New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Somebody on a thread tried to argue gammon was racist because it’s a skin colour.

Because I am not superstitious (or stupid) I have never ever believed in magic words. Much as dear Oscar made a point that a book is neither moral nor immoral, a word is just a word.

One of the undercover tactics of extremism is to try and police words - because that's a way to police thought.

For all the marmite he gets here, the Stewart Lee episode on "context" is a Nobel literature piece of performance that demonstrates words need context to exist.

Government lost the second motion on the Rwanda Bill

Piggywaspushed · 16/04/2024 18:15

Birbalsingh won her case on banning Muslim prayer today.

Suella was a founding governor there.

She was just in the News saying we are British.

Is Suella actually saying out loud that Muslim people aren't British??

SerendipityJane · 16/04/2024 18:17

Fuck me. Badenoch actually makes a good point on the smoking bill. Presumably you can rent principles by the hour ?

Government lost the second motion on the Rwanda Bill

Third gov't defeat in the Lords, 253 to 236. This one is key - that courts should decide whether Rwanda is, in fact, safe.

Given there are 269 Tory peers, couldn't they just whip them all to vote for the government, and then win the day?

Or is Sunak so bad at politics he can't even do that?

Saucery · 16/04/2024 18:20

Quite astonished at Braverman saying that about ‘British schools’. Are all the faith schools full of children who aren’t British, then? Or is she just an idiot.

I might be misremembering this but didn’t the government piss off the Tory peers on the last vote and they were warned they’d have trouble getting them all out to vote again.

What's the worst you can do to a recalcitrant peer ? Make them foreign secretary ?

"Given there are 269 Tory peers, couldn't they just whip them all to vote for the government, and then win the day?

I think it suits the Government just fine to have the legislation held up by the big, bad Lords.

They don't have the practicalities in place anyway - this way they get more mileage out of complaining about unelected chambers etc, deep state getting in their way etc.

Notonthestairs · 16/04/2024 18:56

It's pretty clear which MPs have connections to tobacco companies.

Can we expect the Tory manifesto to include abolishing the Lords then?

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 19:42

Braverman was back to vote No in the smoking ban vote, it passed by 383 to 67

Notonthestairs · 16/04/2024 19:51

"Can we expect the Tory manifesto to include abolishing the Lords then?"

Ah, no. What else would they put in the Tory treasurer/donors gift bags?

Pretty sure Braverman would have swum back if she'd had to - never willing known to miss a chance to stick the boot into Sunak.

So she disagress with Cates about saving children, interesting, you'd think that the small family of NatCs would be able to agree on something.

Maybe stuffing the Lords with people who are only interested in the title, wasn't such a good idea after all?

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 20:08

176 Tories votes yes, 57 voted no, 106 recorded no vote

Not quite the vicotry for Sunak's top priority

Notonthestairs · 16/04/2024 20:15

It normally works very well.

So either this just a particularly wild bunch of rebellious Deep State peers.

Or maybe the legislation is so rotten that even Tory peers can't bring themselves to nod it through.

Either way the Government don't have the planes to transfer anyone anywhere - so it's quite a convenient delay.

Shame for Rwanda though - few more days before they get their next £50 million.

Striking that all those on the right of the party with leadership ambitions voted against Sunak - Badenoch, Braverman, Jenrick & Truss.

They just can't wait to get rid of him.

She does seem to be totally unaware that she’s a laughing stock.

Just totally unaware.

I listened to something on R4 earlier and she said something about it the problem with unelected people having a say ......:

Errrmmmmmmm 🧐

medianewbie · 16/04/2024 21:01

@Notonthestairs I was just saying the same to Ds!
