How often do you clean your toilet at home?

Exactly that really.

Basically we have had a tummy bug situation here since the weekend. I'll spare you the details but this morning I went about a full thick bleach clean with an old sponge all over even up under the rim and down the u-bend. Pretty much made sure every last germ in my loo was caught and killed and to the point I'm dreading needing to go for a pee and undoing my hard work 😆

I certainly don't do that level of clean often - I think it's only the third time I've done that since we moved here nine years ago and one of those cleans was when we first moved in! I usually clean the toilet once a week with my weekly bathroom clean where I will antibac spray and wipe over the toilet seat, flush handle, etc and leave bleach under the rim. I then usually do another bleach squirt under the rim at some point during the week.

So, how often do you clean your toilet at home? Specifically, how often do you antibac clean the seat, flush handle, etc?
How often do you squirt bleach under the rim?
How often do you a full blitz clean like I done this morning?

Super exciting thread I know but I'm nosey and also checking if my routine is up to scratch 😆

I have the entire pan and cistern replaced after every use.

😆 I'll place my order for a new loo after I go for my next pee then 😁

Use loo cleaner once a day, then clean the seat, handle, etc, once a week when I clean the bathroom. It's only me though so no one else to miss or make it dirty.

PuppiesOnTheWay · 20/03/2024 13:06

Every day for both loos. Always have done!

anti-bac spray and wipe with kitchen roll which then gets thrown away the seat, under the seat, round the rim and flush handle whenever the bathroom gets cleaned. Which I'd like to pretend is weekly but in reality sometimes ends up being fortnightly. But I live alone and am out at work a lot and often shower at work or the gym, so it really gets very little use compared to some! I chuck bleach round under the rim between cleans.

BeretRaspberry · 20/03/2024 13:11

I wipe the seat etc daily and deep clean it twice a week. I use soda crystals (flush loo, sprinkle on then clean) and then Nancy Birtwhistle’s pure magic.

Giveupnow · 20/03/2024 13:12

Not until reading this did I ever consider cleaning the flush! 🤣 to be fair, mine is like a flat button built into the wall so not on the cistern if that makes sense. It’s a back to wall / hidden cistern toilet.

what do you mean clean the u bend? Under the water? Never done that. I bleach every other day and wipe under seat maybe once- twice a week.

can’t believe some are taking the entire seats off weeekly! I’m clearly disgusting.

iwafs · 20/03/2024 13:12

Firstly I don’t use bleach as it’s useless for limescale control. Instead I use blue harpic which specifically says it’s for limescale (it also kills germs). I clean the toilet with harpic when it looks like it needs it. I don’t antibac the flush often. It shouldn’t really be dirty. I also don’t antibac the seat often - i don’t want cleaning products on my family’s skin. Unless people have strange shitting habits, toilets aren’t that dirty.

Theoldwoman · 20/03/2024 13:12

Every day. Sometimes twice. We only have one, 4 adults plus always extras.

sulkingsocks · 20/03/2024 13:14

Everytime i go to the loo. Its supwr quick then. I do live with people that don't though.

iwafs · 20/03/2024 13:16

The amount of bleach people are shoving down their bogs is ridiculous and unnecessary. And terrible for the environment. Bleach doesn’t even deal with limescale. I don’t even own any.

gamerchick · 20/03/2024 13:16

Every day. Takes a minute.

I don't use bleach at all unless there is a stomach bug in the house. Does my swede in the inappropriate use of bleach. Bleach doesn't clean.

.......and they pop them in the dishwasher for a really good clean!

Bearpawk · 20/03/2024 13:18

Once a week - scrub inside with toilet cleaner and the seat and outside with anti bac.
Only 2 adults and dp does sit- down wees though. There's a toilet brush and cleaner available in between cleans if required.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 20/03/2024 13:18

Every week, and a quick squirt of bleach maybe twice a week. Just me here, though.

You can get seats now that just unclip, rather than having to be completely unscrewed from the pan, so that’s probably what people are talking about. It’s been a game changer for me since we did the bathroom a couple of years ago. It means the pan can be cleaned without having to squeeze fingers under bits of lid.

Here it’s once a week or so, wiping down as needed between times. Just two of us these days but when we had a big family and three bathrooms it was one of them each day at least.

Snugglemonkey · 20/03/2024 13:27

At least once a day 😔

Not by choice! Small filthy skid mark leavers and pee spreaders 🤮

penguinbiscuits · 20/03/2024 13:27

Wow every day?!
Our cleaner does it once a week and I never do it.

Shetlands · 20/03/2024 13:28

I rarely use bleach - I use a plant-based, biodegradable anti-bac spray by Method. If the bowl is stained I pour in a drop of plant-based Ecover washing-up liquid and scrub it with a brush. Our water is very soft and we never get limescale anywhere.

I do not use bleach though I do use harpic.

givemushypeasachance · 20/03/2024 13:37

I live by myself and I'm out elsewhere 4 days out of 7. Not that often! Put some bleach or toilet cleaner down maybe once a week. Surface clean with an antibac wipe every couple of weeks, or if it starts to look dusty or grubby? I'm the only one using it after all and am washing my hands!

teabooks · 20/03/2024 14:37

Everyday

WitsEnd10 · 20/03/2024 14:56

Bleach gets a bad rep, but actually it has a very limited enovironmental impact because it degrades so quickly. It’s certainly much more environmentally friendly than most disinfectants.

mrsm43s · 20/03/2024 15:19

I use toilet bleach under the rims and scrub down with the loo brush after every poo. DH does also. Teenagers not so much, but if I ever see any skids I'd instantly clean them off with toilet bleach and loo brush. So at least once per day per loo, maybe twice. Twice a week I spray with bathroom cleaner spray and wipe over and under the toilet seat, cistern (including push flush button) and foot. I use loo roll for wiping down and flush it away after. I don't really do a "deep clean" ever, as doing what I do means they're always spotless. I generally have a little and often approach to cleaning.

@Giveupnow

other than missing the flush (no makes no difference where it is, it gets touched before hand washing to flush so need cleaning) you're perfectly normal.

@Justcallmelucy

there's only me here now, so

lid, base, toilet seat under toilet seat flush once or twice a week.

under rim with bleach, daily after I've used it

under the water/U bend by hand NEVER. If all the flushing & other cleaning isn't enough to keep that area clean then 🙅🏻‍♀️never did that even when it wasn't just me!

small boys, once standing, daily for years.

AristotelianPhysics · 20/03/2024 15:33

Unless obviously needed they are cleaned once or twice a week.
