I'll have to disagree with you there @L1ttledrummergirl - while I think the Tories have really cocked up Brexit, I don't believe it would ever have been a success. I firmly blame Brexit and the tories for the mess we are in.

DuncinToffee · 26/03/2024 09:08

Even if people didn't know what they voted for in 2016, they did know better in 2019 when they voted for Johnson.

but project fear and corbyn

There is probably some half way house between full EU membership and cut off your nose to spite your face Tory Brexit that could have been negotiated that would have been a better option. Perhaps an agreement not disimilar to that which Norway has with the EU.

Wasn't there a politican suggesting that the UK could be a bit like Norway?

Notonthestairs · 26/03/2024 09:18

There were loads of Conservative politicians that promised access to the single market - without ever explaining how that would look without freedom of movement.

The obvious answer being to keep freedom of movement.

DuncinToffee · 26/03/2024 09:26

Almost as if it was a bad thought out ad hoc referendum to appease the euroseptics in the party and hold off UKIP

Makes you wonder why Cameron ran away

"Or will the fuckitty fuckwits please fuck off"
😁

I'll have you know that after sitting on their hands (for 14 years) they think they are doing fucking good job 😉

You have to understand that many of these people were privately educated and taught that they are la creme de la creme in society. They think we should be grateful for their existence never mind anything else.

Notonthestairs · 26/03/2024 09:41

I am going to have to agree to disagree with @L1ttledrummergirl.
Aside from the economic consequences of Brexit, the result handed the future of the Conservative party to the ERG and diminished the influence of One Nationers. It was the ERG's pressure on May and then their support of Johnson that altered the make up of the Conservative party.
The rhetoric coming from Reform about only employing 'believers' - I think that language stems from Brexit. The ongoing attempts to remove the UK from ECHR stems from Brexit. The referendum may have been 8 years ago but the reverberations are still being felt (and Brexit isnt fully implemented).

I also suspect (based on not very much I freely admit) that British right wing politicians spend a lot more time courting US think tanks than they did before Brexit. Maybe I should be wearing a tinfoil hat!

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/03/2024 08:08

I wish people would stop blaming Brexit for our problems.
When people voted, they didn't know what they were voting for, all they had to go on were the promises being made. Promises that weren't followed through.

The problems gave been caused by the conservatives mismanagement of Brexit. The blame lies with them, and only them, not the event itself. We need to stop deflecting from them.

If I had a choice between keeping my life as it is or a mystery box, I would not choose the mystery box. I have no idea what people thought they were getting other than people like Dyson and Farage getting away without paying taxes. There was nothing at all concrete for the average person but a lot of experts (thanks Gove for destroying the word) telling people how it would impact our farming, exports and standing in the world. Why half of the country went for the mystery box is beyond me.

Some people thought Brexit meant no more brown and black people. I know this is not true of every Brexiteer and I know that left wing people voted for it too. But still.

IClaudine · 26/03/2024 09:51

The day after Brexit, racist slogans were written in the loos at work. That had never happened before.

Absolutely - you can see it on social media with the rhetoric ramping up alongside Trump. Reform is hoping to cream off the Kippers (which sounds pretty grim, apologies) and this whole "Stop The Boats" is the new catchphrase like "Take Back Control". Impact is next to zero in the grand scheme of things, but if they can convince people to look at the squirrel rather than the failure of Brexit they might get another load of people voting for Mystery Box 2.0.

The farmers were warned so many times about the fact their subsidies were not going to be guaranteed, that the cost of living would change the way people shopped, that border controls would make food exports almost impossible as we would be a third country and would be hugely costly to set up (they haven't even kicked in yet - see Dover). They ignored ALL of the evidence.

I agree with all that,

Seeing that London video yesterday, can you imagine the pre 2019 bunch issuing that?

Sadly true - see Stop The Boats. But if you are Ukrainian we will invite you into our homes...but Gaza can burn.

Not much has changed sadly but I am hopeful slightly more people recognise it is the people in charge rather than the people in boats screwing this country over.

The weekend after the Eastern European community here was targeted with racist stuff attached to cars, lamp posts, etc. Bloody horrible stuff. You’d think our Tory MP would have called it out, wouldn’t you? But nothing, not a single word, not a tweet, zilch. Says it all.

Well, this is a bit embarrassing

They also manage to allege that Sadiq Khan "seized" power. Cue lots of responses pointing out that he's been elected twice, which is more than anyone can say for Sunak.

Also people on Twitter pointing out that this is what happens when the government drastically cuts police funding, despite which London is the 14th safest city in the world.
