New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

He knows what a woman is, 2 in this case

IClaudine · 17/04/2024 22:48

Made me giggle that the Times have turned comments off for that article. No wonder!

Yeah, they 're the ones you guilt trip in to giving you thousands of pounds because you've been caught with your boxers down.

I'm now wondering how many MPs assistants are having to run around in the middle of the night paying off "bad people".

The question is whether they are paying off bad people for badder people who use the bad people for bad things...

IClaudine · 17/04/2024 22:54

Why has The Times chosen to drop this story now, I wonder?

Unless you have a micro-P, then you can just give out colleagues personal details over the old blower. Saves any women or men being hurt in the process. Even the bad people have wised up to this since Mr Not All Menz it seems.

Is there some kind of law about how political funds should be used?

Who do I write to to ask them to investigate?

bombastix · 17/04/2024 23:01

Well. This is what you get, Richard Holden.

I think it depends on whether the money was donated for the candidates use or the party (and maybe whether it's come from central funding).

bombastix · 17/04/2024 23:15

You know what, I think it's deserved. The list of sexually incontinent MPs is a long one. Also obvious money grabbers too. The Tory Party have thrown too many stones.

I don't think it's difficult to work out what the implicit problem is here and it looks a lot worse in terms of criminal intent.

DuncinToffee · 17/04/2024 23:21

They have known about it for 3 months but now it makes the papers

NEW: Conservative Chief Whip Simon Hart announces that Mark Menzies has lost the Tory whip:

“Following a call with the Chief Whip, Mark Menzies has agreed to relinquish the Conservative whip, pending the outcome of an investigation.”

bombastix · 17/04/2024 23:29

Personal medical expenses. That's a new one for an old problem

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2024 23:35

"They have known about it for 3 months but now it makes the papers"

Yes, he's lost the whip for making the front pages, rather than defrauding donors .

bombastix · 17/04/2024 23:43

I think the Times broke William Wragg too? They have been defending Rayner today too (Matthew Parris). Someone does not like what has been done and recognises who is going to be the next government

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2024 23:43

Of course he had to lose the whip tonight to provide a bit of cover for the morning media rounds - they'll claim they can't possibly discuss the story because of the-so-recent-it's-only-hours-old "ongoing investigation".

Or they'll pretend they haven't read the papers (which will be a particularly transparent lie because I'm sure every Westminster MP is picking over this story)

bombastix · 17/04/2024 23:49

Yes but it's gift. Nice journalistic contrast with Rayner's treatment tomorrow morning. Handy hypocrisy narrative.

The "He has offered a courageous and fulsome apology " excuse again?

DuncinToffee · 18/04/2024 00:02

It is going to be damaging, the knowing about it for the last 3 months and not doing anything.

Their first duty is to the court.

And anyway, it's a profession which relies on facts and records.

Also, generally, a criminal conviction requires intent as well as action. It why we have courts.

And English Common Law (which amusingly some foreigners have taken to mean the law for common people as opposed to our rulers) does rest on a presumption of innocence.

And, rather famously, Starmer was a prosecutor…

Saucery · 18/04/2024 06:21

They have sailed way beyond caricature now.

newnamethanks · 18/04/2024 06:33

Whoops! Getting slippery on those Tory slopes but ANGELA RAYNER, louder please, ANGE!

Surely the whip was suspended at the start of the investigation and he was asked not to come into parliament as would be the case with any other profession where there was a serious allegation of misconduct?

Or is being a Tory MP not a profession.

Fylde is one of the few remaining constituencies where the Tories were still in with a chance.

Perhaps it is all part of Sunak's plan to destroy the party?
