Thread 13 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 12).

Looks like spring has sprung! Tulips, apple blossom and early hay fever are upon us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm, because "something something 'til May is out". The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I'm sorry for those having properly shit weather. It's grey with a few touches of blue today but yesterday was all blue and sunny and so gorgeously warm that my heart sang. I can't really get out and about yet due to being a weakling so good weather means I can be out on my sizeable terrace which is a huge pleasure. Yesterday was a good day!

duc748 · 26/05/2024 11:55

It's no tragedy to any of those Tories to no longer be an MP. Like Gove, they can all concentrate on adding to their fine collection of English bank-notes easily enough outside parliament.
Thanks, Brit. Yeah I've heard of Susan Collins, didn't know she was from round your way.

Obviously, have Terrace Envy, though! 😃

Britinme · 26/05/2024 13:36

We are on Prince Edward Island today and tomorrow and we are having a mini-meetup with a poster some of you may remember from the Old Place - antimatter. I will pass on good wishes from (Istr) duc. We are visiting Green Gables, which is of course obligatory for tourists here.

artant · 26/05/2024 13:44

It was mostly sunny here yesterday (I pegged a wash out at about 4pm and got it dry) and is sunny today so far. Chucked it down in the night though.

I really need to get out and do some gardening but so far I’m having a very lazy day.

And from me, as well please!

DeanElderberry · 26/05/2024 14:40

best wishes to antimatter - hope you have a great day

artant · 26/05/2024 14:44

Best wishes to antimatter from me too although I don’t think our paths crossed often.

Looks like my laziness means I’ve missed my chance to do anything in the garden today. It’s chucking it down again now. Oh well.

Does she live in Avondale? Hi from me, too!

Today turned out okay in the end. Not lots of sun and blue skies but a bit of both and enough warmth to have the terrace door open. My friend B came over and got me some shopping. She's a good gardener and was impressed with my honeysuckle and balcony roses - or whatever they're called - which aren't flowering but are green and oh so healthy. I'm hoping the honeysuckle will flower this summer. I got the plant last year and it was about a foot or so high. It's now closer to four feet and I have it wrapped around the terrace fence type things. The roses were from a friend's mother's funeral. They were flowering when I took a pot home and I got a second flowering from them last summer. Very pretty flowers. I also have a jasmine that is growing very slowly but still growing. I bought that and the honeysuckle for evening scents on the terrace. Fingers crossed it happens.

Anyway, I had enough strength to fill up an outside watering can, take it outside and about half an hour ago I watered my plants. I'm still very feeble, but I'm managing to do a little bit more every day and being sensible enough to not to push myself too hard because I'll just mess it all up if I do. I'm definitely feeling more positive. I bumped into one of my Worthing chemo nurses when I was waiting to be discharged on Tuesday and she remembered me and arranged an appointment for me next week to have my PIC line dressing redone because no fucker has been able or willing to do it for nearly a couple of months now. Following that I see my oncology consultant on June 11th when I should get some news about how the treatment has gone. One of the few positive things about being in hospital with non-cancer stuff wrong with me is that I had nearly a month of just not thinking about cancer and what the outcome of my treatment will be and it was so good for my mental health. I'm trying to keep my mind away from it now that I'm out as well. Thinking about it/fretting about it is a waste of time, energy and well-being because there's not a damn thing I can do about it. It will be what it will be and I'll deal with it then. I'm going reasonably well at not thinking about it this week. I've allowed myself to go down the Strictly Come Dancing rabbit hole of how much of a nightmare is Giovanni Pernice or is it all made up (don't think so). It's a relatively harmless rabbit hole and definitely isn't cancer or the fucking general election. That said National Service was an amusing bollocks from the Tories on Friday so I'm looking forward to more mentalism like that for the shits and giggles.

Antimatter turned out to be a lovely person - we enjoyed her company immensely and she evidently enjoyed ours because she wants her husband to meet us too so we are meeting again tomorrow evening for dinner. We duly went to Green Gables and also to a very pretty little seaside town called Victoria, and in between had lunch at a pub, and finally back to our hotel for a cup of tea.

MouseMinge · 26/05/2024 23:27

That sounds lovely, @Britinme . I'm glad you had such a good time. I'm sure I must have known antimatter back in the day but it's all been such a long time for me now that I can never be sure when it's people I didn't engage with regularly.

Britinme · 27/05/2024 00:03

@MouseMinge I can't remember what your old username was but if you don't mind sharing it here or by dm I'll convey it to her when I see her tomorrow. @NoBinturongsHereMate I think your old username was just the animal part wasn't it?

SinnerBoy · 27/05/2024 05:50

I'm glad to hear that you're active in your garden, Mouseminge As you say, go slow and take it easy.

Britinme - is Green Gables a real place, or a theme park kind of affair? Me and my girl have just got into Series 3.

Kucinghitam · 27/05/2024 09:21

I'm glad you had a lovely garden day @MouseMinge! How I long to be back down south, not that it's going to ever happen...

I'm also wondering whether Green Gables is an actual place @Britinme and I could just Google I suppose Grin I'm not sure whether I interacted much with Antimatter in the Old Place, although I definitely recall the username.

I'm going offshore today and the girl has tonsillitis, she's not great. Painkillers and a throat spray seem to be helping. She's due a sleepover on Wednesday and my wife told her she'll be fine to go.

I disagree strongly and told her the other girl's parents will not be impressed if she does.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/05/2024 11:31

SinnerBoy, tonsillitis isn't like a cold, surely your daughter will still be feeling unwell on Wednesday?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/05/2024 11:32

I remember Antimatter and we talked a few times. Very nice poster. Please say hello from me, Tricyrtis, as was.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/05/2024 11:39

Been to visit my Elders. It was a bit of a busman's holiday as I spent part of it working in their garden, weeding and putting in some new plants that they can see from the house.

My dear old dad will be 89 next month and everyone is amazed he's still alive as there's been one crisis after another over the last 15 years ago and he wasn't expected to make it during any of them. On this visit he looked positively shiny though he did fall asleep rather a lot. I discovered he likes having his head scratched, like you'd do with a cat or dog. I wanted to touch his snow white hair and when I gently scratched his head he said 'You can come again'. Bless.

Britinme · 27/05/2024 12:04

Green Gables is a reconstructed house furnished as it was during the period of the novel, with a visitor centre about the books and the author. There is a L M Montgomery birthplace museum nearby too. It is nothing like a theme park.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/05/2024 12:14

Nice looking house. I have one memory of the story when it was on as a series when I was a child. I remember a girl leaning out of a top window and calling out 'Anne of Green Gables!' and that's it. Must look the story up and have a read.

Are those peonies to the left of the tree?

duc748 · 27/05/2024 12:31

It's just reminding me of Green Acres, and Arnold the pig! 😃

It was just the furry whiskery bit, yes.

MouseMinge · 27/05/2024 18:05

@Britinme I thought I'd posted my old name(s) to you. I know I typed it, maybe I just didn't send it because I'm a famous halfwit! Anyway, my last username on GU was MedeaX and prior to that and before being banned for something utterly silly I was Ms Monkey for the longest time. Prior to that I was an idiot and used my own first name. The innocence of the early days of the internet!

Britinme · 27/05/2024 20:31

Thanks Mouse - I'll try her on those. I also have good wishes to send from Gardenista, who we know well though we don't see her often because she lives in Hawaii.

MouseMinge · 28/05/2024 00:54

I was very fond of gardenista and her name made me happy!
