How strict at Gatwick - liquids

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 12:54

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

I had a telling off from a security guy in Gatwick for not putting my brow pomade in the clear bag . I didn't realise it was classed as a liquid product as it's solid . But like a poster said above , if you can spread it they must class it as liquid . So lesson learnt and I put it all in the clear bag now . My husband behind me didn't get told off for not putting his carmex in a clear bag though 🤷‍♀️.

It's supposed to be 1 clear bag per person so if you have 2 you might get stuff taken off you

Possibly but I saw security staff telling women to split their toiletries into two bags last summer because they were cramming too much into one bag.

EventuallyDecluttered · 13/04/2024 13:22

I was told lipstick still counts as liquid, definitely a bit of luck involved, I don't carry mush make-up and still think the whole thing is a pain in the arse. I know you can buy all the toiletries airside or when you get there but then you end up wasting a lot as you can't bring them back.

It isn't that much though really @cardibach. Sunscreen, after sun, toothpaste, deodorant, shower gel, perfume, moisturiser, cleansing cream, shampoo, hair serum type stuff; first aid stuff like insect repellent, germolene, stuff for insect bites. I would've say that that's that much and I've probably missed out a few. When I flew last year with no hold luggage I had to make quick decisions.

Oblomov24 · 13/04/2024 13:23

I've had Nivea lipsalve declared as liquid before. I just can't accept that. Can't wait for changes.

Bramshott · 13/04/2024 13:25

I have not found them super strict about 10 items as long as it all fits in a clear bag. Some things like lipstick & mascara tubes are small.

Flapearedknave · 13/04/2024 13:14

You can order everything you need to lcik and collect at the boots inside the terminal.

I do this for sunscreen and shampoo etc whenever I go away.

It's expensive way if doing it, probably the only way for a lot of stuff. Being held to ransom.

tobee · 13/04/2024 13:26

Also if you buy stuff airside aren't you then fucked for the return journey?

StMarieforme · 13/04/2024 13:27

Sorry OP but all I can think is that this is one of the biggest 'first world problems' I've ever encountered.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2024 13:27

There isn't a limit on the number of items as long as they fit in the bag and the bag can be sealed

Chersfrozenface · 13/04/2024 13:27

This is what I do.

As much stuff as possible in solid form - shampoo, conditioner, soap if you need it (I'm fine with hotel bodywash), pressed powder, pressed powder blusher, eyebrow pencil and brush thingy, solid deodorant. Also make up remover wipes.

In 10ml or smaller containers if possible, usually decanted into travel bottles - face moisturiser, toner, travel size hairspray, smallest possible primer and foundation, travel size toothpaste. Also in clear plastic bag - lip salve, lipstick, mascara, eyebrow mascara, which are counted as liquids usually in. Perfume decanted into handbag sprays x2.

Sunscreen and after sun, if needed, I buy airside, ditto body lotion.

Maybe but millions of passengers are experiencing currently and have over the last X number of years.

I was at Gatwick last week with all the toiletries in my bag for the three of us (in two clear plastic bags). I took them out my bag and put them both in the same tray with some other bits, no one cared. I expect they will just assume you are travelling with other people and not worry that there is more than one bag. If you're worried put one plastic bag in with your main bag and the other in with any electronics/coat. I wouldn't worry about the 'one bag' rule.

Movinghouseatlast · 13/04/2024 13:31

Yes, they are strict at Gatwick. Don't take 2 clear bags, if they find out you will have one confiscated.

I have had my luggage totally unpacked at Gatwick. They found a single contact lens which must have been 5ml of liquid. Also have had a solid crystal deodorant confiscated because it is the same shape as a roll on!!! They threatened to have me arrested when I tried to explain it was literally a rock.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 13/04/2024 13:31

Solid won't count but you are only allowed one clear bag. It also has to close.

The Gatwick website is crystal clear that lipstick is not a liquid, can be carried on board and does not need to go in the bag.

If I was flying hand luggage only I’d buy most of that when I got to my destination. If it’s essential to human life you can do that, even in more out of the way places. For a few days hand luggage only I’d pack shampoo and conditioner (because it is a specific one for my scalp issues), deodorant and toothpaste. Maybe shower gel and anti perspirant. Maybe a small sun screen to use until I could get to a shop.

drawnfrommemory · 13/04/2024 13:20

Take your own plastic bag as well - the one I got going through security at Gatwick last week was much smaller than I remember!

Max size is 20cmx 20cm though, website is clear.

Cheeesus · 13/04/2024 13:34

There isn’t a ten item limit. You can probably for everything into the clear bag?

TinyYellow · 13/04/2024 13:35

Get one of the approved toiletries bags off Amazon. I’ve always used them, never had a problem and you can fit more in them than the little bags they provide.

I wouldn't risk anything expensive. I had a 100ml bottle of perfume.in my hand luggage taken off me at Luton recently. Put through a scanner and told it had to be confiscated.

Is that because perfume is flammable?

Longma · 13/04/2024 13:38

Is that because perfume is flammable?

Perfume is generally fine. I often take a 30ml bottle through.

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 13:39

Thank you everyone for the advice, it’s good to know there’s no limit on number of items, just total volume. Time to start playing make up jenga to optimise the 20x20 space!

If you are only taking cabin luggage then decanting stuff is your friend.
you can have as many small bottles / jars as you want as long as they fit in the see through plastic bag. Your carrier will have dimensions but generally I just take a small zip top sandwich bag. Boots sell little bottles and jar sets

tobee · 13/04/2024 13:44

It's annoying to have to buy tiny versions of everything or to buy stuff at captured market shops airside or tourist area shops. Hopefully boots, smiths, Superdrug don't have mark up at their airport branches.

You can buy tiny empty bottles to pre fill at home of course. Although it's quite a fussy exercise.
