How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

I’m single, no kids and a high earner. I’ve spent €15k on one jewellery item, about €2k on a particular bag and several bags between €1-2k. Clothes wise, I’m less profligate and would baulk at anything over €150 (for everyday stuff, tops, jeans, shoes etc. Not including wool coats).

BeansOnToast32 · 08/04/2024 18:30

My dog was my most expensive purchase at £2300 in 2022.

Before that my coffee machine was the most expensive purchase at £2100.

Ineffable23 · 08/04/2024 18:40

I also don't spend much on most things...

Furniture/gadgets: I have an eBike which was a major purchase and I have two beds which were bought new, dishwasher, washing machine, cooker and fridge, and a lawn mower. Everything else I own furniture wise was either <£200 or second hand. Phone would have been £250.

Jewellery/clothing/shoes: nothing over £200 I think. A couple of coats which would be £250-£300 at full price but I have never paid that!

Makes me feel quite frugal tbh!

Oh yes, someone else mentioned a piano. I spent $40,000 on my piano - baby grand. I had always wanted to play, so decided I was going to buy a beautiful piano and start taking lessons. It's been five years now, and I still take fortnightly lessons, practice most days, and love to play.

Ooh, which breed did you get? I love dogs!

This is a brilliant and worthy purchase! I'm not musical but my sister loves the piano and has always wanted a baby grand so I can definitely understand the joy you have from it 😊

@mermaidin I think that my lack of spending comes from my DDad who was a bank manager. Not that he seemed particularly frugal or anything but it always made me consider the worth of things and not buy expensive items unless I've done a lot of thinking and researching and considering and justifying eg with the iPad.

But then again my DBro is dreadful with money so who knows!?!

EnglishBluebell · 08/04/2024 19:42

@mermaidin Oh I know you weren't gloating OP. Well done with what you've achieved. If I didn't have Parkinson's from such a young age I would've had a career. Enjoy it! I would

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 19:48

@EnglishBluebell I'm very sorry to hear about your condition. Thank you for the nice words. I hope you are happy in other ways ❤️

My dog. I spent an absolute fortune on him over the years and he was worth every single penny.

PandaG · 08/04/2024 20:05

Oh, around £350 for a pair of boots, but they were handmade to fit, to my specification. I've worn them pretty much daily through 6 or 7 winters, and they now need a resole. Huge expense when DH treated me to them, but worth it. A real example of Vimes boot index!

honeyandfizz · 08/04/2024 20:42

I spent several thousand on my teeth (not Turkey teeth btw!!). I had always hated them, they came through jagged when I was a child and left me hating them. Took me shit loads of overtime to pay for them but I have had fair few people tell me what great teeth I have, they are very natural and worth every penny.

Bemyclementine · 08/04/2024 20:47

£225 on a pair of boots.
£950 saddle.
£450 bicycle.
£150 wellies.

The saddle and bike are over 10 yrs old. Wellies 5 yrs. All still going strong.

isitbananatimealready · 08/04/2024 21:49

Other than furniture or white goods, in this house it would probably be guitars.

Mamabear487 · 09/04/2024 14:37

I didn’t buy it but I got engaged and immediately googled the cost of the ring. It’s 3k. Other than that probs £200 max on something

Summerlovin24 · 09/04/2024 14:50

300 on waterproof coat for hiking. Worth every penny.
£1950 on engagement ring which i paid foe a lot of it- now divorced. Says a lot about my marriage really
Apart from that no.

Well inside an iPhone 15. So whatever they’re worth but I pay mine on a contract over 2 years so not forking out total value at once. I have a Nintendo switch as well. They’re about £250. My MacBook Air I bought for unis was just under a grand. But after having so many useless windows devices it’s definitely been worth every penny. My wedding dress was about a grand 20 years ago. I bought a digital piano when I first started working and that was probably over a grand as well. Probably would cost more nowadays and wouldn’t be at the top of my priority spending list. Most of my purchases have been for items I use daily (other than the wedding dress and seeing as I’m divorced now it may have been a waste). I’m not rich. I’m a single parent and I’ve saved hard for the items I’ve bought. My kids have been gifts similar items by grandparents (iPad, switch). Think my Dyson was a few hundred quid as well. But i wear Primark mainly apart from my DMs and super dry winter coat that was quite expensive but those expensive things tend to last. I don’t drink or smoke though and rarely manage to go out much socialising these days so spend a lot of time at home.

Emmz1510 · 09/04/2024 15:23

I’m not really a massive spender on ‘things’. Engagement ring 15 years ago was just over £1000, wedding dress £900.
I’m fond of UGG boots which I consider quite expensive and I have a few but I try to get them on sale or their outlet page. My last pair I used Klarna to get them.
Husband bought me a Tag Heuer watch for my 40th a few years ago which is probably the most expensive thing I own apart from the house. I can’t remember how much it was but he paid for it in installments. Don’t think I’d pay any more than that for a single item, so about £2000? My laptop wasn’t that expensive and my iPhone is the model from a couple of years ago so fairly new but on contract, as is my husbands phone and daughters iPad.
Oh and I do I have a Dyson hairdryer which was a bit of a splurge…☺️

Meadowfinch · 09/04/2024 15:27

£650 on an evening dress 20 years ago. I was invited to a Christmas Ball at Buckingham Palace and was determined to look my best.

It still fits. I wear it occasionally. I've actually had quite a lot of wear out of it over the years.

DottyLottieLou · 09/04/2024 15:27

£2k on hearing aids, but life changing. Watches, jewellery, posh shoes and bags don't interest me. I am much happier getting a bargain.

PossumintheHouse · 09/04/2024 15:31

I collect antiques and once, in a moment of feeling flush madness, spent £3000 on a hand-carved antique sofa.
The most I've ever spend on clothes was £300 on a handbag and £400 on a bespoke hand-tailored silk dressing down and matching nightdress.
And I spent £2000 on a diamond ring when I got my first 'proper' job.
To me they were huge splurges, and very few and far between.

Bookkeepermum · 09/04/2024 16:32

A £5000 horse. This was 15 years ago and needed £3000 surgery 1 year later due to a sinus issue!
He was gorgeous though. Sadly passed away 3 years ago.

Coffeeebean · 09/04/2024 16:34

£5k for a horse (if that counts as an object) and another 2k for a saddle for said horse.

And she costs me about £600/month to keep (which is relatively cheap for our area)

Biggest money pit ever the little bugger!!
