How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

tomatoes.
I was encouraged by my ex gardener to grow tomatoes. little did I know they need more attention than a baby panda. and the gardener was completely shit (hence ex). i got a total of 15 tomatoes out of 7 plants. by the time I factored in the cost of the plants and his 'labour', I was down roughly £60 per tomato

Sorry but 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Most expensive purchase was a watch i bought myself in 2019 for 9k. I rarely buy clothes for myself and if i do its H&M or online. I do like my bags i bought one a couple of weeks ago for 2.5k but before that my last bag purchase was about 6yrs ago and that was £800. I like jewellery too 🙈i bought myself a ring and bracelet that was 4k but thats it now as i dont like to have lots of jewellery to switch up these are worn and never taken off.

Most expensive personal item: my eyesight! My glasses were £750 (!). Not particularly through choice ( decent varifocals plus a nice frame). Add in about another £400 per year for contact lenses. Also I bought a painting for £400. If I can I would happily spend £300 on a coat. Also I think spending thousands on jewellery can be sensible if you have the savings. Gold and precious stones generally hold their value. Im thinking about buying a beautiful ring for myself with savings as I'd rather look at £2k glittering on my finger then numbers in a savings account! For info I earn £50k, 2 kids, main earner. Need to make my n money go far ...😀

My biggest spend so far is Lego.... I'm 55 🤣🤣🤣 my most recent set cost £84 eeek. .... just not used to spending money on myself without feeling guilty 🤔

My god I don't earn a quarter of what you do OP and we have DC. I can't even buy a cup of tea out so I can't really contribute to this thread, other than to say bloody well done! £50k wow

I’m guessing you haven’t been on MN long, somehow pretty much everyone (bar you and I it seems) is earning 6 figure salaries. To be fair to OP, it is a decent salary but standard wage for most professionals.

Me, DH and DS who is 18mo are all so ecstatically happy to be away from there for sure😃 he was 4mo when we got this place. So glad he won't remember it 😁

You post is far more impressive than anyone on here spending 4-5 figures on coats, bags and guitars! Enjoy every second of your new family home 🏠

Devilsmommy · 13/04/2024 22:51

@FlipFlop1987 thanks for that. Spending that kind of money on bags and coats will never be in my ballpark but I'm very happy with what I've got 😊

My DH and I live a pretty frugal life, we can admire nice things from afar but we never treat ourselves. For context we are middle earners, combined income of £80k. Have a large house that we have worked hard for and so far still have a low(ish) monthly mortgage repayment. We moved house 3 times in 10 years making good profit on new builds. If we say where we live, people roll their eyes as if we earn a fortune.
We both drive very normal family cars, both 7 years old. Neither of us has spent more than £100 on any one clothing item, bar my wedding dress (£350 down from £1700)
We don’t wear watches, the only jewellery item I have is my engagement ring which was £3.5k which I was blown away by as it’s not like my DH to spend that. At least it’s a part investment.
I have no hobbies, DH has had many before we met so has loads of sports stuff and bikes that were probably costly when he lived his bachelor lifestyle but worth very little now. The only one thing that he insures still is a guitar as it’s a limited edition one, bought for about £800 many years ago, it’s not quite worth 5 figures but still a reasonable amount as it’s increased over time.
We don’t even have meals out often, just special occasions. We must sound like such boring people but we like to have a good savings buffer and then spend it wisely. For instance for all the things we haven’t bought ourselves since we moved 2 years ago, we’ve managed to save enough to look at putting an extension on the house. I love my home and we spend a lot of time here (both WFH) so it’s for enjoyment and an investment.
Do I look at some people spending money on hair, nails, shoes and bags and feel a bit envious they have enough spare cash to do that, sometimes a little bit but then the biggest part of me thinks…Imagine what that money could have been invested in…

And that’s the secret to life!

Years ago I saved up (forever) and bought a necklace I had been coveting for £7k. I didn't earn a lot at the time and I'm not very materialistic, but I had to have this necklace. Every single time I wear it someone asks me where I got it.

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 17/04/2024 14:18

My dsis was horrified how much my (beautiful) leather handbag was but she has a Pandora charm bracelet with lots of charms on it & wears Pandora rings. Imo they are all over priced but each to their own 🤷🏻

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 17/04/2024 14:29

Forgot our car. Came into a bit of money so spent 20k on a car, still horrifies me 2 years later. When dfil died dh treated himself to a £600 watch to remember him by.

£390 on my wedding dress and alterations. It's crazy really when you think about how I only wore it for one day.

I would pay upwards of £1000 for the right piece of art. Most recently purchased a print by Gottfried Helnwein for over £900 to add to my modest collection of artworks.

Are you glad you spent that? If you felt brilliant in your dress, that counts for a lot. There are worse things to spend 3k on.Grin
