David Lloyd causing problems with cheap 14 day trial

Has anyone else experienced this at their branch of David Lloyd? Over the past few days I began to wonder about a few ‘unusual’ new faces, particularly one lady in a fitness class who didn’t smell too great. I heard a couple of other members talking, they thought ‘she’s here on some sort of scholarship’? But David Lloyd need to be careful, if they want to charge high fees this isn’t great for the customer experience.? Thank god it’s only temporary.

It's like Benidorm! Fury as upmarket David Lloyd lures 'undesirables'

Members of David Lloyd clubs are up in arms after the chain began to admit 'undesirables' on cheap temporary memberships who act like 'it's Benidorm' inside the premises, it was reported yesterday.

I’m just slightly mystified by the ‘£200 per month’ comments though, I don’t pay anything like that!

Yes thus is what I think. My gym is £35 a month. If I was paying 10x that, the very least I'd expect is some exclusivity. I did go to the family day at our local DL. We spent a fortune in the cafe. It was nice, but not 10x as nice as my gym, so people are literally paying to keep the rif raf out surely. I fancy going back to use the different pools and giant tap things.

Rich people can be just as , if not more, badly behaved than those less well off though.

I find it utterly perplexing that people think money = better behaved.

It’s different prices at different clubs. I’m at the worst DL in the country from a pov of facilities and it’s £145 a month I think for rackets level membership per person. We have no spa, no Blaze, tiny studio, no outdoor pool, 4 indoor tennis courts and barely and gym equipment. The gym is so small there’s three benches and one squat rack and then some machines and a 365. But so crowded.

i went to another DL when on holiday and it was mind blowing, spa area, outdoor pool, blaze studio, wet and dry changing rooms, the gym was 4x the size, 16 tennis courts, more classes, members lounge was 5x the size……it was two thirds the price I pay.

its all based on supply and demand for your local area, ie what the competition is.

Spot on. The people complaining about the discount have their heads so far up their arses that they can’t see what entitled brats they’re being.

User56785 · 22/04/2024 21:16

tried DL and wasn't impressed. There's always a mix of people, in my experience.

There's a mix of people alright. Especially in the changing rooms.

This is why I get annoyed at Waitrose doing offers. It brings in the wrong kind of people.

Youve got too much time on your hands if you care about the type of people who go to waitrose

Dollenganger333 · 22/04/2024 21:38

That was a joke @isabelboon

Dollenganger333 · 22/04/2024 21:41

I totally agree about badly behaved folk with money. Money does not buy class. This thread is ridiculous and goady.

I went to DL before I severely injured my back. I loved it. I didn't come across snooty people luckily.

UneFoisAuChalet · 22/04/2024 21:43

This type of offer would really piss me off it was happening at my gym.

Nothing to do with riff raff- everything to do with getting the equipment I want and booking classes.

I’ve been at my gym for 18 years so I’m a ‘regular’ and nothing irritates us ‘regulars’ more than January, when the classes are impossible to get in, the car park is heaving and the new members don’t get gym etiquette, because there are unspoken rules at the gym (no you can’t stand around with your five mates, using the rowing machine as a bench whilst you monopolise the pulley for over an hour). Resolutions are usually broken by March and it goes back to normal.

I blame management for registering a ridiculous amount of people based on the assumption they won’t actually use the facilities. I know it’s how they make their bread and butter but what is the point if members can’t use the place to workout?

Talkinpeace · 22/04/2024 21:50

DLL have always done those deals
as young Oliver would know
if he was actually a member at the club he is posing outside

Around of applause for your comment. The original commenter sounds like an absolute twat.

Grimchmas · 22/04/2024 22:12

I'm loving that the mail article is 90% just photos of stag and hen dos in benidorm 😆

My gym has two bloke in it who look for all the world like Russian Mafia members or something. Intimadating, even to me, and i don't usually get intimidated by much.

Turns out they are the nicest blokes to talk to, very respectful and great gym ettiquette!

Fenimore · 22/04/2024 22:17

I agree . Classism at its worst.

And I go to a council gym and it’s the best gym I’ve ever been to.

LordPercyPercy · 22/04/2024 22:22

I use the local council gym group and they're really good. Perfectiy normal people, clean and helpful staff.
And a tenth of the price doesn't hurt either.

Shityshitybangbang · 22/04/2024 22:38

I really hope you get over this! Love and hugs coming your way lol 😂 (sarcasm)

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 22/04/2024 22:43

Ooh cheers for the heads up OP. I’m a proper commoner but I’ve got £20 spare and I might be coming to a gym near you 👀.

HcbSS · 22/04/2024 23:00

If they are going to run this deal at all, it ought to be 'attach to a member', not a free for all.
My mum did the 14 day trial last summer and came with me, with the aim of seeing whether she would join (the whole point of the deal really). It was awful. Didn't help that we had really good weather, and it was like a Butlins holiday camp. People bringing their own food and alcohol in, even McDonalds, boring into the pool, being rude to the lifeguards, leaving towels everywhere and the changing rooms in a right state. Mum really didn't get the best impression (and she was a 'well-behaved' 14 day-er). I have no problem with people coming for trials. I would have done myself before I joined if it had been offered. But show some respect for the members, staff and facilities!

WeAreBorg · 22/04/2024 23:23

All gyms are intolerable these days. There’s too much grunting and sweaty bum crack issues but I have to go otherwise I’d have the muscle tone of a squid

I'm slightly mystified you have genuinely taken offense with the fact someone not as well off as you is trying a gym! And then has the total lack of self awareness to post about it.
How sad is your life that you begrudge those you view as below you?

Good for that woman going to a class to get fitter and healthier. Shame on you for not supporting that. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just support each other instead of tearing each other down?

Remind me, wasn't it the shelf stackers, refuse collectors, carers, lorry drivers, factory workers etc (none of which could likely afford a David Lloyd Membership) that kept everyone going not so long ago.....?
Bet you were first in the queue for your toilet roll and flour!!

Be grateful you don't need to depend on two week freebie to see the inside of a precious David Lloyd Gym.

Elitist tosh.

The very least you can expect for £300 is a jizz free jacuzzi ...

I read that as Jazz free jacuzzi. I like Jazz.

Trad jazz maybe. But freeform jazz is worse than jizz.

plumcake2924 · 23/04/2024 04:37

Where is this 2 week trial? I can't see it on the DL website?

daisychain01 · 23/04/2024 04:45

The last time I took up a David Lloyd special offer the car park was rammed full of those bloody white vans. Heaven forbid, the gym was full of dreadful tattooed builders and plumbers lowering the tone. One of them even had a Gingsters sausage roll poking out his back pocket 😂
