I've just bought myself a coverless duvet!!

I've had my eye on these for a while, and found it on Vinted, a king size one. It's only 10.5 tog, so I'm hoping it's going to be warm enough (I'm in Scotland).
I feel very excited at the thought of potentially not having to change my duvet covers again.
And it fits in the machine for washing!
Please share my excitement. I don't even care that my chat is so sad Grin

That's what I don't understand. Isn't it cheaper and more convenient to wash the cover?

No. To wash the cover, you have to undo it and remove the duvet. The duvet takes less time in the dryer than covers do.

JMSA · 04/04/2024 16:55

It is more convenient for me to wash the whole thing, as I strongly dislike changing duvet covers.

Which is indeed the whole point.

No spare? What happens when you spill your bedtime cocoa all over it?

That would be so much more hassle with a normal duvet, as presumably the cocoa would leak through the cover!

Agree! I have arthritis and sciatica. Changing the covers can be really painful for me.

Ok. I know you have to undo and take off the duvet cover. I do that every week. It's just surprising that the duvet would take less time in the tumble dryer than a cover, but if you say so.

It’s made of really light polyester. To be fair, the double one dries in 3 hours over the banister. I only use the dryer for the super king.

Right. That's quick drying! If it's polyester do you find you get a bit sweaty?

No, it’s super light and almost silky.

Thank you 😊.
Also thanks for taking time to answer so nicely 🌻

@Corinthiana

Hmm, good question. I can only base this on my daughter's opinion, as she has the single version of mine on her bed.
She says it's like sleeping with a cloud!

I didnt love the texture of mine, I prefer natural fabrics next to my skin

Do any of the coverless duvet lovers here have a summer weight one and can tell me if it’s good for those of us who get easily overheated at night? I struggle to get comfy and fall asleep with no cover at all except
in a heatwave but hate the feel of just a sheet, and so I just end up in a cycle of duvet on, get hot, throw duvet off, get cold and repeat all night. Am wondering if this - essentially a thick blanket I guess - will help.

TheChosenTwo · 04/04/2024 17:06

I just don’t think they look very nice!
They look like a bare duvet without a cover. My bedroom is my sanctuary, I love it and have nice bedding. I don’t want to have to put blankets etc on top of it so it looks nice, it’s just more stuff to fold/tidy in the morning.
Takes 10 minutes to strip and remake my king sized bed, takes dh 15 - either way once a week we can spare it. Neither of us have mobility issues. I can understand if you do then these could be helpful.

I think someone upthread has a 4 tog one - that wouldn't get too hot.

Fine Bedding Company have 10.5 or 4.5 tog.
I definitely couldn't have the lighter one, but it might suit you?

I have summer and winter versions. I also don’t like no covers on me but a sheet doesn’t quite cut it. I really like it for the summer and don’t find I throw it off and on.

QualityDog · 04/04/2024 17:11

You can simply put some sort of a cover on it so it looks nicer.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 04/04/2024 17:13

Thank you @PotatoPudding @JMSA I think i’ll invest when the weather starts to get warmer!

thesleepyhoglet · 04/04/2024 17:14

I'm not convinced - surely it's harder to wash a duvet than a duvet cover?

And let's not even get started on trying to dry it.

Gagagardener · 04/04/2024 17:16

@JMSA I"m pleased you stsrted this thread; DH and I were wondering about coverless duvets last time we changed the cover. (Think we'll probably stay as we are a bit longer now I've read it. But yes, I'd get excited, too.)

A word of warning: I could not give away perfectly clean old duvets. Charity shops wouldn't take them. Neither would vets or animal shelters; they use disposable paper bedding. Fortunately, I avoided landfill by putting them into 'energy from waste' at the tip - but not everywhere has that option. Because I live remote and rura,I didn't try urban rough sleeping charities, lf you know of any, it might be worth asking if they can use them.

Vettrianofan · 04/04/2024 17:16

TheThingIsYeah · 04/04/2024 13:47

But then you have to wash the whole duvet instead of just the covers? And whereas you could probably fit 2 or 3 covers into a single load, you can only do one load at time by washing the whole thing.

All that extra energy consumption from the washing machine and inevitable tumble dryer use to get it dry in time for the same evening. Greta won't be pleased.

I agree. What a disaster for the environment.

Nope! 3 hours over the banister and it’s
dry.
