How much is one portion of pasta?

Noed · 26/03/2024 00:08

I always struggle with pasta to know how much to cook for the average portion. I've heard conflicting answers some say 50g of dried is a portion and some say 100g is the perfect portion.

So please answer my really boring question, how much pasta do you cook per person? Thank you

I usually weigh 60g of spaghetti each for spag bol and 75g each for a pasta bake/ pasta salad. There are two of us usually and that always seems to give plenty. I do use wholewheat pasta though so not sure if that makes a difference ( either to dry weight or fullness when eating)

merrymelodies · 26/03/2024 07:52

500g for four if pasta is the main dish.

Chitterchatterer · 26/03/2024 07:53

A 500g bag feeds 6 people

Wow in this house it’s 250g for four though younger ds doesn’t eat much.

Radiatorvalves · 26/03/2024 07:55

75g for me, c100g for DH and 200g each for 17,18 yo boys. Tall thin and v sporty.

Menomeno · 26/03/2024 07:57

I just bung what looks like the right amount into the pan. It ends up either enough to feed 2 small cats, or enough to feed 12 bison.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 26/03/2024 07:58

I’m surprised by how little, on the whole, a portion is for posters.

I Hadn’t thought that we eat big portions at all, I eat the smallest, then teenage DS and DH probably eat about the same. I weight it and close to 300g is what I’d cook for all three of us.

SoupDragon · 26/03/2024 08:02

I never get this right. The portions printed on the pack are usually too large for us so I try to do it by eye. A handful of macaroni each is right for me and DD and I remember measuring spaghetti once and finding that out optimum amount was 2oz per person (this seemed to even out well across the 2 adult men and me and DD!).

Any other pasta shape and I always get it wrong.

TBH it depends on what balance of pasta v sauce you like.

Noicant · 26/03/2024 08:03

200g for 2 adults and 4yr old, often have a bit left over (enough for a small lunch portion). People need different amounts of food depending on age, height and activity. Tbh if you can eat loads and maintain a healthy weight, thats a win.

Wheeeeee · 26/03/2024 08:08

My Mum taught me '2 oz per person' which I think is about 55 g. That's what I did when I left home and was slim. Now I do 75-100 g and I'm not slim 🤔

I also genuinely used to think stir fry didn't need noodles, just veg and protein.

mentalblank · 26/03/2024 08:27

100g of fusilli per adult in our house, half that for each (small) child. Though the children are massive pasta fans and I suspect they encroach on the adult portions...

whoamI00 · 26/03/2024 09:22

For me as much as I'd like to eat

Beezknees · 26/03/2024 09:23

60-70g for me. For strapping teen DS probably double that!

RainraingoawayRosie · 26/03/2024 09:24

50g for me I've always liked more topping than the pasta, veggie bolognese or a vegetable sauce I have masses of that in comparison

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/03/2024 09:29

For a main evening meal for me and dh, I cook roughly 100g each, but we rarely have any pudding/dessert.

Yourethebeerthief · 26/03/2024 04:10

Omg I've literally no idea.

If I were to estimate I'd say... all of it? All the pasta? Does that sound about right?

😂 same!

Cheeesus · 26/03/2024 09:38

We do 100g each but then there’s a bit leftover to freeze which is handy because middle child doesn’t like potatoes really, still often do him a portion of pasta instead.
Weighing is easier than 10 or more handfuls. I also don’t trust my handful size.

concernedchild · 26/03/2024 09:40

I do 50g for lunch, 75g for dinner.

ConsistentlyElectrifiedElves · 26/03/2024 09:41

I saw on TV once that a mug was a good measure for shaped pasta like penne. I have a mug that, when weighed, holds 80g of pasta, so I use that. One mug full per person.

That said, if we have garlic bread with our pasta, two mugs (and a little handful for luck) will do us both for dinner and me for lunch the next day.

Seeline · 26/03/2024 09:46

But it varies with pasta shape too! I know that 2 handfuls of fusilli is right for me and DD. DH and DS have 3.
But Penne and rigatoni are just empty tubes so probably need a bit more,.
And the butterfly shapes are really hard to get a handful of so more again.
And how can you do a handful of spaghetti?

Mazuslongtoenail · 26/03/2024 09:47

Mmhmmn · 26/03/2024 00:25

100g, always, weighed on scales! Neither of us overweight.

Edited

Same. I’d be ravenous if it was 60g!

Thank you! I am blaming tiredness and illness on not thinking to read the pack of the packet. Feel very silly now.

I wouldn't read the packet either. Chocolate tells you one row is a portion. It most definitely is not!

AlisonDonut · 26/03/2024 09:52

If it is just with a sauce, so Mac and cheese then 100g

If it is with a load of veggies like onion, pepper and tomato and veggie mince or Bolognese ,cooked with pasta added, then 75g

If it is a mixed raw salad type thing so fresh onions, peppers, tomatoes etc and a dressing as a side, then 50g

I always weight my rice and pasta and since doing that never have any issues with cooking too much or little.

Chewbecca · 26/03/2024 09:54

DS eats the entire amount left in the pack if he cooks for himself.

I do about 100g per adult if we are hungry and it is a light sauce. More like 75-80 for a substantial sauce.
