I really hope that when Starmer makes his victory speech after the GE that he speaks plainly about the hard work ahead due to the scorched earth actions of the outgoing government.

They are very regal.

I do appreciate all the pet photos - it's a lovely diversion from the nonsense.

Notonthestairs · 24/04/2024 09:11

The nonsense being our country's politics - not these threads!

Elodie9 · 24/04/2024 12:47

@Zonder I really think he will.
I have chosen to find out a bit about him and everything keeps coming back to him being a decent, straight forward and loyal family man who is held in high esteem by long standing colleagues and friends.
I think that he is very hard working and extremely intelligent.
I hope and pray that we can all get behind him and just stop the stupid "politicking " , if that is the right word for it (I'm not exactly sure what I mean except to just get on and govern unlike the current situation.)
I simply don't understand why the press do not call out the bare faced lies. I get that there are controlling owners but does truth no longer matter? We need a new John Pilger (RIP) for those old enough to remember him. I think he said something along the lines of journalists in the main stream media bearing some of the responsibility for the devastation and lives lost in Iraq by not challenging and exposing the lies of Blair and Bush , for example.
I was so sad yesterday about the situation in the channel and the Rwanda bill being passed on St George's day. I am fearful for our democracy ,even more now than I was before.

LlynTegid · 24/04/2024 12:52

@Elodie9 I agree about fear for democracy, at least there is a chance of it being rescued if the Tories lose in the general election.

Zonder · 24/04/2024 13:07

Totally agree @Elodie9

SerendipityJane · 24/04/2024 13:11

does truth no longer matter?

Did it ever ?

Did it ever ?

Yes. It definitely used to.

cardibach · 24/04/2024 13:15

Yes. It definitely used to.

I'm not so sure. I think that's harking back to a golden age that never existed.

Things are just more visible and reported on now.

Rishi Sunak's spokesperson confirms they're using two different methods for estimating the increase in defence spend vs amount they need to save

In other words they're massively exaggerating the increase (nowhere near £75m as Sunak claims) while playing down what has to be saved

Rishi Sunak's spokesperson also unable to explain why the Government is now claiming that sacking 70,000 civil servants will save almost £3 billion when Jeremy Hunt claimed just last October that it would only save £1 billion

And this urgent increase in defence spending is not due until 2030 anyway.

Now that's urgent for you...

Bloody hell.
I am baffled that Watson thought that this was in any way appropriate.

Just when you thought you were beyond being shocked. That’s an absolute disgrace.

Bigcoatlady · 24/04/2024 14:22

I wonder if anyone in Greater Manchester who is waiting to hear back whilst their burglary/sex offence/DV case is investigated would like to put in an FOI to find out how much is being spent on the 13 detectives investigating Angela Rayner's possible offences of err we're not entirely sure and if they are tax ones its not a police matter but we'll go fishing anyway. Oh and her neighbours are pissed off with her cos she got cross when they broke her front window so they are definitely unbiased witnesses whose decade old testimony should meet the best evidence test.

Bigcoatlady · 24/04/2024 14:27

Obviously as Greater Manchester has a Labour mayor crime rates there are prob really low so they have plenty of time for this kind of thing so that's good.

In which case why did he do it? He works in a Labour city, he was hardly going to get his knuckles rapped for declining the invitation.
