I’ll start with Ryan Reynolds. He honestly seems completely down to earth, responsive to his fans and likes to have a good joke at his own expense

I like to think Graham Norton is genuinely nice. He comes across so well in both his show and books.

You've forgotten his earlier shows then.

Those websites maintained by cabin crew are an interesting insight into the famous people who habitually treat others well, and those who don't. Very often the same names appeared on the shit list and the good one, and some names periodically appeared on both.

'Niceness' is an extremely subjective personal assessment. It doesn't necessarily pay, nor does it always garner respect. No one's 'nice' all the time. It's possible to get a sense of which stage and screen personalities might be among the genuinely good, but every single human being is flawed, has 'off' days, and projects only the image of ourselves that we want others to see.

I respect altruism, kindness where it's due, wit, intelligence and good company. I also respect the fact that everyone's human, and sometimes we all fuck up.

She may not be 'nice' but she is kind. And a hero to women.

Not all women. You don't speak for me.

I think that beach thing is fair enough who wants gawpers hanging around

It's not all about what she wants is it? To take a public beach out of public use is awful.

IlkaDoxie · 04/04/2024 20:16

Robert Smith
Tracey Thorn

I always think Ed Balls seems absolutely lovely, but I'm basing that on nothing more than his TV persona and his kind face.

I randomly bumped into him on Cromer Pier around the time he was trying to ban home education and I so wanted to heckle him and mob him with my feral band of home-educated kids 😂but something about his kind face (as well as general embarrassment) disarmed me! No idea what he's really like though.

Other politicians: me and my dad had lunch once with Lord Cashman in the BBC canteen and he was so lovely, although he did gently poke fun at my autograph book which had "Autographs of the Rich and Famous" embossed in gold on the cover - apparently Eastenders didn't really pay well enough for the "rich" part to apply to its stars! He was so kind though, to spend so long chatting to people who were basically nobodies, and me all of 8 years old at the time. Also, David Gauke is extremely funny and charming, and Alex Chalk was a nice friendly guy at university. I didn't realise he was a cabinet minister now until he popped up in the Guardian a few months ago. I'm glad some of the posh boys I knew of back then didn't go into public life, is all I'm saying...

100%

it isn't all about the 'smiles and the drinks at the bar', there are many dimensions that make a human being admirable.

Iwasafool · 04/04/2024 20:20

I know Robin Williams has been mentioned more than once so I thought I'd just say there is a programme on BBC2 about him at 9 pm. Robin Williams, A Life in 10 photographs I think it's called.

JohnSt1 · 04/04/2024 20:21

I'm going to get flamed for this but...

Bono.

According to people who have worked with him, he seems to be very down-to-earth in person, very funny, very kind.

Tygertiger · 04/04/2024 20:22

DH is a musician and has worked with a lot of celebs. His favourite is Bill Bailey, who he toured with - he said he was just as lovely and kind IRL as he is on the telly. He also said Paul McCartney was funny, warm and very patient with star-struck fans.

On the other hand, he has no time at all for Anton du Beke who he found really rude.

ElizaMulvil · 04/04/2024 20:23

Bridget Bardot awful, racist, had many fines for same.

Curlyblondefemale · 04/04/2024 20:24

Chris Packham and George Micheal.

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 20:30

I think I'm too cynical for this thread Grin]. Have heard odd rumours about a few named and don't believe anything pumped out by a publicist, do people not understand persona's and pr?

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 20:32

I do like all of the Sheldrakes though (obscure)

Ryan Reynolds unsettles me

itsjustbiology · 04/04/2024 20:34

Lovely Rhod Gilbert
Andy McNaab I met. Stunning blue eyes twinkling away came across as a decent chap

ElsieMc · 04/04/2024 20:38

Upthread comment about the Clash and only 3 out of 4 being pleasant - who was number 4??

Morethanthis71 · 04/04/2024 20:38

Has anyone said Marilyn Monroe yet? She had such a sweet, kind innocence about her. Everyone who has ever said anything about her has only had the utmost praise.

Morethanthis71 · 04/04/2024 20:41

HÆLTHEPAIN · 04/04/2024 19:27

Oh, yes! I’d forgotten about that. It really is sad. I was so upset when he died. I know some people think that’s melodramatic because I didn’t know him but I’d grown up with his music being my absolute favourite. I can always picture different parts of my life with different songs.

He seemed like such a laugh as well..often taking the mickey out of himself.

Not melodramatic at all, I know exactly what you mean. I took flowers to his house in Berkshire and my children were astounded at the thousands upon thousands of tributes that had been left. It taught them the impact that someone and/or their music can have on your life without you ever meeting them.

Johnny Vegas
Alistair Appleton
Kathy Burke
Adam Hills
Brian May
Claudia Winkleman
Paul Weller
All strike me as being lovely Johnny Vegas I want to marry!

@itsjustbiology I met Adam Hills and can confirm he is swooningly lovely. He did a stand up preview gig in a pub near me, he was really funny, warm and engaging and happy to chat with everyone afterwards. I told him I thought he was amazing and I TOUCHED HIS ARM!!
I used to have a crush on him, now totally in love 😻

Glad to hear Bill Bailey is lovely. DS and I love him when he’s on QI “ Bailey, put your wine away and shut the fuck up “ !!
Hoping Rhod Gilbert is as lovely as he seems too. Love him as a comedian. I know he’s meant to be very shy IRL, watched the programme he did a few years ago about shyness and sounds like his has been absolutely crippling in the past.

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 20:42

I still remember the comment about Hugh Fearnly Whittingstall or whatever his name is and have spread that rumour quite a lot Grin] ahh when mumsnet was good.

MeKoh · 04/04/2024 20:44

Celine Dion is an absolute sweetheart despite her megastar status. We went to see her in Vegas during her residency in the early 2000s and everyone we spoke to at the hotel would tell us how down to earth she was and how she'd wander around just chatting to people.

I got to experience it for myself when she instructed her driver to pull over so she could say hello after she saw that I had waited to meet her. She was unbelievably lovely and genuine.

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 20:44

There was a good one about Sean Hughes too RIP

Ostagazuzulum · 04/04/2024 20:44

Jk Rowling and Ricky gervais
