I’ll start with Ryan Reynolds. He honestly seems completely down to earth, responsive to his fans and likes to have a good joke at his own expense

I LOVE Johnny. His glamping programmes were lovely, and he came across as a genuinely nice, kind man. Daft as a brush, but with a heart of gold.

Members of the public seem to have this thing that when they meet a celeb they want to make it more eventful than it actual is. This means lots of people exaggerate either how 'amazing, wonderful and down-to-earth' a celeb is or, alternatively, how 'horrible, stuck up and fake' they are. In reality I suspect most celebs are pretty normal. I imagine most aren't complete twats as people wouldn't want to work with them (although there are definitely exemptions to that!) As for giving to charity and doing charitable work then that's a fairly standard thing to do especially if you are well off and especially if you want to promote a good image of yourself.

This ☝️ I also think a fair few of them were the popular/bullies in school

I read in one of Derren Brown’s books that he once accidentally let a door close on someone instead of holding it open for them and it struck him that that would now be that person’s enduring opinion of him and they’d tell everyone about it - it him realise that every casual encounter with the public cemented their opinion of him for ever, so he couldn’t afford to get it wrong.

Apparently he spends a lot of time with fans after shows, and I’ve yet to hear anyone say anything bad about him (except maybe the person he didn’t hold the door open for!).

Yes, I read about that! Shock
They really only reconciled when he was a grown adult and parent.

I don't know these people but I'll be very upset if they turn out to be wrong 'uns.

Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall
Michaela Strachan
Jules Hudson
Nicky Chapman
George Clarke
Henry Cole

I used to work with George Clarke many years ago, he wasn't not nice but he was quite aloof if you get my drift, only stayed at our architects practice for a year before going off and setting up by himself.

Yousay55 · 04/04/2024 17:06

Paul McCartney
Richard Osman

SpeculatingRooks · 04/04/2024 17:07

@MarkWithaC @Cocolapew OK Rose is struck off the guest list sadly.

I'll let Siobhan off though for being funny

RogueFemale · 04/04/2024 17:07

Olivia Colman

Bollindger · 04/04/2024 17:08

Ian Botham was a real giggle.
His brother tried to trade on the do you know who I am, and Ian in front of a pub full of people said "Yes a freeloading twat!"
He paid for a taxi home for 4 younge farmers. They were drunk and he was worried about them.

Paul McCartney
Richard Osman

My aunt and uncle met Paul a few times many years ago and said he is really nice and down to earth.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2024 17:12

DB has worked with a few people and said these are lovely:

Damian Lewis
Guy Pearce
Bradley Walsh
Tinchy Stryder

There must be more but can't think of them now.

Friend of mine used to own a vintage clothes shop and Florence Welch used to buy dresses from her and friend said she's really lovely.

I've seen Richard Ayaode out and about and being turned away from a restaurant because they didn't have space (they didn't recognise him and I was frantically trying to tell them who he was) but he was utterly charming and lovely.

GlobalCitz · 04/04/2024 17:13

I worked with Metallica on a project and they were amazing (also, intelligent and engaging).

I wasn't especially into their music, but they totally won me over, as professionals and human beings.

dottiedodah · 04/04/2024 17:14

Tom Cruise always seems a nice guy. I read when Kirsten Dunst was little ,and did a film with him .he had a Christmas tree put up in her room for her .Also does all his own stunts and is a qualified pilot

Everythinggreen · 04/04/2024 17:14

Declan Donnelly was absolutely lovely back in the day too, around PJ and Duncan times... Ant not so much 🤣

@Churchview I think HFW has a few not so pleasant rumours surrounding him...!

I don't want to hear anything bad about Gillian Anderson, I LOVE her based on some recent characters she's played! I know that's very flawed logic though.

Used to think Mark Watson was excellent then found out about his very prolonged affair and lost respect for him.

Think Greg Davies would be genuinely fun to hang out with.

My aunt and uncle met Paul a few times many years ago and said he is really nice and down to earth.

Friend of mine went to school with his daughter, said she was nice but everyone knew who she was. Don't know if it was a case of "do you know who I am?" but think judging by the act I think it was Stella.

Hartley99 · 04/04/2024 17:16

Ricky Gervais and Brian Blessed. Both have got massive egos, but I suspect they’ve got good hearts as well. Both militantly against animal cruelty (which is always a good sign) and heavily involved in charity work. I also get the impression that Gervais really doesn’t take himself seriously at all.

Olivia Coleman has a warm and beautiful smile. Susie Dent seems lovely. I’d be gutted to meet Stephen Fry and dislike him. I always sensed that the writer Martin Amis was quite decent.

Let’s add Sharron Davies and Daley Thompson to that list as well please.

I know Elton John has been a foul mouthed junkie in the past , but he has managed to stay sober for a great many years, and his Foundation has raised millions and millions for AIDS research.

Yes... hopefully Dave Grohl, who's been mentioned a few times, has also done similar re AIDS, else he will always remain a twat to me.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 04/04/2024 17:17

I can't agree on Esther Rantzen - much as I used to absolutely love That's Life.

She knew what many at the BBC knew, but (like the rest, granted) said nothing - but then she went on to found a charity to protect children and receive a great deal of praise and publicity for what a wonderful, kind, caring, compassionate person she is for doing so. That raises several questions in my mind.

Wornoutlady · 04/04/2024 17:18

I heard a story about Ryan Reynolds being rude to someone at a restaurant. They were all outside looking at the menu and the stranger said "excuse me..." hoping to find out if RR had eaten there and recommended it (they didn't recognize him) and he snapped "Excuse you! We're trying to look at the menu here, no I won't give an autograph". Wanker, basically. Well curated is true.

RandomForest · 04/04/2024 17:18

No idea but Roy from the Coronation Street cafe seems nice. 😂

It's the shopping bag I think that does it.

How do we know, even close colleagues don't know someone, ask the wives is probably the best bet.

He seems nice, but he has written into all the contracts of performers on his films that they are "not to make eye contact" if they see him and "not to speak to him unless he speaks to them first"

which is tosser-ish in anyone's book

JKR, Stacey Solomon, Stacey Dooley, Fiona Bruce, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Cher.

Lol at Julia and Stacey. The others on your list are ok, though.
