Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

He needs a slap!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 01/05/2024 09:06

And a damned good shaking! That sounds so frustrating, a crisis waiting to happen.

Gonners · 01/05/2024 19:04

Does he expect YOU to do it, @Kucinghitam? The voice of experience says "Beware The Thin End Of The Wedge!"

Thank fuck, no, he would never expect me to intervene! He (and everyone in his family) are just utterly useless at initiating any kind of "awkward" conversation/tough decisions.

I don't even understand why, because they are all lovely reasonable people who seem perfectly capable of having constructive discussions and doing what needs to be done - once they've got over the massive hump of reticence.

I recently had an email from Lovely #2 son (his, not mine, I am barren-by-choice) asking me to ask Sir if it was okay for Arsehole #1 son + psycho wife + teenage son to come and visit us during a trip to Europe. My response was "Have I got this straight? Your older brother, aged 55, asked you to ask me to ask his dad?" Yep, he said. We may have laughed rather a lot before telling the prat to ask his father direct.

I think that a change of status, or circumstances, can be very unsettling for many people - in business, it's why change management is needed.

In this case there's a lot of emotion tied up in it - family home, eventual loss of a parent. The studies I'm aware of tend to conclude that hoarding is extremely difficult to treat or resolve, because it's often rooted in very early memories and experiences.

Here, even while MrKuc and his siblings agree what needs happening, there's probably a part of them that can't help seeing it at severing links to their early life together.

Gonners · 02/05/2024 13:12

I've just solved Metazooa with my first guess. I should probably go and buy a lottery ticket, shouldn't I?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/05/2024 13:33

Yes. Or if you ever wanted to climb a mountain in a thunderstorm while waving a golf club, today's the day!

Britinme · 02/05/2024 14:05

Here too! Thunder, lightning and rain outside. I'm supposed to be going swimming (indoors not outdoors obv) in a couple of hours so I hope it's eased off by then. I pulled a muscle in my back yesterday so I'm hoping the swim will ease it as I can't get a massage until Tuesday. My massage therapist has magic fingers that sort things like that out very quickly. DH, who has all sorts of spinal issues, sees her too, more often than me because his needs are worse than mine - three ruptured discs in his lower back and a bulging one in his neck, and he has a mild scoliosis anyway.

Kucinghitam · 02/05/2024 14:34

Very good points @SqueakyDinosaur!

We've got a light breeze with low mist. I can see the sun through the haze. Sorry to be smug!

artant · 02/05/2024 15:47

Grey here but after done very heavy rain in the night I was just glad the ground was dry enough to get my mum safely to the car to go and vote.

Gonners · 02/05/2024 16:03

It's just grey here. Excitement of the day has been wandering down to the GP's surgery for MrG's Covid booster and spoiling our ballots in the Kent Police & Crime Commissioner election, with the comment that party affiliation has no place in policing.

I recently rewatched P&P on iPlayer and it was glorious.

The storm here last night was insane I was woken by a bang and all the seagulls and pigeons on the hospital roofs screeching and flying away. I wondered momentarily if a bomb had gone off. There followed an even louder boom along with the lightning. It was all very spectacular.

It woke me too. I staggered to the bathroom wondering why I could hear bangs and see flashes. We had a lot of thunderstorms here the summer it was really hot, I think it was two years ago. I was woken by the loudest clap of thunder I’ve ever heard.

I’m quite scared of lightning ever since watching a storm over the sea while sitting on the beach. I suddenly started to feel quite peculiar and spooked, and felt an urge to get off the beach as quickly as possible. I crawled off on my hands and knees as I was worried being upright would make me more of a target. My bf at the time said I was being ridiculous. When I reached the promenade and into the light, my he gasped because all of my hair was standing on end. He took a picture as we thought it was so funny, and went back to his. When I googled it I discovered it’s a sign of lightning about to strike you.

I wonder if the sudden peculiar feeling I had was the electricity or just something on an instinctual level.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 02/05/2024 23:14

Gosh VB!

MouseMinge · 03/05/2024 00:07

Wow, that is scary stuff!

Britinme · 03/05/2024 03:27

Goodness VB that's scary!

Kucinghitam · 03/05/2024 08:07

Like being chased by a Van de Graaff generator!

Blimey, I'd be scared of lightning too if that had happened to me!

SinnerBoy · 03/05/2024 09:41

Yes, what a close call!

Was there distant thunder? Could there be subsonic sound involved?

When we worked in Taiwan I used to get really freaked out just before earthquakes and felt as you described, 'peculiar and spooked'. It was absolutely horrible and one of the reasons we returned to the UK.

The thunder was quite close. In hindsight it was stupid to be sitting on the beach, but there were loads of people doing the same. There was cheering every time there was a lightning strike. I won’t be doing that again!

Here’s the photo…

This is a famous photo of brothers just before they got hit while hiking. A number of hikers got struck at the same time and one died. One of the brothers was ok but the other was on fire and had third degree burns. Terrifying!
