 15 years & had no one ever!). As I was not 'presentable' I simply said: 'good luck, you'll need it' to the 1st. The 2nd one, I decided to channel BJ's lack of care re appearance & actually had a 15 mins chat. He is under the impression it's still a straight race between Tory & SNP & 'Labour is irrelevant'. He told a story of Leadsom being in the area giving a dinner explaining why Labour were awful & said how disappointed he was she'd not tailored her speech more locally. I said I'd had concerns about SNP Named Person policy & current Hate Speech bill. He heartily agreed. But then I added: my concern with voting Conservative (I have enough to keep going all day but he looked about 18 & I felt slightly sorry for him) is not just the bunch of muppets currently in Westminster (he actually giggled...) but the fact that Lamont votes with them & also failed to answer either of my letters about SNP NP or HC policy. If my local MP doesn't appear to listen how can he command more respect locally than the distant Westminster?
I ended by telling him I would 'probably' vote Labour. And that it was a 'further' waste of resources to send 2 folk round the sane streets, 1 after another.

BIossomtoes · 27/04/2024 12:19

Blimey, he doesn’t take much notice, does he? I reckon Scotland will turn into a sea of red when we eventually get to vote.

medianewbie · 27/04/2024 12:26

@BIossomtoes yes, I think both SNP & Tory are in for a (well deserved) plummet here.
I did say: 'oooh, 2 of you in 20 mins, is Rishi going to name the date soon?'
Of course, I got a standard reply but my feedback was 'tell him from me to get a wriggle on while he still can'. I enjoyed it.

itsgettingweird · 27/04/2024 12:41

Media that's brilliant!

I'm actually in awe of them still thinking Labour are irrelevant. They really do walk around with their eyes and ears shut

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/04/2024 12:50

I had an interesting conversation this morning. All the cosying up Truss is doing with MAGA seems to be leading to the narrative that "the financial crash was happening anyway, she was just the patsy".

Essentially nothing to see here.
