How do these people expect to lead a nation?

Surely the Tories would love the association with D Day.

I think I’ll be tempted to have a self imposed Mumsnet ban for the duration of the campaign as I can’t see it being good for my blood pressure.

Just stay on this thread?

Also, aren't they trying to tell people it's a safe country legally, so if they are able to do that despite everyone knowing it isn't at all safe, of course they'd just say "oh they'll be fine" - if they get away with what they want there is no "fine print".

QT was cracking tonight. Chris Philp was all you would expect and then some. Streeting did a decent job but the NHS guy smashed it.

Quite.
Philip seems to have voted in favour of sending asylum seekers to a country that he thinks is in civil war and yet also "safe".
Remarkable.

Yeah it was really good. Audience asked great questions too.
I really liked Streeting agreeing with Munira Wilson too. Don't often see politicians backing each other up across party like that.

I also listened to TRiP yesterday where they were talking about polling suggesting that the "war on woke" has stopped appealing to voters. That cheered me up too.

Nearly Eighteen Thousand Domestic Abuse Crimes Missing from Statistics - Domestic Abuse Commissioner

17,600 fewer domestic abuse crimes have been recorded in statistics published today, after police were instructed to deliberately count fewer crimes.  In June 2023, the Home Office instructed the police to only count one crime for each time a victim co...

I don't think people care about the war on woke when they are struggling financially. If you are, it's an every day reminder of what matters.

Probably the people who are engaged on the war on woke or similar culture wars are those who are comfortable and can afford this focus.

I dread bringing up any gender issues here. But the reality is that feeling poor is always going to override that as an issue for the majority of voters.

Culture wars are rarified. The moment Labour stopped indulging cultural imperatives with Starmer was the day I knew they were back on track to being a serious party. The Conservatives have fallen into the same trap by assuming people care about this stuff above their wallets. They do not.

I hope there are some more serious announcements on policy like the railways. That was clearly done for the May elections where it will be popular in London and SE commuters. The commuters are in Tory seats and they are seriously pissed off with the railways so it's a vote winner for Labour and well timed

How many of the 18,000 offences are Tory MPs, councillors or other elected officials in the Conservative party?

IClaudine · 26/04/2024 09:02

The Tories say they are going to come down like a ton of bricks on shoplifters, apparently.

I guess there is a magic police station somewhere in the fairy wood which is going to conjure up the hundreds of extra officers that would need?

Rubbish. What is going to happen is that you will have to swipe your card to enter a supermarket and all the goods will be in locked displays. No one will take cash. Food gets more expensive as this is the market solution.

Piggywaspushed · 26/04/2024 09:17

There are already supermarkets in some areas where you can't get out without swiping your receipt. Great for the environment, obviously, all those paper receipts.

The largest number of convicted shoplifters are women living in poverty...

bombastix · 26/04/2024 09:25

I predict supermarkets will have gym swipe doors linked to your card. This is quite easy to do.

I also think it will make shopping harder for those who are poor. Supermarkets will just not see the profit in it. They are already preferring places where the crime is low. Many middle class people just get their shopping delivered and would barely think about these changes. It will happen.

Given the apparent inability to prosecute rape, what chance of ever getting a shoplifter into court? They really are fucking idiots.

Oh, Victor Adebowale on QT - can we clone him and fill the Commons with him, please? What a man.

Eve · 26/04/2024 09:44

Not surprised that largest number of convicted shoplifters are women living in poverty...

the tube station I use regularly has staff at the barriers checking cards are swiped and I have been stopped to make sure I have swiped properly. Yesterday a group of about 5/6 lads pushed their way though the barriers and run off, and the staff made no move. 🙄

fabio12 · 26/04/2024 10:08

I just watched QT on iplayer. I loved how simple Victor made it, really showing up the clear cruelty people are turned off by in the Tory manifesto. People have had enough of being made to feel humans are part of some number crunching machine with the Tories presiding over the controls.

I was also interested in his charge the landlords idea. I was a landlord in a seaside town not so long ago and they had made it illegal to be a landlord without a licence. As a landlord you had to allow inspections to the property and resolve issues within a set amount of time. It allowed the tenants to complain to another party if the landlord was not looking after the property fairly. I was all in favour of that and it did stop some slum landlords in the area, although it wasn't failsafe. I think some slum landlords went underground but at least it legalises the issue, so if the police were funded they could crack down on this. It also meant landlords had a record against their name if they had poor properties and could have criminal convictions against them. THIS is what I think we need to implement. I now live in a town with real social housing issues but over half of the housing stock is rented to students. Terrible conditions, some even without running water and mould, rented to overseas students who can't visit before paying huge deposits and unsure of the law. If landlords were held to account we would see a lot selling up because they wouldn't want to pay out to fix their shoddy properties up to a habitable standard before being allowed to legally rent them.

Meanwhile - for reasons that will never be explained, and for which no one will be found responsible - it emerges that Birmingham Councils much vaunted state-of-the-art ERP system lacks the ability to audit

The immediate implications of this are

a) if you turned up with an "unpaid bill" of £x-thousand, they have no way of ensuring it's genuine

b) If you owe them £x-thousand, and asked them to prove it, they couldn't

What I didn't understand after the Oracle disaster was why the government aren't suing the computer companies? Both in this and Horizon case?

countrygirl99 · 26/04/2024 10:55

From that article it looks like the implementation rather than the software was the problem. It would be interesting to know if any management consultants were involved in the project. At work (private sector, very large company) we have systems that have been implemented appallingly with apparently no thought about how they will actually work in real life.
