How strict at Gatwick - liquids

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 12:54

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

Is any of the makeup you are taking available in a travel size?

Also what is your makeup routine? I love wearing it too and doing a full face but have always managed to fit it into the clear bag.

marmiteoneverything · 13/04/2024 13:46

I really wouldn’t risk taking more than you’re supposed to. Even if Gatwick lets you have two plastic bags (which they’re not meant to), you can’t guarantee that the airport you fly back from will do the same.

If it’s that important to you can’t you just pay for hold luggage? It would be more cost effective than having a bag of nice make up/perfume thrown away, and you wouldn’t have to buy the other stuff when you got there.

Thank you everyone for the advice, it’s good to know there’s no limit on number of items, just total volume. Time to start playing make up jenga to optimise the 20x20 space!

Where did you get the idea there was a limit on number of items? Nothing on the airport website that I can see that would suggest that. It’s really clearly drafted.

It’s the only thing you can go on, to be honest. There might be the odd person supervising who misses something or turns a blind eye, and gives an anecdote for someone to relay to you here, but the fact is that they can enforce the rules as set out in the website and you will not be able to argue. Any other views or suggestions are just noise.

I decant my faves into small travel pots that have a screw top lid. I buy everything else there and am prepared to leave behind anything that is too bulky or won't fit in the 1 litre bag on the way home.

The travel pots are a pound or so in Primark. Great little things, and I use the end of a spoon to get the stuff into the pots. I can understand the need to bring the most loved items, so it can be done without bringing all of it.

whatkatydid2014 · 13/04/2024 13:56

How much is a hold bag? Isn’t it worth just paying for one so you can take whatever you want with you

That’s not something OP can do with her cream blushers and other expensive makeup though.

TimeandMotion · 13/04/2024 13:58

OP read the section on makeup and toiletries on the website. Lipstick does not need to go in the bag.

Why not re the make up? And the cream blusher might not be in a mahoosive container either!

Quartz2208 · 13/04/2024 14:01

Gatwick have already said they won’t make the summer it will be next year so definitely get it sorted

They come in little palettes don’t they? You rub your finger or brush in to apply them, they are not liquid enough to squeeze or pour in or out of a bottle. And if you scoop a bit out it makes a right mess and you lose loads, and you can’t put back in original container after the holiday. The stuff is expensive.

OK, I just use basic stuff that can be squeezed out of a tube or pumped out, and powder blush/setting stuff.

Sorry, I completely fabricated it! I was basing it on no more than 100ml sized containers, up to 1,000ml max and so thought it was no more than 10 items, which is wrong.

Most of my larger liquid items are 30ml, so as long as the total is under 1,000 then it’s good. Just a bit bulky.

My holiday make up routine consists of a moisturiser, primer, base liquid shimmer, foundation, concealer, cream contour, 3 cream blushers, bronzer, liquid highlighter if I can get it in the bag too. Eyebrow gel, liquid lipstick, lipgloss, setting spray.

I wouldn't risk anything expensive. I had a 100ml bottle of perfume.in my hand luggage taken off me at Luton recently. Put through a scanner and told it had to be confiscated.

Why??

There used to be a limit of ten items.

Massive kudos if you can get all that in an airport plastic bag! Even decanted, that's a lot of pots.

I'm wondering where I'm going wrong now, as my holiday (and everyday) makeup comprises primer (v occasionally), a bit of powder, eyeliner (pencil) and mascara. So that takes up minimal space in my plastic bag, but I still struggle to close it (travel sized shampoo, conditioner, hair serum, moisturiser, face wash and deodorant have to go in too). I buy sunscreen at the airport.

This is an archived story from November 2007 about the rules coming into force in January 2007, ending the total ban on hand luggage. There's no mention of number of items

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4789593.stm

So that's the official rules. I have heard of individual airports saying the limit was 10 items, for a sort while, presumably having misunderstood.

If you google ‘airport liquids “ten items”’ or similar, you will find dozens of web pages, leaflets, links and forum posts, official airport websites/pages, and reports from travellers worldwide, over a span of at least ten years, referring to the fact that only ten items are/were allowed.

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2024 14:45

I don't think 1000 ml is enforced, just what you can get in a clear bag. One bag per person so my kids and DH took stuff.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 13/04/2024 14:46

Yes you will be stopped and your bag searched if you don't take out lipsticks etc. Mascara is the same.
there is no limit on how many items you can take, you just need to ensure they are all in 100ml bottles or smaller. NB this does not mean a half used 200ml bottle.
they won't be confiscated if you simply forget to put them in the clear bag, it will just hold you up. Gatwick security are very efficient and they have seen it all before, you'd be amazed what people take through in their hand luggage (last week a US National was trying to fly out with a taser and pepper spray. Legal in their state apparently.
golden rule - if in doubt plastic bag it.

If I remember I will check with security tonight on whether there is a cap on the amount so I can give you the definitive answer.

Lipstick does not have to go in the clear plastic bag. It is not the same as mascara, they are in different lists on the Gatwick website.

Oblomov24 · 13/04/2024 14:53

When you think about it, this is all absolutely crazy and a complete con.

When we go on holiday for a two day break or a week break, we want to be able to take what we want to take with us and when you think about it the whole idea of moving all your make up into small little 10 mil containers so that you can travel is absolutely crazy.

Making decisions about not taking suntan cream and shampoo and conditioner with you because you're exceeded the limitations you'll have to buy it once you get there?

Just stop for a second and consider how stupid that is, that we are now forced to do this.

Post 9/11, something that was supposed to be a temporary measure, becomes the norm, 20 years later, still exists.

So wrong.

StiffyByngsDogBartholomew · 13/04/2024 14:55

on the flip side of that @Oblomov24 one could argue that if you only want to pay for handluggage you pay for it by sacrificing the amount of items you can take with you. You can take an entire suitcase full of large sized liquid makeup items in the hold.
this issue has arisen because people want to have their cake and eat it with cheapest possible flights and also take what they want. The security measures are there for a reason and the only reason it is stopping is because the scanner technology has become more sophisticated since the guidance originally came in after 9/11

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2024 14:57

I've had lipsticks treated as liquids before and had to put them into the bag.
