New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Aren't they timed out to rely upon the Parliament Act? I think they need a year between sessions.
(Might have misunderstood that!)

No idea!

How the fuck are we going to request the help of interpreters and other more local specialists in the future after the truly shitty way we've behaved towards those that have previously worked with us(and I include the crap way we bailed out of Afghanistan)?

This is so short sighted and will only serve to lower the UKs standing in the world.

Excellent point.

Agree as well it's a scandal if they pass it but it's more of a scandal they are trying to send them to Rwanda.

Actually - it's a scandal they need to get here to seek asylum on a small dangerous boat in the first place.

We should be offering these people sanctuary and welcoming them with open arms after they helped protect the lives of our British people at the risk of their own.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2024 19:55

It's taken me a while to find this very short but interesting thread re Parliament Act & Salisbury Convention from Dr Alice Lily -

  1. In the case of the Rwanda bill, where we are now and when this parliament must end means government CANNOT meet the timing requirements that it would need to legally meet in order to use the Parliament Act. So it CANNOT use the Parliament Act. End of debate. It simply can’t.

It may well be that the Lords does not feel bound by the Salisbury Convention when considering the Rwanda bill as it wasn’t a manifesto commitment. But that is a completely separate question to whether the govt can use the Parliament Act- which, see above

This may contain the answer, although I felt sure there was also something about manifestos involved.

It does appear as though a year is important, which of course Sunak doesn't have.

bombastix · 17/04/2024 20:03

I have learned something. I did not know of the year limit. Well then they will just ping pong the bill to death it seems. Oh dear

DuncinToffee · 17/04/2024 20:09

I think it is expected that the Rwanda Bill will get apporved at some point but that flights will not take off.

I'll see if I can remember where I read that

DuncinToffee · 17/04/2024 20:12

Beth Rigby

NEW: House of Lords passes amendment that the independent monitoring committee has to declare Rwanda a safe county. With that the bill back to the HoC for the fifth time….bounces Rwanda bill into Monday

That sounds slightly more cheering, although agree an absolute scandal & wickedness that the Afghan people that supported the U.K. could be subjected to such inhumanity, just when you think the government couldn’t sink any lower they do, every bloody single day it’s so utterly abhorrent.

DuncinToffee · 17/04/2024 20:16

247 to 195 for the amendment Exemption for agents, allies and employees of the UK Overseas

I wonder if Sunak had allowed that ammendment the first time it was put back to the Commons he might have taken the steam out of some of the Lords other objections and got his bill past.
He really is a master politican.

SerendipityJane · 17/04/2024 20:39

Weren't some eyebrows raised over Theresa May creating an extra long parliamentary session as it prevented the parliament act or something ?

Love this. No idea who Labour have got doing their social media stuff but they are wiping the floor with whoever is doing it for the Tories.

Um, what now???

Unbelievable story from The Times, Tory MP accused of misusing party funds after being locked in a flat in the early hours

For those who/o Twitter-
The gist is Mark Menzies (Tory MP) apparently rang a local party volunteer at 3am as he was. Locked in a flat (?) and needed £5k as a matter of life & death (?) The local office manager paid £6.5k out of their own money and was repaid from campaign funds.

cakeorwine · 17/04/2024 22:09

So RAF crew who potentially worked with Afghan troops might then have to fly them to Rwanda?

It is so short sighted. I hope someone asks a Minister what they think of that.

I'm sure this story was doing the rounds a while back, but Menzies wasn't named?

But Angela Rayner...

IClaudine · 17/04/2024 22:23

This is the story I was talking thinking of. Apologies for the link to DM.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2024 22:41

I'm now wondering how many MPs assistants are having to run around in the middle of the night paying off "bad people".

BIossomtoes · 17/04/2024 22:42

It makes the Rayner debacle look pretty tame, don’t it?
