Who's your favourite stand-up comedian?

Mine's Kevin Bridges.

We've just watched his new show "Long Overdue Catch-up". Amazing.

His stories about being a working-class guy in a middle-class world resonate so much - me and DP regularly talk about this.
His story about piles had me absolutely howling.

I just love him. I have a bit of a crush on him.
He seems like a genuinely decent chap. I'd be very surprised to read about him having an affair or just generally being a dick.

In that order. But JS is head and shoulders above. Seen them all perform live too.

Have long rated Hannah Gadsby as super smart, compelling and hilariously awesome. Am genuinely gutted she’s now crossed over to the they/them dark-side 😭

Frank Skinner, Kevin Bridges (hoose rice) and Rhod Gilbert. I have also found George Lewis on Instagram and would like to go and see him live, the insta videos are very good.

We like Kevin Bridges too... house rice????? 🤣😂

That is one of those well-observed sketches that had a ten year old and two 40something parents equally roaring. I know zero about stand-up comedy, but I once saw part of a documentary (I think about Glasgow?) that had, I think, both of KB’s parents on it, and they both had natural comic timing.

Jeff Arcuri, I have tickets to see him in a couple of weeks but he's in the hospital atm and I'm panicking he won't be able to fly over.

We have tickets for Jeff Acuri in a few weeks too. Didn't realise he was poorly. I am really looking forward to it

I’ve seen loads of live standup comedy, starting with Ken Dodd in 1980….! These are my favourites:

Tom Stade is my favourite stand-up ever, he’s bang on the money, well worth seeing him if you can.

Mickey Flanagan was fantastic when we saw him at the King’s Head in Crouch End in 2000/2001 before he got famous with his “out out” sketch.

Russell Kane and Russell Howard both v good.

Joe Wells is great, saw him recently https://www.joewells.org.uk/. If you are neurodivergent, or if you love someone who is, it’s well worth seeing him.

Jo Brand is still fantastic (and she writes wonderful sitcoms & films too). I saw her live in the early 90s and she was so different and so clever.

I’m looking forward to seeing Milo McCabe/Troy Hawke and Fern Brady later this year. Has anyone seen them live?

I’ve seen Russell Kane several times and always laugh til I cry. Think he’s quite Marmite though!

I absolutely rated Russell Kane so highly but seeing his stand up put me off massively. Lazy, taking the piss (not in a funny way) and quite a nasty misogynistic vibe when talking about his new baby - something along the lines of “it can fuck off in a room of its own - I’m not going to be one of those sad married men masturbating on their own in the spare room…”

I’m surprised so many folks like Sarah Millican too - she just stands spouting unfunny filth about her fanny and toilet habits in a northern accent. That’s seems to be it. Nothing clever. I guess that must do it for some…

I totally agree with all the others on the thread - my faves are Ricky Gervais, Josh Widdicombe, Simon Evans, Jason Manford, Lee Mack, Flo and Joan(?), Kevin Hart, Chris Rock, Kathryn Ryan, Romesh, Liza what’s her face (little mermaid one), I’ve seen quite a few of the UK ones live and they were great.

Rhod Gilbert
Greg Davies
Lee Mack and Bob Mortimer (although not sure they do stand up anymore)

Foxblue · 11/04/2024 19:38

Greg Davies, Rhod Gilbert - Greg absolutely lights up a room live, cried laughing on his last tour. Phil Wang, Fern Brady, Lou Saunders... (honestly, Taskmaster is a dream show for me) Maisie Adam - what a gem. Tim Key - a total master of the craft.
Joe Lycett - I totally understand why people might find him annoying, but his stand up has always been brilliant, he LOVES his local community in bham and genuinely just loves getting people together and celebrating (and if you've seen his latest tour you will know the lengths he goes to) he takes such joy in doing silly things for the sake of making people giggle, and he uses his influence for good. And I still giggle at his 'I'm very right wing' joke.
Ali Wong, Taylor Tomlinson, Daniel Sloss
All time fav has to be Daniel Kitson though - if you know, you know!

slightly different but the Dame Edna Everage/Sir Les Patterson show was absolutely hilarious

And George Carlin

i really like Russell Kane too and Peter Kay in his garlic bread phase

Awaydays · 11/04/2024 20:09

Billy Connolly and Kevin Bridges are my absolute favourites, but I'm Glaswegian so their stories and sense of humour definitely resonates with me.

Hurryuphumphreygeorgeiswaiting · 11/04/2024 20:17

I have a soft spot for Micky Flanagan and he is easy on the eye. I was born and bred in London but moved away when I married 'A bit of posh'. His humour resonates with me and I find him hilarious.

Saw John Bishop before he was really famous and he was brilliant, very normal, which made him even funnier.
