New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Mel Stride surely wouldn’t mislead voters, would he?

If you can pass a law making Rwanda safe, you can pass a law saying illness doesn't exist.

In a speech to be given in London, Sunak promises a “new welfare settlement” to tackle “unsustainable” rises in benefit spending and the record 2.8 million people off work with long-term sickness.

WTAF. Shock

Is he saying GPs aren't the experts in whether people are actually sick?

What I notice is that the economy is now looking really really shagged in terms of housing. Literally I do not think a lot of people can afford their mortgages. Where I live, the amount of high spec, suspiciously cheap property is striking. People are trying to sell up and fast.

A bit of anecdata but looks like in this bit of London at least people are very overstretched

Same here. People are trying to downsize and the bigger houses are hanging around for ages. I'm SW

Dr Sunak. His mum must be so pleased.

From SKy News

  • Second, he announces the government will "test" shifting the "fit note" system to "specialist work and health professionals" rather than GPs;

Tory donors, friends and family he means

Who else heard champagne corks popping at Capita and ATOS ?

DuncinToffee · 19/04/2024 10:27

I wonder who will get the contract to build the workhouses

InMySpareTime · 19/04/2024 10:30

That sort of govt sentiment is why I don't apply for ESA (even though it's contribution based). I can only work about an hour a month, but I can't risk being forced into more work and making myself even more housebound than I already am.

IClaudine · 19/04/2024 10:33

But this is almost what happens now for benefits. GPs only issue fit notes for the initial part of the claim, then people are assessed by HCPs.

Notonthestairs · 19/04/2024 10:45

What a perfect double whammy -
Blame the sick AND lazy GPs

(ok it might not be GPs assessing the long term sick & our health service may be held together with duct tape but let's not let facts get in the way)

Yes it will be interesting to see who the preferred provider(s) are of these new and improved assessment services.

DuncinToffee · 19/04/2024 10:46

Scope are calling the speech a “full scale assault” on disabled people.

Also Fujitsu need a few billion to make up for what they will have to eventually pay to the Post Office

Or Serco.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/04/2024 11:23

Oh God, ATOS were the scum of the earth.

WHO: Covid is a mass disabling event
UK govt & media: Covid is like flu.

UK govt: WTF we’ve got a massive increase in people on long term sick.

Piggywaspushed · 19/04/2024 11:32

I know I have said it before but this government are the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving for a sociology teacher.

Today's health and disability lesson planned.

bombastix · 19/04/2024 12:17

It's such a carbon copy of the late 90s. Then we also had the lazy and sick who were holding the country back.

It is not rocket science. Improve healthcare, make sure employers cannot exploit their workforce and conditions for wider employment will be met. If you treat them like cattle they will find ways not to work or they will be too ill ti do it.

DuncinToffee · 19/04/2024 13:02

It will come as no suprise to anyone, Boris Johnson has broken Acoba rules for a third time

Boris Johnson broke official rules by refusing to declare his links with a hedge fund that organised his visit to meet with the Venezuelan president, the UK's anti-corruption watchdog finds.

No consequences ofcourse

Posted this on the current thread about fit notes, but thought would post here too...

Sunak is also going after PIP claimants, many of whom work.

On the review of Pip, Sunak said it may be right to pay one-off costs for adaptations, but that the payments may not need to be ongoing

This is a recycled idea from Osborne who cane up with this exact policy and then abandoned it. Even Johnson and IDS thought it a step too far.

George Osborne made ‘mistake’ over disability cuts, says Boris Johnson

London mayor praised the decision to shelve disability reforms but rejects claims the Conservatives have ‘lost touch’

I know they are just flailing about and won't be able to implement these policies, but it still makes me feel slightly anxious!

Me too, I’m still waiting on response from my PiP renewal form which they hassled me to send back by the beginning of January, got a text on good Friday saying not to call & still being assessed, I feel sick every time I think about it.

IClaudine · 19/04/2024 14:45

That is awful @dontcallmelen . I hope you have good news soon xx

DuncinToffee · 19/04/2024 15:17

It's the smirking when he demonises vulnerable people that gets me Angry Tory cruelty personified
