How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

My god I don't earn a quarter of what you do OP and we have DC. I can't even buy a cup of tea out so I can't really contribute to this thread, other than to say bloody well done! £50k wow

Sorry 😔 I wasn't gloating. It's taken me 20 years to get to here. It doesn't go very far in London!

I really like hotels so will happily spend £2k+ for a two- night break.

People are horrified and trot out the “you could have two weeks in Benidorm for that” line, without a hint of irony.

Oh god, anything over two weeks in Benidorm 😆

I think my iPhone and MacBook were both over 1k each. My most expensive personal items are usually tech related.

Ooh actually I’ve just remembered I bought a pair of Jimmy Choos for £500 about 12 years ago. Only worn them once. Must remember to put them on Vinted.

Ooh, post a picture... someone here might like them!

£500 for a leather backpack but tbh my dh bought it for me and he was earning 65k at that time and we have a £1k mortgage. probably wouldn't do it again, i find as i am in my 30s, i don't really mind what i wear or carry though i do like my nice makeup from spacenk and sephora (though not everything in my makeup bag is expensive).

we spend a lot more on holidays. we spend over 10k per year on flights and holidays. but usually works out to a big holiday and 6 or so weekend breaks.

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 11:14

Oh of course I've had holidays. I meant clothes, shoes, jewellery. I realise now I must be very cheap 🙈

that was clear

but i was wondering what you do spend your money and how much you spend on holidays etc?

Living in London, I imagine a massive portion goes on housing costs!

If we're talking wardrobe related then I've been known to spend a few hundred on bags. I buy mid range though, not super expensive designer. I think there's a point at which paying more doesn't give you any better quality and I'm not happy to pay for labels.

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 11:28

@brocollilover I spend on the usual stuff. I don't skimp on groceries or wine!
But I meant how much I'd spend per singe item of clothing, shoes etc.
I go to the states often as my family live there so of course that costs more than £200!
Other posters saying 400 on a coat or 1k on a bike I'd just never do. But I can see why they would. It's just personal choice.

i spent £500 on my wedding dress and £500 on my wedding ring, that's the most I've ever spent on a physical item. What's the point in expensive stuff, you can't take it with you when you go.

can't take cheap stuff with you either!!

I do spend on gold jewellery as that holds its value and can be enjoyed meantime. most I've spent is just over 5k in one go.

Used to spend on lovely evening wear years ago for special occasions, but now recycle all my outfits. so they have been very worthwhile cost per wear.

I love coats and jackets, so do spend on that, mostly second hand. would spend upto 200 if I really liked something and it was a classic item. Otherwise its primark, and other high st stores all the way, but prefer charity shops and ebay/vinted.

I was too stingy to buy a Gorgeous blue cut out dress from me+em in a print pattern, and now it's gone and when it pops up on ebay etc, the bidding goes mad and i miss out. Still grieve that

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 11:41

@brocollilover @Youdontevengohere yes indeed I do live in London. Hence my meagre spending!
Needs must as that's where the work is.

I don’t think the poster would think you were gloating. This is Mn where half the people seem to earn 100K 😂 50K is very reasonable in todays Britain especially London.

And I assume if someone with DC doesn’t earn a quarter of 50K they are receiving some level of top up benefits, which as a single no kids full-time working individual you wouldn’t receive.

TheFlis · 08/04/2024 11:53

I’ve just spend over £2k on an oven. I love it so much though and has been putting up with a terrible, unreliable one since we moved into our house which has been a nightmare as I am a keen cook.

Clothing wise my wedding dress was £2k but my parents paid for that and my DH paid £3k for my engagement ring. I think the most money I have ever paid out personally is £350 on Dubarry boots. I have had them for 7 years though and they are worn all the time to walk the dog so cost per wear would be tiny.

Shinyandnew1 · 08/04/2024 11:57

A few thousand for my engagement and eternity rings. They are both beautiful and I love them immensely!

Our bed was quite expensive, as was the boiler, the windows and loft conversion but those are more house things, I guess.

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 11:59

@Wildgeen thank you for pointing this out.
It's true. I wouldn't be entitled to any benefits of that sort.

£600 on a robot vacumn (worth every single penny)
1Kish on a rowing machine (also worth every penny)
We spend a lot of money on holidays and travel rather than expensive clothes/bags etc

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/04/2024 12:02

Single items I have spent over £500 on:

  • Oven
  • Washing machine
  • Mulberry handbag
  • Bike
  • laptop
  • Bed
Ginmonkeyagain · 08/04/2024 12:03

Not sure whether to add carpet on that list as well as the price included fitting it.

Happyinarcon · 08/04/2024 12:06

I don’t take care of my things very well so if I do buy a luxury item I stick to second hand. I’m not the kind of person to put a handbag back in a dust cover or to lock jewellery in a safe so that stops me from over investing.

SanskritPixie · 08/04/2024 12:13

I earn about 100k a year. Other than the car, the most I’ve spent on a single item is probably on tech - laptops and phones. I need them for work. We spend a lot on holidays, but with four teenage children, that’s always expensive, and we tend to self-cater to keep the costs down.

The most I’ve spent on a physical object was £500 on a running machine.

50k for a car

A few bags for around 2.5k each

Dental implants 2 at just over 2k each

A massive bed 3.5k and the same for garden table and chairs.

Holidays which obviously aren’t things-a crazy amount.
