How much is one portion of pasta?

Noed · 26/03/2024 00:08

I always struggle with pasta to know how much to cook for the average portion. I've heard conflicting answers some say 50g of dried is a portion and some say 100g is the perfect portion.

So please answer my really boring question, how much pasta do you cook per person? Thank you

It's never the main part of a meal for me, more like an ingredient or side dish, so I stick to around 45g.

If it is the main part of the meal, the amount is going to vary depending on your apatite.

Yourethebeerthief · 26/03/2024 04:10

Omg I've literally no idea.

If I were to estimate I'd say... all of it? All the pasta? Does that sound about right?

sashh · 26/03/2024 05:00

This is why I buy tagliatelle, it is in, well I call them 'nests', two is a portion for me, or three if I'm hungry.

I aim for 150g for two adults and a toddler. So in theory an adult portion for us is 60g but I doubt I plate it up evenly once cooked.

Mumoftwo1312 · 26/03/2024 05:16

We use 250g for two adults and a 3yo and we'd be starving on anything less. None of us overweight. I don't weigh it, it's half a 500g pack.

45g is literally less than my 3yo has, and she eats in a little baby bear sized bowl! If my dh served me up a portion that size I'd be like wtf!

Threads like this remind me of my favourite thread in Classics where the op is pregnant and the dh buys takeaway from the chippy but not enough chips and we all told her to LTB

Definitelylivedin · 26/03/2024 05:34

100g per person. Yes I weigh it to make sure we don't over eat. 40g is a child's portion.

As for eating the amount written on the packet, have you ever weighed a portion of cereal?

ArcticBells · 26/03/2024 05:44

Four handfuls Blush

KevinDeBrioche · 26/03/2024 06:06

80g pp. yes I weigh it otherwise I make too much. That’s for four including two hungry teens and usually all goes. If there are leftovers DH takes for lunch the next day.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 26/03/2024 06:06

This is something I've been trying to figure out too. Is everyone talking about dry weights?

CirreltheSquirrel · 26/03/2024 06:09

90g dry. That's what it says on the packets I use and it feels about right

bluecomputerscreen · 26/03/2024 06:43

5 adult sized people here.
we cook one pack (500g)
we are very generous with veg in the sauce and dc add a mountain of cheese
often we have a small portion left. so possibly around 90g pp I would say.

Girasoli · 26/03/2024 06:54

Assuming you are a woman and don't have giant hands
2 handfuls for an adult
1 handful for a child

(From an Italian)

reluctantbrit · 26/03/2024 06:54

I have cereal bowl which is enough for DD and me if we plan to have leftovers.
I add another handful if DH, DD and I eat with no leftovers.

Is there is a protein part of the dinner like a chicken breast, I use less than I would use if I have a veggie pasta dish.

Aethelthryth · 26/03/2024 06:56

75g for a first course; 125g for a main course

Passthecake30 · 26/03/2024 06:59

For my 16yr old ds, 5-6 uncooked handfuls, about 200g 🙄

I’ve lost sight what is normal due to his appetite but it used to be 350g spaghetti/tagliatelle

Miamasmin · 26/03/2024 07:21

I get a plate and put some on until it looks about right. If two of us are eating I do this twice!

Crushed23 · 26/03/2024 07:22

I only cook for me, and I have 40g dried weight. It’s gluten-free protein pasta so much more filling than regular pasta.

(And yes, I do weigh it!)

Swoopy · 26/03/2024 07:23

Recommended serving is 75g dried and that’s about what I have. DH eats more like 300g (genuinely) as he often only eats one meal a day. So it depends who’s eating and how hungry they are.

blackberryhill · 26/03/2024 07:26

As someone else on this thread said, it depends on the pasta dish. If it's a non-bulky sauce with no protein (e.g. pesto), then probably somewhere between 80 -100g (but we try to avoid cooking these often). If it's a thicker sauce (Bolognese) or we're having meat or similar with it, then more like 50 - 60g.

I could eat unlimited pasta if left to my own devices so can't rely on being full to make me stop.

Yodel294 · 26/03/2024 07:26

Half a bag (250g) would feed four adults here, especially if the sauce has bulk (bolognese for example is much more filling than plain pesto or even a simple tomato sauce).

There's also a convenience in having another half bag waiting for next time, rather than lots of ends of bags which aren't quite enough for a family meal.... I don't always buy the same shapes so end up with remnants with different cooking times which are complicated to mix!

eacapade1982 · 26/03/2024 07:36

1 packet for 2 adults and 2 kids and there’s usually leftovers for 1-2 meals. So probably serving 70g for kids and 110g for adults. 40 would barely touch the sides…

TubeScreamer · 26/03/2024 07:41

With a thick meaty sauce then 60-70g
if it’s a light dish (linguine and prawns eg) then closer to 100g

much, much less with fresh pasta.

Butwhataboutthesealions · 26/03/2024 07:45

If you are having spaghetti then the big hole in the middle of a pasta spoon thingy measures one portion.

SallyWD · 26/03/2024 07:47

Everyone's different. I eat 50g if I'm trying to lose weight. Usually 60 to 70g. I personally think 100g is too much carbs. I'd rather have more sauce, protein and veg and less pasta.

midgetastic · 26/03/2024 07:51

Handful for me and 2 or 3 for dh
