How often do you clean your toilet at home?

Exactly that really.

Basically we have had a tummy bug situation here since the weekend. I'll spare you the details but this morning I went about a full thick bleach clean with an old sponge all over even up under the rim and down the u-bend. Pretty much made sure every last germ in my loo was caught and killed and to the point I'm dreading needing to go for a pee and undoing my hard work 😆

I certainly don't do that level of clean often - I think it's only the third time I've done that since we moved here nine years ago and one of those cleans was when we first moved in! I usually clean the toilet once a week with my weekly bathroom clean where I will antibac spray and wipe over the toilet seat, flush handle, etc and leave bleach under the rim. I then usually do another bleach squirt under the rim at some point during the week.

So, how often do you clean your toilet at home? Specifically, how often do you antibac clean the seat, flush handle, etc?
How often do you squirt bleach under the rim?
How often do you a full blitz clean like I done this morning?

Super exciting thread I know but I'm nosey and also checking if my routine is up to scratch 😆

Full clean of the inside and out twice a week. Rest of bathroom once a week.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 20/03/2024 15:56

I wipe it over 2-3 times a week and clean the rim etc. I don't use bleach because I can't as we are on a septic tank, I can't remember the last time a stomach bug hit the house so I am happy with my cleaning schedule and methods.

I put Harpic around the bowl every night as we go to bed in the ensuite. Also wipe over the flush handle and loo seat with antibacterial wipes. Same in the downstairs loo every other day. Same in main bathroom Foster Son uses every day Harpic around the bowl and antibacterial wipes on flush and seat. It has all day to work before FS comes home from college. Top floor loo in the shower room about once a week as not used much.

Twice a week, unless it gets obviously dirty in between.

Precipice · 20/03/2024 16:01

I clean it about once a month.

WhatTheFuckIsThat · 20/03/2024 16:03

I use flushable wipes for the handle, lid, seat, underneath - all every day. Bleach every day. I also wipe the door handle, light pull and cord.

I have the entire pan and cistern replaced after every use.

😀

Whenever it looks like it needs doing. Depressing to see so much bleach being used by people. Don't you care about the pollution in the environment?

teacrumpetsandcake · 20/03/2024 16:09

I'd spray and wipe it down about once every 7-10 days, and bleach maybe once or twice more in between if needed.

As for getting down into the u-bend... never? When you pour bleach down the toilet, it gets into the water and cleans as far as it needs to, you just leave it sitting there for an hour or two before flushing. I've never found it necessary to scrub the u-bend.

VikingLady · 20/03/2024 16:10

I bleach/brush it whenever I can see grot. I think I've done round the bottom twice in eight years, though I should do more, but cleaning is my most hated job. And no one is licking floors these days.

I do a better clean if we have tummy upsets, though I turf DH upstairs to the attic bathroom if he's ill, since he seems incapable of being tidy with his poos.

I agree... I do use bleach but I try to limit it to once or twice a week... it's pretty depressing to see people using bleach daily. I don't see how that could really be necessary, unless you are a huge family all using one loo.

IncompleteSenten · 20/03/2024 16:16

Toilets get cleaned every day but not with bleach. we use things like bicarb, citric acid and white vinegar for most household cleaning instead.
I've got pretty low standards when it comes to cleaning generally but I need a clean bathroom.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/03/2024 16:21

Once a week basic clean.
Once a month proper deep clean.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/03/2024 16:23

I clean my loo once a week thoroughly and drop some disifectant tabs in during the week if it needs it.
That keeps it clean all the time and it never needs a massive clean. I usually do it on thursday as its a job I hate and then it doesn't encroach on the weekend.

Gall10 · 20/03/2024 16:31

With the amount of bleach used on mumsnet it’s a wonder the oceans aren’t completely sterile & devoid of any marine life.

CactusMactus · 20/03/2024 16:51

Woah! People clean their loos everyday?
Once a week here.... and sometimes that's a bit shabby.

CactusMactus · 20/03/2024 16:52

Also, what's "disinfectant tabs"

Kelta · 20/03/2024 16:59

3 times a week (we have 5 toilets in the house though). Cleaner does them twice a week and I do them at the weekend. We have a septic tank so never use bleach though.

CarrotyO · 20/03/2024 17:27

Once every few weeks. I also use biodegradable plant-based cleaning products rather than bleach. Just me and my partner here. Toilet seems clean enough with that routine. I'm surprised people are cleaning so much, it seems like an overreaction.

Oldraver · 20/03/2024 17:27

I am generally slovenly. Clean of the loo with a brush when it's needed. And the kind of clean you mention once a week

No bleach used and a silicon toilet brush. I use an old wash up sponge to do the outside seat, surroundings, under the rim and down the pan

We live in a very hard water area and this does keep scale at bay without the need for bleach

BeaRF75 · 20/03/2024 17:29

I don't. My cleaner does it once a week, which is ample. We are never ill. Also keep chemicals to an absolute minimum - all this anti-bac stuff is unnecessary.

Pebbles16 · 20/03/2024 17:35

Crikey to the people who clean after every poo - I have IBD, I would be cleaning hourly!!!
In answer to the OP, proper clean twice a week.

hiredandsqueak · 20/03/2024 17:40

Daily but dd has ASD and a germ phobia so needs to be certain it's clean to be able to use it.

dothehokeycokey · 20/03/2024 17:54

Mine gets a daily anti bac wipe all
Over under the seat and Rik and a squirt of bleach.

On a weekend it gets scrubbed

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 20/03/2024 17:56

I'm a bit obsessive and do it everyday.
