How strict at Gatwick - liquids

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

How many can you possibly be taking?

Just do two clear bags worth - and put them in different trays.

RedToothBrush · 13/04/2024 12:56

It's not just where you are flying from. It's also where you return from. I've seen places where they have been extremely strict on return flights and forced people to bin a pile of very expensive cosmetics.

I just wouldn't risk it.

I'm pretty sure solid stuff isn't counted as liquid? I checked last year and swapped eg a liquid moisturiser for a pot of solid Nivea moisturiser and was fine but didn't get told specifically at the security

You’re limited to up to 1,000ml that have to be in containers no larger than 100ml, so about ten items that can fit in the bag. I have a lot of items! Currently the list consists of about 9 items, but that’s not counting the hard pressed cream products I want to take, so may go over the limit.

I think it's total ml isn't it?

tobee · 13/04/2024 12:59

I know this isn't helpful but it's such a pain in the arse isn't it?

Yep! I bloody hate it, especially now they have the technology that means it’s not actually necessary. They’re optimistic the scanners will be up and running by the summer holidays though.

Blimey! I can’t imagine packing so much stuff!

Winter42 · 13/04/2024 13:05

I wouldn't risk anything expensive. I had a 100ml bottle of perfume.in my hand luggage taken off me at Luton recently. Put through a scanner and told it had to be confiscated.

NoMoreWork · 13/04/2024 13:05

Why do you need to take so many? It seems rather excessive to need this many toiletries/ cosmetics for a couple of weeks away?

Are you travelling with someone else? They can take some as part of their allowed amount?

The other option is to buy some at the airport, just very small amounts in travel size, and use them up while you are away. Thing bought inside security obviously are not included within the limits.

TimeandMotion · 13/04/2024 13:07

Are you flying hand luggage only?

Otherwise the answer is to put them in your checked bag.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2024 13:08

Are you only taking hand luggage then?
You can have any amount you want in the hold.

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 13:11

I want to take so many because I enjoy doing my make up, I have a routine of products that I use.
I’m Doing a lot of editing to get it down to this amount!😅

I’m not wanting to transport any dangerous things, just my personal items.

I do hope the thread doesn’t go too far down the ‘why do you even wear make up?!’ Incredulity.

All the basics like toothpaste, shower gel, deodorant I’ll be purchasing when I arrive.

I was told by security, when I was stopped for accidentally leaving a Bodyshop lip balm in my bag, that anything that is in a pot and you can "spread" I.e cream blush counts as liquid and it will be pulled up. He said that lip sticks and stick type lip balms are fine and classed as solids.

To be honest, it doesn't make sense to me as you can still spread them!

I would do as PP suggested and take two clear plastic bags, put them in two trays.

My DDs are teens and don't use makeup so I divide my stuff up between the three of us 😂😳.

If you are taking checked baggage, and not going hand luggage only, I would just put liquids in the checked baggage. No restrictions then! The last few times I've been away, we've just done hand luggage.

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 13:12

Yep, hand luggage only.

SaltySeaCat · 13/04/2024 13:13

I need alot of contact lens supplies and eye drops. I’ve realised I can’t just take hand luggage anymore

MissyB1 · 13/04/2024 13:13

Also travelling from Gatwick in just over a week, with just carry on luggage. I’m severely limiting my toiletries and make up (not happy though!) I’m guessing cream blusher, concealer, mascara all count as liquid? I just use tinted Vaseline as lipstick but that will need to be in the clear bag too. Then I will also have my eye cream, face cream, and deodorant. I will need two clear bags.

Planning to buy anything else after security, or in the resort.

Flapearedknave · 13/04/2024 13:14

You can order everything you need to lcik and collect at the boots inside the terminal.

I do this for sunscreen and shampoo etc whenever I go away.

Peridot1 · 13/04/2024 13:15

Anything powder is fine and doesn’t count. So put that separately.

mitogoshi · 13/04/2024 13:16

Two bags in two separate trays each with something else so it's no obviously a second bag. Staff at airport don't watch carefully this end, but can't speak for coming back. That said if not including toiletries you should be able to get a fair amount of make up in one bag.

It's supposed to be 1 clear bag per person so if you have 2 you might get stuff taken off you

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 13:19

I really don’t understand the logic of lipstick being a solid but a pot of cream blush, which is the same consistency being a liquid. It’s the random nonsense of it all that gives me the rage!

Yes, reading the guidelines says it’s a limit of 1 clear plastic bag. Most of the products individually are small, so way under the 1,000ml but quite bulky so fitting them in to the bag because a bind.

Already planning to split the powder and liquid products.

drawnfrommemory · 13/04/2024 13:20

Take your own plastic bag as well - the one I got going through security at Gatwick last week was much smaller than I remember!

Etherealcelestialbeing · 13/04/2024 13:20

I agree OP. Such a pain. Are you travelling alone? Can you split your products with someone else?

Janetime · 13/04/2024 13:21

Strict. Are you travelling alone. If not then ger a travel companion to put a bag through.
