New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

The comments seem interesting on the Mail. They were critical of Boris and they don't care about Angela Rayner, and they don't much care for that bloke in the Spectator who talks about his use of prostitutes. People are more complicated than the DM might pretend. It is often viewed but I am not convinced it's considered to be "informing". A generation ago I agree with @pointythings that it was. And it was homophobic and misogynistic and nasty. It really did reflect a view. These days it's mostly got its tongue hanging out for celebrity women with the odd prurient article for old times sake. It is nowhere near as horrible as it once was.

Even with that @SerendipityJane I think it is much diminished. Sometimes I have a degree of frustration on here because I can't always be frank as to why but obviously the DM like the Telegraph has always been the mouthpiece of a certain Tory spin doctor. The point is that the judiciary survived that particular hysteria

I must say I find the sneery judgemental contents on here quite telling. So a person reads the daily mail so what. It doesn’t mean they lack reasoning. It doesn’t mean they don’t ‘do crosswords’. Perhaps they read it watch news in tv, talk to others - perhaps they don’t - and make decisions that differ from yours. That’s life.

I grew up in house where my parents had The guardian delivered each day (no Sunday edition). So I grew up reading that paper. I remember reading Julie Burchill columns. Which I enjoyed. Long before they sacked her for understanding that biological sex exists. And that bloke with a big nose (there was a big black and white photo of him each week), didn’t like his journalism then. Now I’m older I understand why. He was sneery personified.

My parents still get The Guardian delivered 6 days a week. It informs them, as well as the BBC news / reviews and Newsnight. So that in its own way is quite biased. Though my parents would not judge readership of another paper. They wouldn’t dream of voting for anyone else but Labour. Even today.

I fully expect to be castigated (or maybe ignored, sit in your hands and don’t respond to the outlier on this thread, for goodness sake!). Still just a reminder, try not to be so fcking snobbish about others reading habits.

They sacked her for being offensive

Then she got sacked by the telegraph for being offensive

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/julie-burchill-telegraph-lilibet-tweet-b1861989.html

The problem could be how she expresses her views, rather than the views themselves?

Minister calls for sacking of Observer columnist Burchill - and paper's editor

Article attacking transgender people sparks anger as readers flock to complain

Oh no bomb! What if reading the DM is like shopping at M&S and something that comes to us all once we get into their target age bracket?!! Shock

SerendipityJane · 21/04/2024 12:39

Being an expatriate Londoner, I can remember Burchill writing for Time Out. As did Will Self.

And most honestly, John McVicar.

bombastix · 21/04/2024 12:43

@AdamRyan - I have hopes by the time I reach 70 it will have turned into the Euro 1970s soft porno celeb mag it so desperately wants to be. Minus the Royal Family coverage which is amazing in its tediousness

Ha! Grin

FWIW I don't think that is what Rothermere wants from his investment. Or what any media owner wants.

Nobody owns print media or the online platforms to make money.
It's a means to direct/misdirect voters focus and keep policies where they like them.
And in an age where our attention spans are shortening (and we are all time poor) it's all about the headline, not the content.

I think you’re safe. An irresistible urge to buy the DM has yet to strike me in my 71st year.

Alexandra2001 · 21/04/2024 13:18

@Lion400 To even pick up the DM, let alone buy it, denotes a certain sneeriness towards other people, usually less fortunate than themselves.... their journalism stinks.... a generalisation perhaps but it doesn't make it any less accurate.

How many regular DM readers do you think are against Rwanda, pro EU and vote Labour? its going to be a small minority.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/04/2024 13:26

Snnering at newspaper readerships is all the rage since Braverman blamed "Tofu eating, Guardian reading wokerati" for the government's inability to govern.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/04/2024 13:30

And there's the "pathetic, London Elite" who get their news from the erm Daily Star according to Liz Truss.😂😂😂

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 13:36

Let us not forget when the Daily Mail , not scared to be forthright, printed the faces of Stephen Lawrence's killers. Their one fine moment.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 13:38

I don't think I once sneered at DM readers.

The susceptibility of newspaper readers is embedded in all journalistic theory and is not particularly controversial : see the hypodermic syringe model.

Perhaps lion you would like to do your own survey on whether DM readers buy it to engage in the Crossword.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 13:40

And that bloke with a big nose

I mean if we were going to find the sneerer on this thread...

Honestly I want a t shirt with that on

Evenstar · 21/04/2024 14:07

Actually that one has a misprint, many others available!

BestIsWest · 21/04/2024 14:14

I have to buy the DM for my mum every Saturday. I cringe every time. She has Alzheimer’s and it’s the only Television guide she can cope with. In her defence she’s got used to it because DF always bought it on a Saturday. He was a lifelong Labour member, councillor and Trade Unionist, knocked doorsteps every election, campaigned against Brexit etc.
Every time I questioned why he was buying it he’d say he liked to know what the enemy were thinking. Plus they did vouchers towards M&S coupons.

BIossomtoes · 21/04/2024 14:17

My dad read it. I made him laugh by presenting it to him using the tongs. Goodness, I do miss him.

TheABC · 21/04/2024 14:27

All media are biased and I'm well aware that my prejudices will play into what I choose to read. However, I can choose to read widely and cross check my sources. That Internet has made that a lot easier (with the exception of the reflexive meme jerk I see on Twitter.)

The problem is getting people to recognise the need for critical thinking and fact checking as it does take time and it does not lead to a dopamine rush.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 13:40

Not at all. A factual observation from a child’s mind (I would’ve been <18yrs old).

I scan through it when I go to my parents these days (I’m quite a lot older..) but usually I just do the (quick) crossword badly crossing stuff out in pen. Which my dad gets exasperated by, but it’s kind of expected now.

I also of course shake my head at its bias. As I would any paper.

Cheguevarahamster · 21/04/2024 14:36

My dad gets the mail for the racing. I hate the paper with a passion.

Hearing rumours on twitter that Menzies is stepping down as an MP. Unclear whether it is immediate or at GE.

Me too. 20yrs there, still miss it. Time magazine was office trash. No one actually read it as far as I can remember. Image wise the front page was usually mildly attention grabbing.
