I’ll start with Ryan Reynolds. He honestly seems completely down to earth, responsive to his fans and likes to have a good joke at his own expense

I disagree with her on that, but I don't think it means she's not a lovely person. You are free to disagree!

I met her. She was horrible actually. I’m not all surprised that she’s betrayed women’s rights.

anonymous98 · 04/04/2024 18:56

Suspect it's probably difficult to be famous without developing at least something of an ego. Doesn't make them bad people, necessarily.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2024 18:57

Don't know if this counts but a few years ago Prince was playing a private secret concert in Electric Ballroom, Camden a few years ago, me and 2 mega fans of his went there, he arranged for us all to be bought hot drinks (chocolate) as we queued outside and signed autographs.

She was apparently an absolute horror!!

I'd heard that, too - an absolute monster

I have a friend that worked with Paul O'Grady who confirmed he is indeed lovely.
Mark Ruffalo I think is great.

P O'G - Apart from the act he had in his early career in which he totally took the piss out of women. I don't think he ever apologised or explained his mysogynistic past persona

NoBunnyHome · 04/04/2024 19:00

I'll just leave this here in support of my nomination for Keanu....

Keanu Reeves, Dolly Parton, Tom Hanks, Stacey Dooley, Louis Theroux, Dwayne Johnson all give me good vibes!

George Michael.
Doris Day
Julie Andrews
Ben Shepherd

I don't know who Ben Shepherd is, but the first three entries on your list are precisely the names I was coming here to type.

Doris Day seemed such a warm, charismatic and likeable woman who never disappeared under her own cloud of stardom and did lifelong work for the protection of animals.

Diana Rigg is another who exuded warmth, for all her fierce intelligence and reputation for not suffering fools gladly. She and Andrews were cast in the same mould: both incredibly charismatic performers who were always really gracious and seemed to connect with people.

I've never heard a bad word said about Keanu Reeves or Dolly Parton: both seem very kind, altruistic people.

I really like Anthony Hopkins. Those who've worked with him are often on record saying he's one of the nicest people they've ever met. To listen to him interviewed, he's highly intelligent and cerebral, has a rapier wit and is also modest, honest about his demons and never seems to have fallen for his own hype. Seems a lovely gent - and oh, that voice!

ColleenDonaghy · 04/04/2024 19:01

Several of the names already on this thread but I'll add a few new ones that I would be disappointed to hear about being awful:

Amy Poehler
Seth Meyers
Stephen Colbert
John Oliver
Dara O Briain
Ed Byrne

ScruffMuffin · 04/04/2024 19:03

Oh, and Sean Lock.

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 04/04/2024 19:03

Another vote for Tony Head. I love him. He’s lovely. Based on personal experience at conventions, as well as experience in connection with his wife’s horse related business.

Lisa Goodwin Allen is a friend of a friend and ever so nice.

WavingCatsandDogs · 04/04/2024 18:36

Cilla Black - charming, humble lady

Yes, the woman who made an absolute meal of being Liverpudlian when it suited her yet advertised S*n Bingo. Absolute fucking hypocrite.

So proving the point made up thread that not all people who are pro animal rights are actually nice people.

Perhaps she was just disgusted with the way animals are so badly abused in ME countries.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/04/2024 19:05

Roy Orbison was apparently one of the nicest, kindest, most genuine people in the music industry. So sad that he had such a tragic life.

Cabincrew1 · 04/04/2024 17:26

I like Caroline Quentin felt so sorry for her when the model Caprice publicly used her as an example of an unattractive woman, she’s far from it.

I used to like her until she licked her partner's face during a dance on Strictly.

It was disgusting!

chillicalypso · 04/04/2024 19:11

Morgan freeman, High Jackman and Beyoncé as well.
Robin Williams always seemed great as well.

MarkWithaC · 04/04/2024 16:57

I slightly know Pinball Geoff (friend of a friend) and he's a delight and a hoot.

Dolly Parton should be president/prime minister/God. Giving all those books to millions of kids, employing her family at DollyWood... she's a genuine good one IMO.
Also Joan Bakewell, surely? And Dave Grohl seems to attract nothing but praise and respect.
Mark Rylance, I imagine. Joanna Lumley?
Andy Murray, that rare thing, an outspoken male feminist.

Siobhán McSweeney would be a scream in the pub, I think, but unfortunately is a sad-face will no one think of the transwomen type on social media.
And I used to follow Rose from the Throwdown on SM, but stopped because he said horrible misogynistic things and boasted about how he'd piss on the steps of Downing St (what steps?) if he wasn't allowed to use a women's loo.
I imagine Throwdown Keith being a lovely person though.

He abused me roundly on Twitter because I said that while everyone had a right to live in a way that made them feel comfortable in themselves, as long as it didn't damage other people, it wasn't possible for anyone to actually change sex.

He was pretty nasty.

Ian Botham was a real giggle.
His brother tried to trade on the do you know who I am, and Ian in front of a pub full of people said "Yes a freeloading twat!"
He paid for a taxi home for 4 younge farmers. They were drunk and he was worried about them.

I had one of his trainers on my desk for some weeks. It wasn't smelly but looked well worn.

I'd heard that, too - an absolute monster

So you've met her have you?

How dismissive. And dehumanising about someone you don't even know.

Esther has spent her lifetime campaigning for people's consumer rights, rights for the lonely and elderly, children and now for proper legislation to enable assisted dying.

its depressing that the perception of a persons worth and "niceness" is heavily skewed by the superficiality borne out of social media instead of looking at their actual lifelong contributions to humankind. That to me is what makes a wonderful person. I would love to meet her before she dies, she's unique, not least of all having to battle misogyny and the patriarchy of the BBC back in the 70s. Enough to knock the edges off anyone!

I read something yesterday about Ryan Reynolds image curation and how carefully managed it is.

a lot of these celebs do a deal with the media - give them certain access on the understanding the press won’t mention the negative stories

Ryan Reynolds is a regular visitor to my home town (lucky us!)and nobody has a bad word to say about him. He spends time with people, especially disabled children, is a generous supporter of local charities and really down to earth, along with his business partner, Rob McElhenney. They are learning Welsh too!

TheyreStillGoingWithThemPlumsKerr · 04/04/2024 19:17

I’m always surprised to read that Stacey Solomon isn’t particularly nice.
I knew someone who worked for a large children’s charity. They said when the charity organised a music concert to raise funds, Stacey was the only act involved who didn’t ask for/accept payment for it. Assumed from that she must be a good egg!

I met Anita Dobson once through work - off-the-scale lovely!

ScruffMuffin · 04/04/2024 19:03

Oh, and Sean Lock.

Oh, yes - and the late Jeremy Hardy always struck me as being very genuine and kind, too.

Because all Muslims come from the ME.

nicesurprise12 · 04/04/2024 19:18

JKR is not nice - many in Edinburgh who have met her before her rise to such levels of fame know that.

Ricky Gervais is absolutely not nice. He’s similar to Jimmy Care - both rude wankers
