Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

There are going to the multiple groups sent to the new release site - these 7 are just the first plane load.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 11/06/2024 13:52

I always liked the look of those horses, glad there's work to increase their numbers.

Isn't this weather just total shit. Got to a job earlier and it was 8C and pouring with rain. FFS.

duc748 · 11/06/2024 14:40

I'm just pulling out of Euston and it looks like it's brightening up now I'm on my way home.

SqueakyDinosaur · 11/06/2024 15:26

@SinnerBoy yes, it's an excellent source for team newsletter quizzes - there's one on cubes of food that everyone liked when I made them do it, IIRC (and plenty more that people complained about!).

MouseMinge · 11/06/2024 20:13

The weather is just plain stupid. I was at the hospital today and when I left it was bright and sunny and almost like summer because when you're in the sun it is warm because it's June. Put on sunglasses. By the time I get to Waitrose, five minutes away, it's overcast. I come out and it's almost sunny, two minutes from home rain is starting to spit and I'm really glad I wore trainers and not sandals because it's bloody cold. It is a shit shite bollocks of a summer.

I saw my oncology consultant and all was well. I'll have a PT scan or scans nearer the end of the month and should see her at the beginning of July although that might be later and that's when I'll find out what the treatment has done to the cancer. In terms of health walking home from hospital today made me feel good about myself despite the fact that I was quite breathless and had to nap when I got back. I'm stronger than I was. I'm having difficulty swallowing but that's partly a mental thing and I'm going to get some counselling. I also had a meeting after the appointment with one of my dieticians - who was also at the appointment - and she was bloody brilliant at helping me see how much better I'm doing than I'm giving myself credit for and reminding me to go easier on myself. I definitely came away from it all feeling better about stuff. The consultant has prescribed me some steroids which we're hoping will see me rid of the bits of pneumonia that are hanging on like a bastard.

Summer though, when is it ever going to arrive?!

SinnerBoy · 11/06/2024 20:59

There is another stallion, but he sat down, apparently. They need to stand for the full 30 hours of transit time; they will try again later.

He knew that! He just liked it in Prague and had no sense of adventure.

MouseMinge · 12/06/2024 02:43

I saw two photos of different horses sitting down today. If it had been just one I'd have assumed photoshopped but both horses were in the same position, that is sitting almost as though they were human. This boggled my brain. I had no idea a horse could sit.

duc748 · 12/06/2024 03:15

Sorry, that just sounds so Gary Larsen! 😃

Kucinghitam · 12/06/2024 08:24

@MouseMinge Sounds like you are doing brilliantly on the health front! I am so glad to hear that Flowers

DDs have been packing for their DofE expedition tomorrow and complaining about needing thermal underwear and waterproof trousers. It's going to be pretty miserable on top of the moors.

OTOH, when it's cold and wet, as long as you have indoor shelter, you can just put on extra clothing and blankets. When it's 50°C like in New Delhi, there is absolutely nothing you can do except suffer.

Random thought of the morning. Why are people not combobulated, traught, shevelled, fenestrated, couth? If we have constructed something, why isn't it mantled?

OP posts:
NoBinturongsHereMate · 12/06/2024 09:25

Sheveled and couth used to be used at lrast until the Tudors. Mantelled was.for putting on an outer garment but maybe not for construction.

It would be quite tricky to.fenestrate someone though - I feel the key point is through-a-window rather than whether.you are entering or exiting the building. And traditionally there's a height difference to.overcome.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 12/06/2024 09:34

I wonder about the word ruth. Ever heard of anyone being described as ruth?

Susie Dent did a piece on those, a couple of years ago and as already pointed out, they were used in the past, but fell out of fashion. Apparently, there's an airport in America, which has a Recombobulation Room!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 12/06/2024 10:15

All airports should have one of those. And more shevelling facilities.

SinnerBoy · 12/06/2024 11:12

But I'm a natural born scruff and don't want to be shevelled!

The opposite of ruthless is ruthful, though I don't think I've ever heard anyone say it. Ruth = remorse/compassion, I think.

Four years ago a donkey named Diesel went missing in Wyoming. He's now part of an elk community.

Diesel is living his best life!

Britinme · 12/06/2024 18:38

Aww that is so lovely!

Gonners · 12/06/2024 21:28

I just love that the elks - not the most species-tolerant of animals - seem to have accepted him (or possibly her). Ladies, it can only be a matter of time until we are EDUCATED by the elks!

SinnerBoy · 12/06/2024 22:16

Diesel is just great!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 13/06/2024 09:29

They're female elks. Diesel blends in pretty well, though you have to wonder what the elks think.

duc748 · 13/06/2024 10:42

Speaking of wildlife, some pinniped pest control seems badly needed on MN in the last couple of days. Seems to have spread to further threads today. They know what they're doing. They're not 'debating'. They are just spreading their shit around. Unfortunately, it seems little can be done.
