How strict at Gatwick - liquids

BranchGold · 13/04/2024 12:54

Going away on holiday next week and thinking about packing my make up/toiletries. A lot of my products are hard cream blushers/bronzers, lipsticks that technically come under the liquid rules, but can I ask if anyone has had these flagged/removed?

These new scanners and the liquid restrictions being scrapped can’t come soon enough!

Why can't you take liquids through security but can buy them at Boots a few minutes after you've been checked? I had half a tube of tooth paste taken from me. Once through security I went and bought a new tube.
Facepalm.

The 'toothpaste' they are worried about, isn't toothpaste.

Jeez I've been dim and not thought things through!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

They are strict and I've had plenty taken off me and Binned. If your not sure your under, can't decant them you need to be happy to loose it as a rule. There's plenty of things you can decant like moisturiser to bring the overall volume down.

I just buy extra at boots or save 1/3 empty for flights. But I decant moisturise and foundation.

If you leave it in the case they have also pulled that out - ega handheld of 30ml then they test it and swab my bag everytime I leave a liquid by mistake.

Every time? I get once but…

l always pack my clear bag at home and pop it in my bag to travel to the airport. At security take it out and then put it back airside. Then l hit Boots for the larger stuff. Remember you are restricted on the return as well though.

Why airport boots? It’s going to be way more expensive than buying it when you get there, which is what I do with sunscreen because you need lots and you will use it. I don’t get the difficulty in keeping below limits for anything else.

StarlightLady · 15/04/2024 11:52

@cardibach - Where is “there”? lt depends on where you are flying to. Boots airside is usually cheaper than Singapore (not famous for its sun, but when it’s out, it’s a huge blast), Thailand, France and several other but not all destinations in mainland Europe. Australia is cheaper. So, obviously, it depends where you are going.

Edited because of typos.

I’ve been to quite a range of places, though not Singapore, and I e always found it cheaper when I get to my destination. It does depend, obviously. I suppose I. very touristy beach areas it may be more expensive.

When we were in Mexico the suncream in our resort was extortionate. I was glad we had brought plenty with us

Paris is not a touristic beach area either and it’s colossal. The same applies with Lisbon. I’m talking supermarket prices as well.

Technically, chain shops should not charge more airside than landside or on the high street. But l do wonder.

Singapore is a beautiful modern city where culture, temples high rises and history meet. I commend it to you. x

It’s on my list!

Worst for the shouting / barking airport staff was in Majorca.
They seemed to love bossing everyone about and making it obvious you wasn't wanted.
I know it's busy and super stressful , but they were clearly annoyed ( at everyone!)
Worst bit about flying are the airports or seeing those huge canisters of liquids they have confiscated since all this was a thing! I often wonder if the staff are able to take some of it home as much of it looks new / unopened.
Hurrah for the new scanners , if they are ever installed at the bigger airports

Chain shops DO charge more airside.

litwrally last weekend 150 ml soltan clear and cooling F50 spray -£8.80. Today I looked in brum city centre - 200 ml of same 7 quid or cheaper I think with advantage card.

we were lucky - 2 easy burn adults in a heat wave in Lisbon - used approx 90% of the spay can …. And surprisingly for a city we didn’t see any decent supermarkets ( in alfama where we stayed it was a very limited mini mart selection of stuff ) so we’d have had to pay pharmacy sunscreen prices - didn’t look but certainly in Spain that’s a significant premium compared to a supermarket

For clarity l said “Technically chain shops should not charge more airside.” Not that they didn’t. UK airports are now privately owned. In the days of the British Airports Authority, it was a requirement to charge the same; no longer the case.

I'm dyslexic but honestly I think I might have adhd..I always forget something. Its good they find it I guess. I put the handheld in and think "I will pop that in the bag at the airport" then forget to

SparkyBlue · 24/04/2024 21:07

Our local airport has had the scanners for two or three years now. It's an absolute dream to go through security. I think keys were the only things that needed to be removed from our bags everything else just stayed in the bag
