It's Count Binface/Lord Buckethead for me. I don't think he could do a worse job than his predecessors.

So who do you want to be the next Mayor of London?

It wasnt just central london, its the outskirts too. And most people, especially young people who had only recently bought their first cars, earning a normal income £20k-£40k who have rent/mortgage to pay and with the rising cost of living, struggled to buy a new car that was compliant. Just because people live in/ near London doesnt mean theyre loaded and can afford it. It was very frustrating as there was nothing wrong with the cars we had! I was one of them. But i had no choice, my car at the time was fine, nothing wrong with it but it didnt meet ULEZ standards, id only had it a few years but I had to get rid and get a knew one, and so did so many other young people i know who had older cars. Its a joke. But I agree there is no point in reversing it now. For many reasons I wont be voting for Khan and pray he doesnt get back in.

Good luck finding a study that is not heavily biased...this is pushed onto us by the establishment. It's part of their vile plan to keep us in our place... literally. Anyone with half a brain and eyes can see exactly what happens to areas when these ludicrous schemes are brought in.

So you don't have any evidence for your assertions.

I am also a little confused why a measure that reduces traffic, pollution and makes streets nicer to live on is a vile plan to keep us in our place, could you perhaps explain how that works?
Are there fences put up at to stop people leaving the streets that are in the LTN?

Likemyjealouseel · 15/04/2024 20:15

Khan, but Binface would do a much better job than almost all of the others.

It's makes some streets nicer for people to live on and some streets much worse. It's a form of social apartheid. Some journeys in my area are now much longer in terms of time and distance as the more direct route is blocked by their plant boxes. How on earth that is better is beyond me. But anyway a quick google will show you that even tfl has conceded that they can in some cases increase traffic on surrounding roads and impact bus times. The Streatham ltn is a perfect example. Why do you think that didn't work?

I live in an area with several LTNs (north-east London ) and traffic is definitely better than before, including on the high street and the surrounding roads.

There are more bikes around, and the buses are busier, so people are clearly choosing other ways to travel.

suburburban · 15/04/2024 20:23

Yes and causes more pollution if the other roads are gridlocked surely

Do you have any evidence to show that any streets are much worse? I am sure studies have probably been done?

Fortunately you even said yourself that those living on residential streets that have less traffic because you are not driving along them are better off as a result. That is how it is better.

Virtually all streets in London have residential property on them

Comedycook · 15/04/2024 20:58

If you object to anyone driving down a road with residential property on it, then the only solution is to pedestrianise virtually the whole of London

2proseccosplease · 15/04/2024 20:59

Well Nick Scanlon sounds fun 🙁

YouwouldthinkIhavemoresense · 15/04/2024 21:07

Never in a million years would I or anyone else I know vote for Khan. London is a mess.

An excellent plan, probably best to start with those streets which have the highest prooportion of houses on don't you think?

Is that the vile plan you were refering to earlier?
To make all of London much pleasanter for people to live in?

So all roads then. Suburban London is road after road of residential housing. Most of the north and south circular has residential housing on it. Do you think they should be pedestrianised?

Before I reach any conclusions I would like to consider all the available evidence. Previously that which I have read suggested that LTNs reduced traffic, there was a poster earlier suggesting this was not the case, so I am waiting for them to return with evidence to back up their assertion.
That way i can make an informed decision.

Hiker50 · 15/04/2024 21:37

Khan. He upsets all the right people.
The pollution loving gammons and gamministas will implode.

To be fair, this is MN and it is largely a leftist site. I don’t think Khan has been a good Major for the capital at all. My opinion 🤷‍♀️

Starting to get the opinion there are a lot of people on this thread who do not live in London.

Plenty of people in London don't like khan
..that not surprising. He doesn't get 100% of the vote does he. Ergo plenty of people don't vote for him. Very odd that you're questioning whether people who dislike him actually live in London.

I dislike him and wont be voting for him. I just question whether people here live in London as im surprised the amount of support for ULEZ. Those effected definitely wouldnt support it. And some of the comments about the roads being clearer/easier to travel on? Theyre definitely not, maybe in very central London but London is a huge area. The support for Khan baffles me, crime is out of control and he wastes our money on useless crap.
The amount of money wasted on the London Borough of Culture/Waltham Forest Light show was a joke. We dont hear about it anymore.
And the dangerous bike lanes/zebra crossings put in place EVERYWHERE. They are so dangerous and cost so much.

localnotail · 15/04/2024 23:11

Jklmo59 · 15/04/2024 12:42

Just out of interest.. those who are backing Khan because of ULEZ. Did any of you have to go through the struggle of finding money you don't have to buy a new car when he introduced the ULEZ?
It effected the poorest the most, those who couldn't afford to get a new car but would be have to pay a toll daily/be fined if they didn't.

you literally don't need a car in London - its a luxury, not a necessity. If you want to use a car occasionally, its much cheaper to rent it/ get a car share etc.

Outer London is very different to zone one. Some parts of Bromley for example are virtually rural in comparison to central London!

Jklmo59 · 15/04/2024 23:21

Not everyone who lives in London works in London/ spends every day in London. So a car in necessity for a lot of us. A lot of people need a car for work. What do you expect tradesmen to do, take all of their tools on their back on a bus? Plus train fares are ridiculous and go up each year, theyre like a second mortgage for most. I think people are getting confused by those living in central london who have a nice office job with a 10 min commute and the rest of london.

Well I live in Zone 2 and I would really like all the cars to just disappear! There are buses, tube, overground, DLR, taxies, minicabs - no need for privately owned cars, they're just smelly and annoying. Park in Zone 4 and take public transport! Obvs appreciate the business owners needing vehicles for delivery, people with disabilities etc - but ordinary private cars are unnecessary as far as I'm concerned.
