How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

Interesting post OP. I saw this post at the weekend on the MoneySavingExpert Facebook page:

"Want to cut down on unnecessary spending?

If you're tempted by an impulse buy, work out how many hours it would take you to earn that money. It might make you think twice.

For instance, if you get paid £10 an hour and it costs £150, that's an extra 15 hours you'll need to work to fund it, before you even consider tax!"

But in my case, I also don't spend very much and have to really justify it to buy eg a new phone. I did buy a new iPad last week (on offer in John Lewis and used some vouchers I had as a recent work leaving gift) and realised that actually the number of hours it would take me to earn the price was absolutely worth it.

Perhaps you could think of it like that - but as an encouragement to give yourself a treat every so often?

Youdontevengohere · 08/04/2024 16:21

I’d happily spend money on something expensive if I really really wanted it, but there isn’t anything I can think of that I’d want!

Ilovemyshed · 08/04/2024 16:27

Depends if its something I need. Similar level income and I spent £1200 on a laptop, £250 on garden furniture and £300 on a lawnmower.

I think really hard about clothes, make up/ perfume and non essential stuff though.

PToosher · 08/04/2024 16:27

I earn nearly £50k. I spent £2k on a guitar a couple of years ago. I've spent up to £1500 on musical instruments on several occasions.

GrandColombier · 08/04/2024 16:29

Excluding car and holidays.

My bike at about £9,000. But thinking of the no of hours on it and all the fun it's given, absolutely no regrets.

FiveTreeHill · 08/04/2024 16:29

What about furniture, electronics, appliances? All things Ive spend more than a few hundred on.

It depends what we're talking about. A coat I might spend a few hundred on or a good pair of boots. But I wouldnt spend that on a Tshirt. I try and less but better quality items. I don't own much jewellry bar my engagement/wedding rings

Xenia · 08/04/2024 16:31

Spent 5 sets of school and university fees for starters which will have cost a lot.... Even full time childcare costs in 1984 took half of each of our net salaries. I have bought horses which are fairly expensive although not particularly expensive ones of those. I don't have any jewellery.
I have some furniture which cost quite a bit but if a burglar came into this house he would be very disappointed!

Ratfinkstinkypink · 08/04/2024 16:39

My most expensive spend has been £3k on a buggy for my little boy.

nc22124 · 08/04/2024 16:41

Wedding dress, without a doubt. £2,000 plus alterations and I wore it once.

The other thing that springs to mind is my fruit bowl, although it was only £70 I think that's a lot to spend on a fruit bowl. It's solid marble, can hardly move the bloody thing 😂

Op this conversation is pointless without context.

How many savings do you have?
What's your pension?

Do you own property?

Do you want to have dc in future?

If family live abroad I think you will be spending a lot of money in flights etc.

I think 200 mark for you treating yourself on your salary sounds about right but if you have nothing savings and spend time on other stuff then it's too much!

If you have 100s thou in bank it's probably not much.

Karatema · 08/04/2024 16:48

I have a ring, which I bought myself on a whim, that I still love 10 years later that cost £250. My DH has bought me rings ranging between £90 and £2000 but we've been married 40 years and I am bought one once in a blue moon! 😀

i don’t think the op was posting with much of a “point”

it was a chat thread, which doesn’t need to have a “point”! not on mumsnet and not in RL

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 08/04/2024 16:51

I paid just under £2000 for my wedding shoes, they cost more than my rings did. Other than that I live a very modest life and don’t really own anything valuable

SunshinyDay1 · 08/04/2024 16:52

@brocollilover

My comment wasn't meant to be a testy.. This is not what mumsnet is for thanks.

I'm commenting that without context it means little and then I explain why?

Vermin · 08/04/2024 16:54

@CommeIlFaut did he buy one of the Knopfler guitars at Christie’s?!!

OP - I suspect that the vast majority of £30k rings are never “bought”, they are inherited from parents or grandparents who paid hundreds or low thousands for them decades ago

My friend used to work in the Chanel shop. She had a women ask whether she preferred the lime green or neon orange underpants. They were sheer, nylon with with some lacy bits around the edges and uncomfortable looking elastic on the legs and waist band- £800 a pair!

My friend thought they were hideous, but smiled and said 'Well they are both lovely aren't they?'. The woman bought 2 of each colour! 😧

And then she got to the till and realised they weren't £8.00 each!

Rocknrollstar · 08/04/2024 17:01

I spent £300 on an outfit but I knew I would be wearing it for 3 weddings. I paid more for my mother’s outfit for my son’s wedding. I have a few pieces of expensive jewellery but they were gifts.generally I love to shop but don’t sp be a lot on a single item

Blackcats7 · 08/04/2024 14:00

My first highland pony £3,500. Worth every penny. And I am a poor retired nurse but he was the medicine I needed.

Oh my gosh, I'd definitely spend my income on a horse if I had the time! I adore horses and riding. I rode for years but just don't have the time now sadly. That's definitely a worthy cost ❤️

House stuff - 1k on dining table and chairs, first new ones we had had in 20 years of marriage and were paid for with an inheritance. Similar price for a sofa bed, again first new one we had and paid for with inheritance again. £600 plus on glasses (spectacles not for drinking out of) but I'm blind as a bat and need the ultra thinned and varifocal lenses so the cost is in the lenses, no designer frames for me.
Frivolous purchase - replacement engagement ring after the original secondhand one was too thin to repair and replace the stone... Approx £1200. Felt incredibly profligate, but we could afford it, I love it, and frankly we could have spent a lot more!

mermaidin · 08/04/2024 17:08

CommeIlFaut · 08/04/2024 14:27

DH just spent 68k on a guitar.

He insists it’s an investment but that only works if he’d ever sell it, which I know he won’t.

When I look at what other middle aged guys spaff on cars that depreciate the minute they leave the forecourt, I can’t get worked up about it. Guitars make him very, very happy.

I can't get my head around 68k on a guitar 😳!
No judgment l, just flabbergasted 😮!
But if he loves it and it makes him happy then brilliant!

surely op you’ve spent more than £200 on something electronic? phone? computing? TV?

Oh yes. I was talking about clothing, footwear or jewellery. I wish I could get away with spending less than £200 for furniture or gadgets!
