I’ll start with Ryan Reynolds. He honestly seems completely down to earth, responsive to his fans and likes to have a good joke at his own expense

JK Rowling.

People, people, it’s Mumsnet Ffs. And yet no one has yet mentioned the sainted Anthony Head. The place has gone to the dogs I tell you.

At least 3 or 4 people already have!

TheaBrandt · 05/04/2024 07:42

Used to chat with Emma Thompson regularly as she was local when I had a newborn. She would come over to our group and admire the babies. Very nice person.

Remember seeing hilarious footage of a young Penelope Cruz literally shoving another actress out of the way to get in shot so have my doubts about her!

Maxus · 05/04/2024 07:53

Robin Williams. He always looked after the children on set and looked after their rights speaking up when he needed to. He did this on the sets of jumanji and Mrs Doubtfire.

Agree with this. Someone I work with used to work at the BBC. ER refused to share a lift with anyone. So possibly not so nice.

I met her many times in a work capacity. She was someone that I didn’t want to make a mistake in front of, and everyone relaxed as soon as she’d gone. I didn’t get a sense that other staff around her were “at ease”. She was someone I wouldn’t say I liked, but she was amazing at events that included donors or volunteers, warm and welcoming. I also had great respect for her singlemindedness and determination that got ChildLine off the ground. From a current affairs segment of a That’s Life programme, which women responded to by sending letters about their own sexual abuse, many in their later years who’d carried that secret all their life, to the launch of an organisation that children could ring without being referred by an adult. I think it’s possible for people not to be nice but do huge amounts of good things. Maybe some as so driven by the end goal they haven’t the energy to be nice on the way. And yes, she absolutely should have used power to expose the BBC and JS, but then she wouldn’t have had that power. Not excusing her but the reality is people did expose JS - John Lydon for one in a radio interview that was cut and he didn’t work for BBC again, and without that position there wouldn’t have been Childline.

@Churchview I think HFW has a few not so pleasant rumours surrounding him...!

I don't want to hear anything bad about Gillian Anderson, I LOVE her based on some recent characters she's played! I know that's very flawed logic though.

Used to think Mark Watson was excellent then found out about his very prolonged affair and lost respect for him.

Think Greg Davies would be genuinely fun to hang out with.

Mmmm yep I’ve heard from two sources stuff about HFW being a bit 😬. Not stuff in the news. Nothing REALLY BAD, but still not great.

Tom & Giovanna Fletcher

DemBonesDemBones · 05/04/2024 08:52

@thesnailandthewhale have you met Giovanna?!

MsLuxLisbon · 05/04/2024 08:54

AssassinsEyebrow · 05/04/2024 05:54

Ryan Gosling, seems incredibly genuinune

Surprised at all the love for Johnny Depp, I think he exposed his true self during both trials with Amber Heard

Re Ryan Reynolds - call me a cynic but I'm wary of anyone who buys up so much power & influence in one locality. I'm sure he's charm personified to everyone there - he has to be, doesn't he?

As to the argument about animal rights & supporters of which being horrible - some people think that backing a worthy cause gives them right to be abusive & foul to anyone who disagrees with them.

Johnny Depp was defending himself from abuse. Amber Heard is and was an abuser, a grifter, and a liar. Men can be victims of abuse.

Suspect it's probably difficult to be famous without developing at least something of an ego. Doesn't make them bad people, necessarily.

But it isn't necessary and when there are big names that don't have an ego there's no excuse.

What did she think of Will Sharpe? He comes over as nice.

She confirms he is also lovely, as is Sophia Di Martino

DemBonesDemBones · 05/04/2024 09:00

@thesnailandthewhale very, very important to remember they met at stage school. She's a really good actress.

That's Q-Anon garbage.

The others are kind of obvious though he’s the only one I didn’t get that vibe from.

What vibe? As I say, it is nonsense. Like Pizzagate. There is no basis of truth in these allegations whatsoever.

I find drag acts incredibly offensive... it's literally men taking the piss out of women.
It should be seen as outdated and offensive as Black Face (sorry, that term is horrid in itself... but so is 'Drag Queen')...

I understand and agree with this point in a lot of cases but think there is a world of difference between Lily Savage's character and some of the tossers nowadays talking about being 'fishy' etc. I think Lily was politically motivated and based on, I believe, a mix of much loved family and real downtrodden but still fighting individuals whereas most of Ru Paul's contestants that I've seen (I don't watch it, was interested in the concept early doors but it got old very fast partly for the reasons you say) are about broad, not particularly clever hypersexual generalisations and individual navel gazing. I think the difference may be respect and resentment for women.

Kevin spacey for example. I agree the pizza stuff is weird but I’d heard generally he was a bit dodgy. Happy to hear otherwise!

There is no truth whatsoever in the allegations against Tom Hanks, that is QAnon rubbish. Kevin Spacey is another story, he is definitely a predator at best, a paedophile at worst.

faffadoodledo · 05/04/2024 11:09

I'd hate to hear that Gary Lineaker wasn't nice. My DH was on the same flight as him decades ago when Gary was playing in Barcelona and returning to London. DH is a seasoned traveller (for work) and not phased by a spot of turbulence, but said it was the single most terrifying flight of his life. All the passengers thought they were going to die. So he shared a near death experience with Gary!
Upthread someone mentioned Martin Amis. Hmmm... maybe I caught him on a bad evening. But he was the vainest, haughtiest person I've ever met!

Holly Willoughby
Mariah Carey
Philip Schofield

I love Ryan Reynolds and his colleague Rob on Wrexham. I think both seem great guys and seem to being doing alot for Wrexham community.

AhBiscuits · 05/04/2024 11:51

Joaquine Phoenix.
He's always so lovely to me in all the fantasies I have about him.

Dolly Parton, King Charles, The Pope, David Attenborough, The Dalai Lama, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Ash Barty, J. K. Rowling, Kamahl, Kylie Minogue, Dame Quentin Bryce, Susan Boyle, Michael D. Higgins, Ukraine President Zelensky, many older British women actors.

Edited

The Dalai Lama was in the news for highly inappropriate behaviour with a young boy in public. Maybe just a one-off; maybe a common occurrence?

As to the argument about animal rights & supporters of which being horrible - some people think that backing a worthy cause gives them right to be abusive & foul to anyone who disagrees with them.

You're bang on about abusive people using their charitable deeds to try to 'justify' and 'balance out' their appalling behaviours - as well as a smoke screen, to make people think that such a benevolent person couldn't possibly be bad in other ways.

Jimmy Savile raised an enormous amount of money for charity.

Interestingly, I read that Savile was constantly angling to get involved with Children In Need on the BBC, but the man in charge of the BBC's CIN programming staunchly and repeatedly refused to let him anywhere near it.

Esther Rantzen is often cited as possibly knowing what went on with JS and people questioned why she didn’t say anything if she knew. I think that even if she did know, and even though she was a top presenter, the fact that she was female and/or he was being protected/so powerful , meant that she was powerless.

Maybe Childline was her direct response to this if that was the case, and good on her if so.
