Susan Hall is still lying on Twitter about Khan introducing a pay per mile scheme.

How is such outright lying allowed during an election campaign? At least there is no chance of her winning.

This is what I just don't get. I think one of the biggest changes during my adult life is that lies are acceptable. Politicians say an outright lie and there's no accountability. Once upon a time this would have been seen as disgraceful. Now it's so commonplace nobody has any idea what's true.

I hope she gets challenged on her lies in public.

I agree, Jack Profumo left politics because of lying in the House of Commons, for example.

Though anyone who votes for a known liar should hang their head in shame.

Hi all - long time lurker of this thread! Don’t want to derail any conversations but wanted to post what just came through my door. Apparently in the West Mids it’s all Labour’s fault. Or will be. Or was.

That's the Boris effect.
Our whole democracy is predicated on not lying to the house, but Boris showed you can and there are no consequences. They talk about that on Rest is Politics, saying they hope Starmer will bring in proper "Standards in public life" rules. I really hope he does.

AdamRyan · 06/04/2024 16:16

What I don't understand is how come Boris never got charged with Misconduct in a public office

https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/misconduct-public-office#:~:text=Charging%20Practice-,Introduction,of%20the%20public%20office%20held.

a public officer acting as such wilfully neglects to perform their duty and/or wilfully misconducts themselves to such a degree as to amount to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder without reasonable excuse or justification

The following have been held to be public officers:

elected officials (MPs, councillors, ministers, mayors)

https://www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/misconduct-public-office#:~:text=Charging%20Practice-,Introduction,of%20the%20public%20office%20held.

Maybe I should report a crime to the Met and see what happens

In any case, I think what we need is a law with teeth about lying. Or a more beefed up set of parliamentary standards with written consequences.

Misconduct in Public Office | The Crown Prosecution Service

I think that Starmer is still a politician and one who is going to have a large majority and thanks to Boris, a constitution which has been run over by a bus. There is now very little to stop a powerful government doing exactly what it likes, and the Conservatives are going to be right in the firing line of that. Labour would not actually be a political party if they did not immediately start structuring the country in their favour. Starmer won't have to lie; he will have the power, much more power thanks to Boris Johnson smashing up our constitutional conventions which did limit power. That is now gone. So expect boundary changes, funding games, promotions for the loyal and structural changes for Labour for the long term.

All those things that Johnson said he'd do for the Conservatives but was too drunk and idle to get around to doing.

Nice yellow colour, is there any mentioning of Conservatives on it, or even their logo?

No, six mentions of Labour though. Sheer stupidity, what will people remember at the ballot box?

Good call

Andy who?

Andy Street is doing a reasonable job and isn't prone to the ridiculous pronouncements of his Westminster colleagues. If I lived in the area I could be persuaded to vote for him, but then the temptation to give Sunak a bloody nose would also be quite high.

TokyoSushi · 06/04/2024 18:09

How random, Andy Street clearly trying to bury the fact he's a Tory and hoping those less on the ball won't notice!

(And no, I still can't get over him and Michael Fabricant!)

Cornettoninja · 06/04/2024 18:20

(And no, I still can't get over him and Michael Fabricant!)

it’s my immediate first though my when I see his name now!

Just goes to show, there’s someone for everyone!

BIossomtoes · 06/04/2024 18:21

I didn’t know about that. I feel a bit queasy now.

Cornettoninja · 06/04/2024 18:30

Just to make a political comment to counter my mostly (because I judge his choice of partner as evidence against his character tbh) gossipy one - I note that Street doesn’t offer any solutions for Birmingham’s financial difficulties, he’s quite happy to just rubberneck.

*edit - just noticed my appalling typos - excuse me!

MrsMurphyIWish · 06/04/2024 18:49

Opening page of local election pamphlet. I live in a swing seat. We are currently Labour but it’s a difficult seat to keep as we are on the border of a very rural, affluent ward.

It’ll be interesting how much the smear campaign will be nationally if this is happening in just my ward.

So has Jenkyns switched to Reform? Or is it still embargoed? I can't find anything else about it.

She was posing for photos at Farage's birthday party earlier this week.

🚨 NEW: Tory rebels allege that members of the 1922 Committee have been promised peerages to "prop up" Rishi Sunak

[@Telegraph]

What I think is interesting is how much the Telegraph dislikes Sunak. The same story about Johnson/Truss would have been ignored.
