She has received the letter, according to the solicitor’s!! I’ve just rang them.

Ring doorbell is back in, spare battery is ordered but the weather has turned shit so no checking the patch out today!

I bet she poisons the soil with salt before she leaves so you can't grow anything for years 🤣

This is reminding me of Hannah Lynn's Peas and Carrots books, and yes, they are set on an allotment and worth reading for allotment shenanigans

Loved those books 🙂

More like for a week or two given the amount of rain.
I have been googling and while salt does indeed damage the earth (and is a problem in some areas) it would take a lot to be effective, probably over a kg per square metre, and can be irrigated away.

AcrossthePond55 · 22/04/2024 16:35

I might be tempted to remove the topsoil and replace it if I truly felt there were shenanigans. Or shit-nanigans as the case may be. I don't care if human feces IS good for a garden, I just couldn't (psychologically) be dealing with that.

But I think Babs knows that in the long run she has to still live with the neighbours who have plots and that poisoning the soil wouldn't sit well with any gardener, I wouldn't think. Especially if she wants to find her way back at some point to a patch of soil nearby.

viques · 22/04/2024 18:06

I think Babs has known from the outset that she didn’t have any claim to the land, she has hung on, either hoping that the OP didn’t cotton on to it, or enjoying the “woe is me” drama of it all.

I reckon if she has any sense she will put her hands up now she has had the solicitors letter, say fair cop gov and shift her stuff. She might try to come to an “agreement” with the OP about any thing that has been planted this year, which is fair enough since she has presumably looked after the plot well over the years, improved the soil, kept weeds at bay etc. if the previous owner had no interest in it it would now be a jungle of alkanet, dandelions, brambles, nettle and dock.

Or it will rage on until there are more dead bodies than an average episode of Midsommer.

Delphinium20 · 22/04/2024 18:11

OP, I think you should have a manure load scheduled for May 21.

No reason to wait until then. Get it delivered this week so that it can mature on site!

AhBiscuits · 22/04/2024 19:35

My allotment is shit atm due to the endless rain. Can you ask Babs for some tips?

Move sites😂 seriously tho. One side of my city is flooded the other for rhubarb coming out their ears by the kg

Also..... I think Babs has officially lost the plot

😂

DisabledDemon · 22/04/2024 22:50

Well, I can't wait to hear what the fallout is from Babs receiving the solicitor's letter. Will she go thermonuclear, opting for a scorched earth policy? Perhaps the OP needs to hang around the allotment for a while to ensure that Babs doesn't salt the soil.

I've wondered about Midsommer for years. Now that it must surely be the murder capital of the world, how on earth do they ever sell any houses there? Given the amount of murders, there must be an absolute glut of properties but how do they find anyone stupid enough to move to the place?

(Yes, I do know it's fictional but still ...) 🤔

A bit like why do people invite Miss Marple to their country houses for the weekend knowing she always packs a black outfit just in case……

Do you think, having arrived there, that they declare that it's going to be 'the best Christmas ever'?

And why white people live on St Marie? It was three series in before a black person was murdered.

And actually there is a link there with Eastenders, that's where they all end up either dead or arrested for murder.

Treaclewell · 23/04/2024 10:06

With regards to salt, farmers whose land was inundated in 53 were given a grant to tide them over, but actually managed to get crops earlier than expected. They were brassicas, though, which derive from coastal plants like seakale.
William the Bastard's salting of the north, the effect of which can be seen in Domesday, may just be due to having slaughtered the peasants.

godmum56 · 23/04/2024 11:18

I know this is wiki but I have always wondered about "salting earth" because of the amount of salt it would take. Allegedly the Romans did it at Carthage but modern thought is that it was a symbolic gesture. From the amount of salt it takes to kill one weed, it would have taken tons to properly treat a significant amount of agricultural ground. So yes, the sea overwhelming land would probabaly have an effecgt, but popping down to tesco for a bag of saxa then probabaly not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salting_the_earth

It’s ok they moved to Kembleford (Father Brown).

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/04/2024 12:54

I’ve found a good article about the supposed salting of Carthage. Kiwi Hellenist

I don’t believe for a moment that northern England was salted. Too wet to have much effect. Burning the crops and tools and killing the livestock would have starved people well enough.

Salting the earth

The earth wasn't salted at Carthage, but it was at some cities. And the salt was intended as a fertiliser, not a herbicide.

But have you noticed in the most recent series - mixed group, and the black person is always the murderer?
It happened a few times, so I started to notice.

Still can't work out why one of the amazing young local police detectives that we have had need a middle aged white british man to be the lead detective!
