How much is one portion of pasta?

Noed · 26/03/2024 00:08

I always struggle with pasta to know how much to cook for the average portion. I've heard conflicting answers some say 50g of dried is a portion and some say 100g is the perfect portion.

So please answer my really boring question, how much pasta do you cook per person? Thank you

500g for four if pasta is the main dish.

This. I can’t imagine eating 40g of pasta. It would be barely visible 😂.

I can stretch 500g to 5 adults if we’re having spag bol but if it’s a lighter sauce then we definitely have 125g each. Except with macaroni cheese that seems to expand in the oven and I can normally get at least 6 portions from that.

We don’t eat anything with it though like garlic bread; pasta is the meal. Two of us are fat and two of us are thin. I don’t think the once a week pasta has much to do with it. That’s more likely the chocolate 😂

I just plonk it in the pan, usually a good half bag for two.

75g white pasta but I'll let myself have 100g if it's whole meal

I do handfuls until it looks right, probably about 400g’s for 5 of us. There’s always a couple of handfuls left in the bag anyway.

That’s for two adults, 3 young children including a toddler. Dh eats loads and never puts on weight so probably has 100g at least to himself, kids all love pasta too. Any left over makes a good lunch for the toddler the next day.

1 cup if its loose pasta (not spaghetti). 1/2 a cup of rice is enough for one.

When it comes to spaghetti, make an O with your thumb and forefinger no bigger than a £1 coin, that's enough for one person IMO.

We have a tendency to over eat and pile bigger portions on the plate than we need. I've found that sticking with the above portions is plenty and leaves very little waste to go in the bin.

75g-100g per person. Also depends if it is being served with anything - chicken pasta I’d reduce down the amount of pasta, but plain pasta and sauce I’d increase to 100g

Lougle · 26/03/2024 11:44

For a family of 5, I cook 350g of pasta (so 70g each) if I'm making a pasta bake or a macaroni cheese. There is always about 1/3 left, which my girls use as lunch the next day.

Instantcustard · 26/03/2024 11:58

We eat pasta everday and I always cook a 500g for 5. The 3 teenagers almost always have seconds and sometimes (but not often) there are leftovers.

YourFogLightsAreOnTheresNoFog · 26/03/2024 12:09

I go with 75g unless I'm dieting then 50g.

Mazuslongtoenail · 26/03/2024 09:47

Same. I’d be ravenous if it was 60g!

😄

Erm, obviously way too much. We do roughly 2 thirds of a bag of shells/shapes and nearly a packet of spaghetti for the 2 of us. If just the kids (4 of them) I do a whole packet between them and it always goes. Feel pretty gluttonous looking at this thread! Only exception is with my homemade pasta, which.is hugely more filling, so I might exercise some degree of restraint there. Pasta is my first love.

shouldntbeonhereagain · 26/03/2024 16:17

Nb shape or spaghetti not both!

SpongeBob2022 · 26/03/2024 16:24

I've always just 'measured' by pouring dried pasta into the bowl Im going to use before I cook it (doing slightly less to account for the fact it looks more when it's cooked).

I've just measured properly for my dinner now...I reckon I do 140g for my portion! I'm shocked to be honest. I'm also underweight.

If I was to have it with bolognese I would only have one spoon of the actual sauce as I prefer the pasta. But still, I'm a bit horrified.

therealcookiemonster · 26/03/2024 16:26

I will be 40 next year and have been cooking pasta since I was 19/20.... I have not to this day, cooked the right amount of pasta.

I have accepted that this is an achievement that is beyond me and feel at piece

@Noed I advice you to also accept your fate and be at peace

Minikievs · 26/03/2024 16:47

I live alone with 2 DC so I don't even measure it now. I just cook it, and if there's some left, I'll have it for lunch the next day 🤷‍♀️
I reckon half a 500g bag between the three of us. But one of them eats like a fully grown man and one eats like a baby bird. So I think the 250 probs equates to 90/70/50. With 40 for a lunch.
When I was with ExH we used to have a 500g pack of mince, 2/3 bag pasta and a garlic baguette between the two of us!! That blows my mind now!! I was much much fatter than I am now and he's as fat now as he was then (v fat)

100g per person. Yes I weigh it to make sure we don't over eat. 40g is a child's portion.

As for eating the amount written on the packet, have you ever weighed a portion of cereal?

I have frequently weighed my cereal after pouring it into a bowl.

Every single time I tried this, I'd given myself between 25 and 30 grams.

(and I do 75g pasta pp, unless it's lasagne which apparently is about half that)

Edited

I thought this was going to be yet more bad news about something else we shouldn't be eating, but yay! More leftover pasta for me!

Miamasmin · 27/03/2024 14:23

It's also much tastier reheated!
