How strict at Gatwick - liquids

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 12:54

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

My holiday make up routine consists of a moisturiser, primer, base liquid shimmer, foundation, concealer, cream contour, 3 cream blushers, bronzer, liquid highlighter if I can get it in the bag too. Eyebrow gel, liquid lipstick, lipgloss, setting spray.

That is ridiculous! A bit of tinted moisturiser and a lip gloss and you will look fine. Enjoy an extra drink with the time you save getting ready. 🍹

I've had lipsticks treated as liquids before and had to put them into the bag.

Jesus wept. This is about Gatwick, next week and the rules are online for all to see. It makes no difference whatsoever what happened to you in the past.

Oblomov24 · 13/04/2024 15:04

@StiffyByngsDogBartholomew

I completely disagree. It's got nothing to do with the cheapness of the flight. Or technology, eg better scanners.

Pre 9/11 you could take liquids as hand luggage on a flight. To be so restricted now, over what was supposed to be a temporary measure. Airport staff prohibiting you from taking a blusher (I don't wear blusher myself Wink) abroad.

Think about it. That's crazy.

"The security measures are there for a reason"

I'm not sure that's true. Plus, The plastic bags have got smaller aswell.

Telling a woman her bag is too full and she needs to take a blusher or lipstick out.

Think about it. What security measure does that fulfill? Now the flight is safer?

When you think about it, this is all absolutely crazy and a complete con.

When we go on holiday for a two day break or a week break, we want to be able to take what we want to take with us and when you think about it the whole idea of moving all your make up into small little 10 mil containers so that you can travel is absolutely crazy.

Making decisions about not taking suntan cream and shampoo and conditioner with you because you're exceeded the limitations you'll have to buy it once you get there?

Just stop for a second and consider how stupid that is, that we are now forced to do this.

Post 9/11, something that was supposed to be a temporary measure, becomes the norm, 20 years later, still exists.

So wrong.

No really. I don't actually know what the problem is. It's really not hard to pack accordingly with the rules. Crazy and complete con? Do you really think they'd be doing it unless they felt there was a need to and would be spending a fortune on a new system to save time at security and end this rule?

Honestly. Talk about being a drama llama.

Bluepetergarden · 13/04/2024 15:09

Pay for a hold case then you can take as much as you want

The security measures were brought in due to the potential that terrorists could bring liquids on board a plane, mix them in the loo and then use them to incapacitate, a cbrn attack or use as explosives. 100ml was considered too small a volume to do anything meaningful. Obviously that doesn't cover nerve agents like novochek or sarin which are fatal in minute doses.

i appreciate that not everyone understands why there measures were put in place. The threat of terrorism is still high and I can assure you that it is taken very seriously at the airport.

you mention "telling a woman she can't take her blusher" or whatever. I'll remind you that females have been involved in high profile terror attacks, can be forced into terrorist activities. Not all terrorists look like Osama Bin Laden

In fact as a result of an actual terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks on transatlantic flights, discovered in the UK before it could be carried out, in 2006 (so not post 7/11).

Can you decant? You can pick up contact lens cases quite cheaply off Amazon. I find these really good for 2-3 nights worth.

Oblomov24 · 13/04/2024 15:37

I don't need to be patronised. I'm not stupid. I'm well aware that some are women and don't all look like Bin laden. Hmm

I still can't grasp that some jobsworth at security telling a woman that a blusher or a lip salve is a liquid, fits the "not everyone understands why there measures were put in place.". I'm well aware of the history, thank you. I just think that some of it is overkill / computer says no.

Then why are you saying it's a con if you KNOW that this is response to an actual terrorist plot?!

That's not patronising. That's saying that frankly you are being ridiculous and it's not a big deal to just get on with it until the planned technology upgrade is rolled out.

NameChangedAgainn · 13/04/2024 15:42

They can be quite strict. Last time I was there, I took my own plastic bag looked too big so they made me put everything into one of their bags (it all fit luckily).
A friend took two plastic bags, put them in separate trays, and then both were randomly selected for checking - they made her throw away everything she couldn't fit into one bag.

coldcallerbaiter · 13/04/2024 15:46

So irritating because you fly back at other airports abroad that have the tech, even tiny ones

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2024 15:57

@TimeandMotion I know the rules. That's why I didn't put lipstick in the clear plastic bag (at Gatwick). Didn't stop security having a different opinion though even if they were wrong.

LoserWinner · 13/04/2024 16:06

Why on earth should you take all that gunk on holiday anyway?

Winter42 · 13/04/2024 16:07

Flossflower · 13/04/2024 13:37

Is that because perfume is flammable?

No idea. He couldn't say. Just said the scammer said no. He did say I could arrange to have it posted to me or something but I was with a school trip and trying to herd 20 teenagers through security so could t faff about! Luckily it was only cheapo M&s perfume.

You’re limited to up to 1,000ml that have to be in containers no larger than 100ml, so about ten items that can fit in the bag. I have a lot of items! Currently the list consists of about 9 items, but that’s not counting the hard pressed cream products I want to take, so may go over the limit.

You can take a lot more than 10 items. I always do.

You could take 20 50ml containers or 30 30ml containers provided they fit inside the bag.

TimeandMotion · 13/04/2024 16:17

OK but for you it was no big deal as you just moved the lipstick to your bag. For OP, the lipstick or some other item may have to be chucked as her bag is going to be so full that the lipstick may not fit into it. That is the point where she could refer politely to the published rules.

I guess your post (now that you have clarified that it was at Gatwick) does perhaps warn her that there is always a risk of the rules being interpreted incorrectly by the staff, and perhaps to err on the side of caution. But where would that end?

NannyGythaOgg · 13/04/2024 16:41

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 14:10

Sorry, I completely fabricated it! I was basing it on no more than 100ml sized containers, up to 1,000ml max and so thought it was no more than 10 items, which is wrong.

Most of my larger liquid items are 30ml, so as long as the total is under 1,000 then it’s good. Just a bit bulky.

The clear plastic bag they are carried in has to be 1,000 ml max too - Stupid but thems the rules, I've had to change my stuff from one of my bags that could hold more than 1000 ml bor one of their exact size ones. I had less than 800ml all together so there was no problem overall, just that I couldn't use the bigger bag

mondaytosunday · 13/04/2024 16:42

Depends on the person doing the checking. I was in one line and the guy was 'to the letter' and pretty rude about it (barking orders and if you asked a question just barked louder). My kids were in the other queue and did not have to remove their laptop from their bags etc. while my line had to remove everything and put it in separate bins. Mine was all jackets/hoodies off, theirs just jackets.
I wouldn't risk it.

Wow that’s quite the routine! Moisturiser and primer I’m sure you could get as minis but I find my sunscreen/ a well moisturised face is better than primer? Charlotte tilbury sells her flawless filter in a travel size. Could you contour with a dark concealer if your palette is big and limit it to 1 blush? I assume the liquid highlighter is small. Maybe switch blushers and bronzer to powder? Especially if going somewhere hot!

MissyB1 · 13/04/2024 16:59

I dont mind security imposing the rules (after all they don't write them), but I do hate them barking/ shouting and being unpleasant for no reaon. I work in a public facing role and wouldnt dream of behaving like some of the airport security staff.

Last month I flew back from the other side of the world and I had to go through customs and hand luggage checks 3 times. Despite I of these countries being renowned for ‘Hi Tech’, I still had to get my liquids checked 3 times.

tastydiner · 13/04/2024 17:09

Staff are a bit vocal but it must be frustrating when there are still passengers, all these years on with bags full of huge bottles of liquids such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc or they go through the scanners with change in their pockets, car keys etc. May be it’s just me but it’s clear on approach to security what you have to do. There are plenty of posters and even tv screens with videos running showing you what to do.

We flew a few months ago and a guy tried to get a spanner and a hammer through security. He had wrapped them in his socks in this carry on bag. He went ballistic when staff told him no.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2024 17:14

The clear bag has always had a max size of 20 x 20cm so I don't know why people are saying its got smaller. It's about the size of a small resealable freezer bag and that's what we usually use.
