How much is one portion of pasta?

Noed · 26/03/2024 00:08

I always struggle with pasta to know how much to cook for the average portion. I've heard conflicting answers some say 50g of dried is a portion and some say 100g is the perfect portion.

So please answer my really boring question, how much pasta do you cook per person? Thank you

70g because that's what it says on the back of the pasta

purpleme12 · 26/03/2024 00:10

Or 75g actually.

OneWiseDuck · 26/03/2024 00:11

I’m sure most bags of dried pasta say 70/75g of uncooked pasta is one serving.

I go with how hungry I am and what I’m having with it tbh!

this is a riddle that no one can answer. You either cook enough to feed a small mouse, or enough for an entire village

(me personally I have 40-60grams cooked weight for me but Dh and kids have more

Precipice · 26/03/2024 00:12

I just do multiple handfuls until it looks right in the pot.

TeenLifeMum · 26/03/2024 00:12

I always did 3oz but 75g is only 2.6oz… maybe this is why I’m over weight 🙈

Noed · 26/03/2024 00:13

Thank you! I am blaming tiredness and illness on not thinking to read the pack of the packet. Feel very silly now.

Not the single reason - chocolate and bread are also to blame.

OneWiseDuck · 26/03/2024 00:13

My mum does two or three handfuls per person which is easier than weighing but then it really comes down to how big the chefs hands are 🤣

Appleblum · 26/03/2024 00:22

Depends on your appetite! In my household we cook 250g of dried pasta for 2 adults and 2 children. I'd probably cook 60g for myself.

Mmhmmn · 26/03/2024 00:25

100g, always, weighed on scales! Neither of us overweight.

BearlyUp · 26/03/2024 00:26

2.5 handfuls (don’t know what that weighs as I don’t own any scales!)

coxesorangepippin · 26/03/2024 00:27

oh god who knows

Icantremembermyusername · 26/03/2024 00:32

It depends on the sauce, I think. And the sides. For carbonara we need 100g per person. Spaghetti Bolognese, maybe 75g? Lasagne needs less as there’s so much sauce and usually a salad but pesto needs more. It is a conundrum, to be sure!

HeddaGarbled · 26/03/2024 00:34

Yeah. Do people really weigh it?

DramaAlpaca · 26/03/2024 00:40

I read the packet, guess in handfuls how much a portion is, then add a bit more for luck. Not exactly scientific but it all seems to get eaten.

Which might explain why I have a bit of a spare tyre round my middle Hmm

CupOfCoffeeandaPineappleChunk · 26/03/2024 00:43

Two handfuls each ish, but at others say it depends on the sauce. If there's a really great sauce you need less than if there's something like pesto I find.

SayFuckTheLemonsAndBail · 26/03/2024 00:46

I just chuck whatever in. I've never weighed my food and I have very little idea how many calories are in things. I've never been overweight.

I do, purely because (per this thread) the idea of trying to get the portion right is so scary otherwise! 75g per person, weighed, like it says on the packet is easy.

Medschoolmum · 26/03/2024 00:58

The last time I weighed it, I used 75g of pasta per person, which is what it said on the packet. It was definitely too much (and we aren't dainty eaters!!).

A half bag (250g) is typically plenty for 3 in our house with leftovers equivalent to a fourth portion. Again, not stingy servings.

So my guess is around 60g per person, but it probably depends on how you cook it as well. Typically, our pasta dishes will be bulked up with veggies etc, but if you were only eating it with a simple sauce, maybe the 75g per person thing would be more accurate?

SnowFrogJelly · 26/03/2024 00:59

75 grams

RainbowRedPanda · 26/03/2024 01:23

I do 300g for 2 adults and 2 preschoolers, we always have leftovers from that.

NC03 · 26/03/2024 01:35

I do 70g usually but I only really eat it as a pasta bake so I'm not too fussed if it's over or under as there's loads of other stuff in it!

Murpe · 26/03/2024 02:12

I see a 500g bag as about 6 portions if it's for something with a light sauce (also bearing in mind I am likely to send some of it flying into the sink when I over-energetically drain it) but for mac cheese or pasta bake, a bit less, possibly closer to 70g per head.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 26/03/2024 02:14

I cook 200g for us two but we like plenty of pasta and not so much sauce.
