This is showing my age a bit but for some reason Rod Jane and Freddy came into my mind this morning and I was wondering who else remembers them?!

Picture box could be very strange at times.

Elebag · 07/04/2024 14:07

I can't remember Button Moon being creepy, but some things seem to have amalgamated into one for me. I'm thinking now about Let's Pretend, which has led me to remembering Willo the Wisp and Dr Snuggles.

All of these things were out when I was about 11 or 12, so actually too old for them, but we watched them in an 'ironic' way when either home for lunch or after school.

Thinking about it, my DD does the same now. Sometimes re watching the stuff she watched in her younger years.

I had a doll called Hamble who was named after the doll in Play School. I thunk I also ended up with a rag doll called Jemima.

Has anyone mentioned Bod or Finger Bob's, yet?

Did Let's Pretend have a curtain and a caterpillar? I'm certain I remember watching it but I was very young

On this trip down memory lane does anyone remember Button Moon? I loved it when I was a child! Mr Spoon, Tina Teaspoon, Ragdoll, Freddy Teddy and the cucumber sandwiches which couldn't stop burping!

70s and 80s kids tv was the best.

My dad worked at Thames TV - he worked on both Rainbow and Button Moon, and brought home Mr Spoon's 'autograph' for me. I also went to a staff Christmas party, where I met Rod Jane and Freddy, don't really remember much about it though... halcyon times!

I used to love Geoffrey (RIP), like a kind uncle or teacher.

Always preferred Bungle to the other 2. But yes, the original is terrifying! The poor creature seems to be part bear, part kangaroo and part tarantula.

Indeed it was. Wish I still had my Tupperware lunch box with the traffic signs on the back …..

The full version of the Picture Box theme is considerably more disturbing…

I remember Paper Play having 2 spiders, Itsy and Bitsy. Think I was too old to watch Let's Pretend but I don't think Itsy and Bitsy were for my age either. I just thought they were cute.

My brother and I were quite strict with viewing everything we could. Play School, then a cartoon like Children of the Sun or that one where they were superheros and used to blast out of a volcano, then Jackanory (°BORING), then Think of a Number or Take Hart. Then it was a cartoon then Blue Peter then Ivor the Engine or Willow the Wisp. Then the News so we were off!!

bluetopazlove · 07/04/2024 20:52

I must be weird because I absolutely loved Jackanory , loved it , but I loved story time on Playschool . Also when started school I used to fall asleep in the book corner when reading 📚.

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 07/04/2024 21:07

I liked the Bernard Cribbens Jackanory but I was definitely more of a short attention span, cartoon sort of fan. Playhouse I liked though. When they acted out a fairy tale.

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 07/04/2024 21:12

Now I think of it, Ivor the Engine was just written to send little kids to sleep. It was so gentle and soft, with the train noises going home over the hill. The phsssshh tikoff phssshh tikoff. Quite ready to go to bed now myself

Yes it did, a curtain anyway - it was my absolute favourite programme for a while, closely followed by Button Moon and Chocablock.

I had a doll called Hamble too, but I think it was just one of the tiny tears dolls. I still have a rag doll called Jemima, a Big Bear and a little bear and a Humpty in my loft.

Loved Bod! I used to make Finger Bobs but found the actual programme a bit weird.

LoreleiG · 07/04/2024 22:51

Here comes Bod!
