The PP that has a 21 year old ULEZ compliant car is very lucky, because a petrol car has to comply with Euro 4, which is generally cars registered with the DVLA after 2005. There were a few cars that met the standard from 2001, though, so that PP is very fortunate indeed not to have to either pay the ULEZ or buy a new car.
Meanwhile, our (perfectly good and not-very-old) car wasn't compliant, and neither is my sister's or my parents'. We all live practically on the outer border of the expanded zone, and it's all fields and golf courses at the end of my road, and not much public transport. Outer zone 6, especially south of the river, is not at all like inner London in that respect...
We bit the bullet and bought a new car, which is great for London air, but I dread to think how many years of driving in our old car would have been the equivalent of those pesky emissions etc involved in manufacturing the new car we bought. But hey, that's not SK's problem, so it doesn't count!
I agree that air quality improvements are probably needed. Indeed, in the run up to the expansion, SK was busy tweeting how "nowhere in London has safe air quality right now!" Not even in his existing ULEZ zone, apparently, so read into that what you will.
What I disagree was the way that SK went about introducing it: the short time between announcement and implementation, at a time when new cars had very long lead times due to a shortage of parts and as a result second hand car prices were sky high. The fiddling of the consultation survey results, to discount replies he disagreed with. The fact that he ignored the vote results altogether.
So on those grounds, amongst others, I don't want to vote for Sadiq.
But, having said all that, now it's here, I think the expanded ULEZ should stay. People have spent money and made decisions because of it, and they would rightly be pissed off if it was scrapped.
So I don't know who to vote for. Susan Hall is awful in every single respect, not just her ULEZ attitude, so she's a definite no.
