How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

We were talking about this the other day. I believe that even if I were a multi-millionaire I wouldn't spend stupid amounts on items of clothing, jewellery, handbags or shoes. But who knows once you're that rich.....

Holidays I would spend on - and housing.

Cars - no way. I just intrinsically feel that it's wrong that you lose so much value the minute you drive off the forecourt. The newest car I've ever owned was probably 8 years old - but however rich I was I'd never buy new.

So it's not really about the price, more about the value........

£8k on a Rolex. Bought it myself for my 40th and worked very hard in my business to make the money to pay for it. It’s my favorite thing and makes me happy every day looking at it. I was a single mum then.

Met and married DH and the engagement ring was £9k. I call it my twenty grand hand and sometimes worry someone will chop it off.

My car was only £3.5K 🤣 I love that too. I don’t spend on handbags or shoes or clothes really so my watch is the one.

Teenagehorrorbag · 10/04/2024 22:58

I did buy an antique bed for about £1400 20 years ago, and a Persian rug for about £600. I had a good salary in those days, but didn't tell my new DH how much the bed cost! I also paid £1200 recently on vets bills when my cat was hit by a car - also might have downplayed that to DH......Grin

$4,200 for an embroidery machine for personal use. Paid over two years. It broke after one year and was unrepairable. I was devastated and the company were crap about it.

luckily I found a machine worth $7,500 for just $1,000 brand new in a box and got that and it works so much better. I felt sick spending that money.

We have several bicycles which cost several thousand pounds, but we do a lot of cycling. A few pieces of artwork around the £5,000-£6,000 mark each. I have several rare single malt whiskies which also cost over £2,000 each.

However, when I hear people with children talk about spending £2,000 a month on childcare, even all my most expensive purchases combined cost less than what several sets of childcare over the years ends up costing, with nothing to show for it.

I think having your kids safe and cared for is not "nothing to show for it".

7.5k on a boob job after having dc

I bought a leather trench coat for £250 - gutted it's got a visible scratch mark on it now (a few years after purchasing) but I still love it so I wear it

Try The Handbag Clinic to get the scratch repaired. They refinished my favourite Doc Martins.

I think my iPhone and MacBook were both over 1k each. My most expensive personal items are usually tech related.

Same here, and brass instruments. I don't do pricey clothes, shoes, bags, etc because I work in the kind of STEM job that can involve trenches in the ground and crawling under lab benches.

50k for a car

A few bags for around 2.5k each

Dental implants 2 at just over 2k each

A massive bed 3.5k and the same for garden table and chairs.

Holidays which obviously aren’t things-a crazy amount.

Edited

I spent a grand on my mattress. I have sciatica so getting something I could sleep on without pain was critical.

Never skimp on your bed because if your sleep is shit, your whole life will be.

TerriPie · 10/04/2024 23:21

Probably £500 on a new wedding ring as my original was far too big - my fingers seem to be shrinking!

(Sure I'm the only person ever who went from size 8 young bride to middle aged size 12 but fingers are shrinking!)

sparklychair · 10/04/2024 23:40

£10,000 on a hand carved four poster bed. We've been sleeping on it for over 30 years now so I suppose that's less than £1 a night.

APassionFruitMartini · 10/04/2024 23:41

£1.5+ on designer handbags.

Fair few coats or pairs of boots over £500.

Many daily clothing items £150-200 such as jeans, dresses, winter coat, but they last for years and years and don’t have to be replaced often

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/04/2024 00:27

Most I’ve spent on clothing/ jewellery/ shoes etc is about £120 on a pair of boots and that was a one off. £80 is usually my absolute cut off for shoes and £50 would be absolute max for most clothes, maybe I’d stretch to £60 for a coat at a push but I mostly shop in sales. I don’t wear jewellery. £200 seems expensive for a single item to me!

That said I have bought an iPad and a Nintendo switch both about £300 and think my phone (bought outright not on contract) was over £400. I don’t buy stuff like that often though, only upgrade things when they break or start noticeably underperforming.

Dont own a house and rented flat is furnished so haven’t had to buy any furniture yet but expect when I do some of that will be £££.

Rhaenys · 11/04/2024 06:12

If furniture counts, my sofa was £2600. I spent about £1200 on a MacBook - which broke beyond repair right after the warrantee ended!

For clothes and jewellery the amount is probably quite low. I have a necklace that was around £80, I’m pretty sure that’s the most expensive piece I own. I seem to remember spending a little over £100 on shoes a few times. I think the most was about £120. Dresses, coats etc. I don’t recall ever spending three figures.

Nothing to show for it 😆😆😆😆

KarenandFour · 11/04/2024 10:53

I spent £200 on a handbag but I haggled as it was originally more!
if I had loads of money and I wanted something and I could afford it I’d probably just buy it whatever it cost

pollymere · 11/04/2024 11:45

I have a ring I wear on my wedding finger that cost hundreds of pounds. It's not my engagement ring. My husband fully supported me buying it just because. I lost the main stone and chose the new one myself in Hatton Garden. It's valued at £3000 for insurance.

PloddingAlong21 · 11/04/2024 12:16

I spend on my home - furniture etc but still shop around on the prices. We’ve invested all money into extension and nearing the end.

We are very good earners (with 1 child age 7). We don’t really buy ‘things’. I buy as and when I need it but don’t have any sort of thing like watches or shoes. Contemplating repurposing the spend from the house into savings for private education for my son for secondary but the schools round here are good so there may not be the need.

My lavish spending goes on holidays - disneyworld this year which is still sensible money given Disney is obscene regardless of where you stay.

I have always been really careful with my money, not frugal. I would rather spend on experiences than stuff.

therealcookiemonster · 11/04/2024 12:17

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 08/04/2024 10:44

I would probably spend 900 swiss francs on a hotel room for good night's sleep.

😂well you better hope they didn't forget to switch off any alarms

therealcookiemonster · 11/04/2024 12:24

tomatoes.
I was encouraged by my ex gardener to grow tomatoes. little did I know they need more attention than a baby panda. and the gardener was completely shit (hence ex). i got a total of 15 tomatoes out of 7 plants. by the time I factored in the cost of the plants and his 'labour', I was down roughly £60 per tomato

Burpie · 11/04/2024 13:50

I have a ring that was about €1500 and my wedding rings were about €1000. But my husband bought me all of those... I would definitely spend £30,000 on a ring if I could afford it!

Fanlover1122 · 11/04/2024 14:59

Medical bills - spent more than 180 k.....And yes that is in the U.K. as waiting list for NHS too long......

I think it’s lifestyle creep and it all
becomes relative.....as the more you earn, usually, the more stressful the job is....so I will pay more for convenience and time. EG - when I got a new kitchen, I went to a show room near where I live, told the designer I wanted a kitchen that sold flats for the area (prime central London) the colours that I liked and then off he went with my 50 k budget (small kitchen).

peakygold · 11/04/2024 16:50

I bought a Hermes Birkin about 15 years ago for £10k. I've hardly used it because it's like dragging a suitcase around. I'm hoping it's worth more now.

Anonymous2025 · 11/04/2024 22:24

I’m currently wearing a 4 k engagement ring but obviously didn’t pay for it myself lol
I love expensive perfumes so have spend over £500 a year on them for a few years

Flightsnotfeelings · 12/04/2024 02:52

I spent £4K on a laptop, 4K on a car and £30K on a boat but the money was gifted to me so not sure if it counts?

Otherwise, the most expensive single items that I’ve bought with my own money include a PS5 for £500 and a fridge for £900. Nothing that breaks the 1K mark although my partner has his heart set on a Moncler jacket for £1.5K and a Dior one for £4K 🙄

£35K salary and 1 child for context.
