How often do you clean your toilet at home?

Exactly that really.

Basically we have had a tummy bug situation here since the weekend. I'll spare you the details but this morning I went about a full thick bleach clean with an old sponge all over even up under the rim and down the u-bend. Pretty much made sure every last germ in my loo was caught and killed and to the point I'm dreading needing to go for a pee and undoing my hard work 😆

I certainly don't do that level of clean often - I think it's only the third time I've done that since we moved here nine years ago and one of those cleans was when we first moved in! I usually clean the toilet once a week with my weekly bathroom clean where I will antibac spray and wipe over the toilet seat, flush handle, etc and leave bleach under the rim. I then usually do another bleach squirt under the rim at some point during the week.

So, how often do you clean your toilet at home? Specifically, how often do you antibac clean the seat, flush handle, etc?
How often do you squirt bleach under the rim?
How often do you a full blitz clean like I done this morning?

Super exciting thread I know but I'm nosey and also checking if my routine is up to scratch 😆

This is mumsnet - everyone will be saying every 45 minutes. But realistically I’m more like you and think the amount of bleach some posters claim to use is pretty awful.

idontlikealdi · 20/03/2024 12:40

Unless its obviously in need once or twice a week

moreoutsidespace · 20/03/2024 12:40

a deep clean of the toilet every week with my bathroom clean. I’ll also wipe round (boys) every evening, just for wee splashes.

every 2-3 days i will give it a scrub with cleaner and put bleach down. but i wipe handle and seat every day with anti bac spray.

polkadot24 · 20/03/2024 12:41

2 to 3 times a week

GigiAnnna · 20/03/2024 12:42

Daily, but to be fair, there's 6 of us with just the one toilet. I'll spray and wipe it down every day and squirt bleach, washing up liquid or toilet cleaner inside and scrub it about twice a week.

GLC789 · 20/03/2024 12:42

Every few days - gets a bleach and toilet brush scrub.

Weekly - full clean, Inc antibac seat etc

Then occasionally I go mental and do full on "as if we've had a bug" clean, with elbow length gloves and u-bends and all that grim jazz.

For context, it's just me and DH here and we always leave the loo, how we would like to find it. I imagine once the house has children, the cleaning will be needed more frequently 😂😂

NannyPay · 20/03/2024 12:44

Twice a week the cleaner cleans the loos but I doubt it's a deep clean. I tend to do those once every few months.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/03/2024 12:45

Just me here and I squirt bleach around the rim and down inside probably about four times a week, and wipe the seat and around the outside of the loo when I do the bathroom (about once a week, maybe less frequently if nobody's coming) and I think I've only gone 'full cleanzilla' once, after the toilet blocked up and I had to get the drain rods out.

Are you doing some kind of market research. These are very specific questions you want answers to

Attackofthekillereggs · 20/03/2024 12:48

I have the entire pan and cistern replaced after every use.

Bathroom cleaned weekly - includes antibac, seat, handle, etc.
Bleach under the rim, don't flush - daily (evening before bed)
Full blitz - weekly as per bathroom clean.

If there was a D&V bug though I would bleach after every use.

Deadringer · 20/03/2024 12:50

Usually twice a week, only very occasionally give it a really good scrub down.

Cleanzilla. That was exactly the sort of wording I was trying to think of when writing this. It was exactly like that?

Bleach at least twice a day
Clean lid, seat, flush everyday with antibacterial
Deep clean once a week

Invisimamma · 20/03/2024 12:53

Full deep clean once a week.

Spray and wipe over every couple of days.

Oh god no. jeez that would be a boring job 😆 No I just broke it down as I tend to do a clean at weekends and then a quick bleach squirt during the week so I sort of feel they are different types of cleans. Dunno.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 20/03/2024 12:53

I clean it every day, squirt antibac both sides of the seat, lid, cistern, wipe it over then a bit of bleach under the rim, 2 minute job

Oooh, have I coined a new phrase?

FloofyBird · 20/03/2024 12:55

When I can be arsed and when it looks dirty. I don't use bleach but have a homemade Nancy birtwhistle spray for inside the loo and use wipes elsewhere (probably undoing my eco friendly cleaner work there really!)

Once a week with a toilet brush, bleach or toilet cleaner, whatever I have there, and a wipe over of the whole thing with a toilet cleaning wipe.

Obviously, if the bowl needs cleaning during the week it gets a squirt of cleaner and a clean with the brush.

Aug12 · 20/03/2024 12:58

Pop bleach down it every night, antibacterial seat/flush etc daily sometimes multiple times if my little ones miss. Once a week it gets a full scrub down and toilet seat taken off and soaked In a bucket of hot bleach water

Shetlands · 20/03/2024 12:58

Anti-bac the seat & handle every day and do the bowl & rim once a week.

I hate housework but that's a quickie so it gets done.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/03/2024 13:02

They have a going over every day.
