GB News, "What do you make of the Mayor of Brussels shutting down #NatConBrussels2 where Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman were speaking at?"

Jonathan Ashworth, "I'm a champion of free speech.. But I am surprised that Suella Braverman is a speaker there because some of the speakers have unsavoury views and I'm surprised Rishi Sunak has let her speak there" @JonAshworth

GB News, "Why on earth because there is one unsavoury character should someone not be free to go and speak"

Jonathan Ashworth does a quick google, "One speaker is under investigation for right wing extremism. Another speaker argued that Christchurch mosque shooter had legitimate concerns. Another speaker argued gay marriage is a destructive experiment. There's a parade of extremist characters associated with this conference. So I'm surprised Rishi Sunak hasn't blocked Braverman from speaking at it"

GB News presenters don't know what to say so change the subject

A not so subtle sharpening of the knife before Sunak as a sign to the party

Lizzie Dearden article from last years Nat C's conference.

Faith, family, flag.

Is that the same Cates who is the darling of the knowing what a woman is brigade, who last year was concerned that woman were getting too much education and so not making enough babies?

AdamRyan · 16/04/2024 16:22

https://nationalconservatism.org/natcon-brussels-2/schedule/

Cates' session is called "Save the children!"

Excuse me while I go find my eyes, they rolled themselves out of my head

Schedule - National Conservatism Conference, Brussels 2024

I take it is going to be an attack on Rishi Sunak who didn't want children to be fed during the pandemic?

That’s the one.

Actually reading that agenda has made me feel a bit sick

It's a bit more nuanced than that.

Like Mrs Thatcher the idea is that working class women have the babies needed to fuel the economy whilst the family Cates waft about in a perennial life of leisure as befits their status. We talk about universal suffrage, but it has a cousin - universal emancipation.. Neither of which really fits the right wing playbook.

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 16:51

Tory MP Miriam Cates was smuggled into NatCon wearing a headscarf via a service entry

Wasn't that series one of "Homeland" ?

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 16:55

At least we know why the Nat Cs didn't vote last night, party time in Brussels

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 17:22

Meanwhile in London

https://x.com/BestForBritain/status/1780265661987516763

The gov't just lost the vote on the first motion on the Safety of Rwanda bill in the Lords by 25 votes - to quite a bit of hubbub and surprise.

It seems reports of peers folding were premature. ~AA

DuncinToffee · 16/04/2024 17:23

And in the Commons

https://x.com/AdamBienkov/status/1780261829324816435

Conservative MP Adam Afriyie, who accepted £19,000 worth of all-expenses paid trips to speak at Tobacco industry conferences in the past two years, says that smoking bans "don't work" and are "ridiculous".

Notonthestairs · 16/04/2024 17:30

Smoking bans don't work?

Really? When my grandparents took me to the cinema my grandad was able to smoke his pipe! My parents sat us in the smoking section of the plane. Overflowing ashtrays in pubs!
My teenage kids think that is absolute madness
(Ex smoker, ex vaper - still love both, very glad I've given up).

Presumably Cates will be back to vote on smoking in order to save children?

By the way I thought that Nigel Farage was meant to be keen on speaking ones mind. Why on the radio just now is he so upset that the Mayor in Brussels has spoken his mind and called the Far Right, the Far right?

AdamRyan · 16/04/2024 17:35

You can not call far right people far right. They don't like it.

Is that what people mean when they call people snowflakes?

Its all so confusing.

😂
No. Snowflakes are people who object to being called communists. They are trying to shut down free speech.

I learnt the other day that the term "gammon" was just as sexist and offensive as "karen". I was Confused

grannycake · 16/04/2024 17:57

Just saw this on Twitter it's a letter from an ex Tory MP published in the Time

grannycake · 16/04/2024 17:58

Ok. That didn't work. I'll try and save it as a pic

Doesn’t it just.
as for Truss I have no words, currently looking for my eyeballs they have rolled so far back into my head, least I will find them eventually unlike Truss who’s two functioning brain cells have gone awol.

grannycake · 16/04/2024 18:00

Hope this works

Cates is the gift that keeps on giving to a sociology teacher.

5 years ago, teaching the New Right was hard because they seemed stuck in the late 80s. Now we have lots of shiny contemporary speeches to use.

Every cloud.

Somebody on a thread tried to argue gammon was racist because it’s a skin colour.

But I am surprised that Suella Braverman is a speaker there because some of the speakers have unsavoury views

Like Suella Braverman.
