How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

private education for my children

I would probably spend 900 swiss francs on a hotel room for good night's sleep.

shellyleppard · 08/04/2024 10:48

Lego.... definitely Lego!!!! 😍🤣

Ahh yes, private education I can understand. But I meant a personal, physical item.

I've got a winter coat that cost four hundred quid.

I have spent 1.5k on a retro full size gaming arcade machine. I also have a collection of Ladybird books that are worth about 1k as I have 1,500 of them, a few rare ones. DH has spent 2k on a rowing machine. The most spent on a single time of jewellery is 4k.

I think you mean item and not a service or a holiday but we did spend 10k on a holiday about 6 years ago so that was the biggest purchase. I know you said not cars but we will be buying a campervan so purely for leisure for about 60k next year.

The point is that 30k ring may be the equivalent of you buying a ring in Argos for £100. When I was a girl I read how an Arab Sheik had tipped a doorman 5k, I was blown away and then I realised it would be like me giving someone 5 pence. It’s all relative.

single
no kids
£50k salary

and you’ve never spent more than £200 on a physical item beyond house and car

what do you spend intangible things like holidays?

My engagement ring was about £5000, 12 yrs ago
Wedding dress. A designer brand and would have been £3000 at the time, but I found one on ebay for £800.

Day to day though, I don't spend alot on clothes/accessories. I have a leather handbag I bought from aldi about 5yrs ago and often get clothes from the TU, George or M&S. I could afford more expensive items, but prefer not to unless its a special event. I WFH and rarely go out now 😆

Paintings by our favourite artist.

peloton2024 · 08/04/2024 10:59

Min wage and I spent about £1500 on a peloton

shellyleppard · 08/04/2024 11:00

Mermaidin I've tried so hard to resist it but I'm weak 🤣🤣🤣

My friend used to work in the Chanel shop. She had a women ask whether she preferred the lime green or neon orange underpants. They were sheer, nylon with with some lacy bits around the edges and uncomfortable looking elastic on the legs and waist band- £800 a pair!

My friend thought they were hideous, but smiled and said 'Well they are both lovely aren't they?'. The woman bought 2 of each colour! 😧

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/04/2024 11:09

We have several bicycles which cost several thousand pounds, but we do a lot of cycling. A few pieces of artwork around the £5,000-£6,000 mark each. I have several rare single malt whiskies which also cost over £2,000 each.

However, when I hear people with children talk about spending £2,000 a month on childcare, even all my most expensive purchases combined cost less than what several sets of childcare over the years ends up costing, with nothing to show for it.

very similar to me. I have a few nice bags and coats for work as need to look smart, but I make my things last years.

I also hardly ever buy anything new. always second hand and am shocked at new item prices

EnglishBluebell · 08/04/2024 11:10

My god I don't earn a quarter of what you do OP and we have DC. I can't even buy a cup of tea out so I can't really contribute to this thread, other than to say bloody well done! £50k wow

Teq · 08/04/2024 11:11

I really like hotels so will happily spend £2k+ for a two- night break.

People are horrified and trot out the “you could have two weeks in Benidorm for that” line, without a hint of irony.

Oh of course I've had holidays. I meant clothes, shoes, jewellery. I realise now I must be very cheap 🙈

I bought a leather trench coat for £250 - gutted it's got a visible scratch mark on it now (a few years after purchasing) but I still love it so I wear it

Well, you have cared for children to show for it!
Like a PP we spend an awful lot of money on private education. Physical items though… can’t think of anything I own that cost more than £300. We’re not really into ‘stuff’, and prefer to spend money on experiences.

Ooh actually I’ve just remembered I bought a pair of Jimmy Choos for £500 about 12 years ago. Only worn them once. Must remember to put them on Vinted.

moreminieggsplease · 08/04/2024 11:19

£400 on a Bugaboo pushchair.

A few hundred on a vacuum cleaner.

In both cases, they have proved to be worth it in my opinion but I had to consider them carefully for a long time and spent ages looking for cash back offers, discount codes. etc.

I would say I'm a bit of a spendaholic. I just enjoy buying stuff. These days it's mostly for my child, but I never buy designer brands for any of us. Most my clothes are Next or supermarkets.

That said, although £30k on a ring sounds a lot, I think if I was loaded, I could see myself justifying it somehow.

Jasmin1971 · 08/04/2024 11:19

I spent £2000 on a high end bass guitar for my husband 20 years ago. Now way could I do that now.
