I’ll start with Ryan Reynolds. He honestly seems completely down to earth, responsive to his fans and likes to have a good joke at his own expense

A family member worked with Esther Rantzen, she was vile. Loathed by a lot of people (ie those who've met her).

These threads always have posts about her so I don’t think she is very nice.

PassPassPass · 06/04/2024 11:10

I know quite a few people who’ve worked with Jamie’s Dornan and says he’s the nicest actor they’ve ever worked with.

You say exactly how she’s been transphobic and not only will we acknowledge it, but JKR will pay you!

They never can. JKR detractors say she's 'transphobic' because they're following the herd that tells them to, without any recourse to independent thinking whatsoever. In this mode of thinking, even her altruistic action of setting up a rape crisis centre for female victims only is branded 'transphobic'. Because, for sure, the only reason she invested large sums of money into such a venture was so she could 'exclude trans people'. With such a painful lack of critical reasoning you can almost hear the cogs whirring as they work to make that one stand up.

I'll willingly retract these observations once someone can give substantiated reasoning as to their constant smearing of the woman, together with quotations and full context. Ie. not one tweet: a proper summary of the full exchange in which it was posted.

As always, we'll be waiting for some time. I suspect that anyone giving serious attention to this question has likely gone conveniently silent when they were able to find no clear evidence of hateful behaviour.

Never yet have I seen the simple question: 'But what did she actually say?', cause such confusion, hamfisted efforts at unconvincing justification and rapid back-peddling.

It's pathetic.

I don't think anybody has mentioned Dave Gorman yet, have they? I can't imagine he'd have an ounce of nastiness or self-importance in him - my money would be on him being a great, genuine bloke.

Oh he is a lovely guy! Ended up chatting to him for some time, years ago at the Edinburgh festival.. really easy to talk to and a genuine guy.

also… Helen Lederer.. she was drunk but she was lovely also…

@Zatapeg @MsLuxLisbon I met Johnny Depp when I was 19, at Planet Hollywood. A member of his team sexually assaulted me and when I made a fuss Depp said "get her out" and then laughed as I was physically thrown down the steps at the front of the building. That man is a misogynistic cunt. I have told this story before and been called a liar by Depp super fans. Pro social relationships are very odd.

Dave Santan paid for mine and DH's dinner and drinks when his mates were all being very loud (but lovely and we had no issue with them at all) nearby when we had an anniversary dinner.

Sean Paul was very patient and kind and sweet to DD when she was totally starstuck in the airport. Took loads of photos and recorded her a voice mail etc. Lovely man, lovely family.

I believe you. Def from what was probably the 90’s. I’m sure he’s not ‘like that now’ but that is no excuse. I’m sure they’re both awful people actually. She def sounded it on those voice messages.

Maybe you can explain why I got attacked for saying she wasn't my hero. I didn't say anything bad about her, in fact I didn't say anything else about her. I don't know why that was and surely people are entitled to pick their own heroes.

I think rich people should pay for their. Children's education. Schools are too stretched

I'm not particularly a McCartney fan... but state schools are funded by the taxes that we all pay. Do you not think that Paul may just have already paid quite a significant amount more in taxes than you or I ever will?

If you check the message history you'll see I wasn't replying to you. It's of no interest who others' heroes are - incidentally, I'm no very great fan of Harry Potter - but a request that extreme, arguably defamatory comments be fully justified. The reply you quote takes specific issue with the point from another PP that J K Rowling is 'fuelling transphobia and hate'.

I was asking how. After all, if people are going to smear someone to this extent, it must surely be with some good reason? I'd be interested to hear what this is. In context.

PoppyCherryDog · 06/04/2024 11:41

Tom Hardy! He rescues dogs and does a lot for dog charities which as a mad dog person I love!

Taylor Swift
JKR
Liam Neeson

I always think Paul O Grady came across as a wonderful man. That said he was best friends with Cilla who was by all accounts, a horror. Makes me pause as I wonder what he was like on holiday on the Spanish holidays they took together over many years.

This is one that baffles me too. Paul was very widely reputed to be a truly lovely man. I loved Dale Winton, who also seemed to be a very genuine, gentle, kindly man with time for everybody.

Yet they were both Cilla's besties, including spending Christmas with her every year. Unfathomable!

It all just seems a bit hysterical about her. Other people on here have had good and bad things said about them and no one has got agitated like the JKR fans seem to. It just seems really odd to me that people can say they think someoneis good and someone else says she's a bitch/he's a sleaze or whatever and no attacking goes on but simply saying she isn't my hero gets an attack.

I know you weren't replying to me but I was replying to you and great you don't care who anyone's hero is but clearly it does cause a reaction on here and I wonder why. It starts to feel a bit like a cult.

I've never read Harry Potter, well any of the books so no opinion on them but I did enjoy Strike.

MaybeRevisitYourWipingT3chnique · 06/04/2024 11:51

The tedious suggestion that JKR is 'transphobic' is always made without any evidence, or even anybody's ability to plainly state what she is supposed to have said in this vein.

On the other hand, there is no question at all that she is passionate in fighting gynophobia - this can indeed be proven by many things that she has actually said and written and the causes that she stands up for.

Therefore, I wonder what that might say about somebody hurling unfounded accusations of transphobia at her, which they themselves cannot begin to substantiate?

BustyLaRoux · 06/04/2024 12:07

2mummies1baby · 06/04/2024 10:09

I think it's important to remember that, just because Amber Heard is an awful person, it doesn't mean Johnny Depp isn't also an awful person. I think they are both deeply fucked up, terrible people.

Yea exactly this.

You cannot know what " transphobia" is without knowing what GC is.

How dare you insinuate that I don't know what it is, and what's more, imply by the use of quotation marks, that it is not even real. I can only hope that you yourself have never had the awful experience of hate and discrimination targeted at yourself because of your gender, or race or anything else for that matter and that you are simply ignorant.

Given I haven't witnessed an attack on you, @Iwasafool, I can hardly be blamed for not knowing about it. I'm more than willing to own and reply to points taking issue with something I've said: you were replying to me about something I hadn't. I can't speak for others' comments.

My reaction - again I can't speak for those of others - is simply that I don't like to see people slandered without due cause. You'll note if you care to look that I've made similar points upthread about Esther Rantzen seemingly 'knowing' about the proclivities of Jimmy Savile. Yet again, this seems to boil down to making women responsible for men's behaviour. Not least, hearing rumours is not the same thing as 'knowledge' and you have to be very sure before reporting this serious an allegation.

Of course when I see this go on I'm going to challenge it. Particularly when that entails a woman being held accountable for the behaviour of men; a social pattern that repeats itself with tedious regularity.

Hope that clarifies.

LamonicBibber1 · 06/04/2024 12:10

Just glanced through the thread and seen a previous post about it, is it true that Steve Backshall is a prostitute using womaniser?! That's shit if it's true, I always presumed he was a straightforward decent person. Although I don't know how "truth" can be proved in any case, but still I'd never heard any rumours.

I bumped into Shappi on a night out once. Quite literally. She was blind drunk and barging around all over the place.

Saw a tweet from her recently about being newly sober so I guess she's had her struggles. I like her on stage.

Well I was accused of lying about her, fantasising about her, told I wasn't speaking for the people of Edinburgh. I never even mentioned Edinburgh. All I said was she wasn't my hero. Maybe you'd like to defend me from that slander? Don't you think there is an overreaction if people aren't worshiping her? It all seems very odd. I suspect that there are lots of people like me who don't care one way or the other about her and yes I'm sure I will be told I should care but the fact is I don't.

I was surprised, he seemed lovely when I met him but I guess lots of men who use prostitutes can be charming. I have searched to find out what he has been doing but I can't find anything. His wife, Helen Glover, speaks highly of him and they seem a very happy couple. Maybe allegations are from before their marriage?
