How strict at Gatwick - liquids

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 12:54

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

If you need three blushers you’ve picked the wrong colour.

Why is a problem to buy products you aren't used to? Why are so people totally wedded to one particular brand? I just don't believe that. A few people with be idiots who insist they have to take the entire contents of the make up department at Boots as well as half a tonne of other bathroom products saying they are "essential". Frankly they need a reality check. It's not a hardship to rationalise for a week. You won't die (given the reason for the restrictions this is a point which is significant).

I've travelled all over Europe and we always end up going to the supermarket. The range of brands typically includes stuff you will be familiar with anyway in most countries. I don't know how a family of 4 is going to get through more than 100ml of most products in a week either.

Honestly, I swear so people need to get out of their bubble and into the real world some days.

Where did l suggest that was a problem. I certainly did not say that, l mentioned introducing to hitherto unknown products. It’s a positive. I travel frequently to/from Singapore for work. The best hair conditioner l have ever used comes from there. Introduction is hardly a negative word.

thanks everyone again for some helpful tips. I think my primary source of confusion is still what is a liquid when it comes to make up, the terminology is all a bit random.

I don’t need three blushers, I want three blushers. My confusion comes from if the blushers are counted as limited items (liquids) or not (lipsticks etc) as there seems to be a greyish area.

But apparently most of OP's stuff is blusher creams or other things I've never heard of but aren't very liquid and can't be decanted. So in this instance, of she's insisting on bringing all this faffy and expensive stuff I can't see how booking a bag isn't less faff and not that much more expensive.

Cream blusher, lipstick etc can be decanted into contact lens pots.

I'm sure they can. I'm just saying it sounds like a colossal faff and booming a bag in would be far easier.

I have bright pink hair. Mist shampoos are the equivalent of washing up liquid. Even colour shampoo is designed for blonde rather than vibrant colours. So I take the one that doesn’t pull my colour out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also have sensitive skin so soaps, creams and suncream that doesn’t cause rashes are pretty crucial too.

Then you are the rare exception I mention and you still are capable of decanting products to a suitable size if it's that crucial.

HTH

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 14/04/2024 11:31

Either don't take make up (you will be holiday give your skin a break) or put it in the hold.

They are strict. Every airport is.

I travel weekly.

Waiting for luggage is a colossal waste of time.

I have already said I do that. (I travel every week.)

Maybe. I think taking all the make-up is the biggest waste of time so faffing about decanting it seems like even more a waste of time than a) not bothering at all or b) paying a fee to not have to worry about it.

But we're all different in what we find a waste of time.

theduchessofspork · 14/04/2024 11:42

I don’t put anything like lipstick or crème blush in the liquids bag, never been asked to and I fly all the time

Less of the judgy tone about the faffy stuff maybe.

The OP likes it so the faffiness or not of make up is not material to this thread.

I’d assume the OP is travelling with others who will only take hand luggage so checking in isn’t an option.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/04/2024 11:47

How strict are they? As strict as they are required to be. I for one am glad of it.

What's judgy? I'm sure I do lots of things that people find faffy and pointless. It's a problem I would chose to solve by chucking money at it if it were me. Others might find the decanting and getting it all to fit rather satisfying.

yeahandno · 14/04/2024 11:56

Bit off topic, but last time I flew from Gatwick I'm almost certain I didn't have to use the plastic bags, and was told to keep everything in the luggage. Maybe it was a trial thing.

I travel for work, so I need the same stuff as I have at home.

takes me 10-15 mins to top everything up once every 4-6 weeks. A lot less than queuing to check in and then collect luggage every week.

RebelWithCause · 14/04/2024 12:01

Geez! Just forego some of the slap for the duration of the flight. How hard can it be?

You’re about 15 miles wide of the point.

The OP likes faffiness. The reality is that this is a luxury and that safety concerns mean you either find a way to deal with that and just stfu or you are less faffy.

It's the whinging that it's not fair that I take issue with.

AIstolemylunch · 14/04/2024 12:17

I actively enjoy decanting shampoo etc into small bottles, it's holiday prep for me and gets me in the mood.

Anyway, the one that always confuses me is mascara, have we decided whether that's a liquid or not?

I travel from Gatwick a lot and have found them to be strict but fairly reasonable. Eh for some reason I had a brain fart last year and wrapped up some aftershave for ds whose birthday was while we were out there and they were very understanding. It was way over 100ml. They didn't even unwrap it, just put it through a different machine and scanned it.

I also had to take hold luggage as hand luggage at very short notice a couple of years ago for reasons I won't bore you with and they were happy for me to have everything in 7 or 8 plastic bags even though we were only 5 people. I'd say the number of plastic bag thing is the thing they're least strict on, but I've never tried this as a single traveller. I take my own bag which is slightly bigger than their ones that I know everything fits in and has a zip lock fastening.

I have also been going through Gatwick around once every couple of months for 4 years with a small bag with a tube of toothpaste and a small deodorant in an obscure front pocket that I had forgotten was there and they only found it last week 🤣

OK. Fair enough. Still sounds like a big faff to me but like I say we all find different things faffy. The OP obviously does find the idea of trying to fit it all in faffy hence the complaining about it. So buying a hold bag seems like the easiest option for her. Not sure why that's controversial.

Itsaloadofbollocksbut · 14/04/2024 10:04

I travel with hand luggage precisely so that I do t have to wait around for hold luggage……

And the compromise you have to make to enable that is limited liquids…
You can have speed or you can have everything you want to take.
Liquids are not an issue for me because I don’t wear make up or have complicated skin care.

notacooldad · 14/04/2024 23:05

Why can't you take liquids through security but can buy them at Boots a few minutes after you've been checked? I had half a tube of tooth paste taken from me. Once through security I went and bought a new tube.

Because it’s about whether you have replaced liquids with something that can make a bomb, as nearly happened before the rules came in. If you buy it in the airport they know you haven’t done that. Pretty simple really.

Facepalm.

The 'toothpaste' they are worried about, isn't toothpaste.
