How often do you clean your toilet at home?

Exactly that really.

Basically we have had a tummy bug situation here since the weekend. I'll spare you the details but this morning I went about a full thick bleach clean with an old sponge all over even up under the rim and down the u-bend. Pretty much made sure every last germ in my loo was caught and killed and to the point I'm dreading needing to go for a pee and undoing my hard work 😆

I certainly don't do that level of clean often - I think it's only the third time I've done that since we moved here nine years ago and one of those cleans was when we first moved in! I usually clean the toilet once a week with my weekly bathroom clean where I will antibac spray and wipe over the toilet seat, flush handle, etc and leave bleach under the rim. I then usually do another bleach squirt under the rim at some point during the week.

So, how often do you clean your toilet at home? Specifically, how often do you antibac clean the seat, flush handle, etc?
How often do you squirt bleach under the rim?
How often do you a full blitz clean like I done this morning?

Super exciting thread I know but I'm nosey and also checking if my routine is up to scratch 😆

I have the entire pan and cistern replaced after every use.

Is that all? I replace mine even if someone thinks of using it. I can't imagine being so grim 😂.

On a serious note, OP. I wipe down the seat and flush handle with anti-bac every day to keep on top of it, and I give it a deeper clean once a week when I'm cleaning the rest of the bathroom.

A thorough clean of everything once a week but quick touch up as and when needed. There are only the two of us, so not much mess to be cleaned up.

We never squirt bleach under the rim. We never use bleach or anti bac wipes.

To clean loo: spray ordinary bathroom cleaner on the push button, toilet seat top and underneath, and rim of the loo. Leave it to work for 15 minutes and wipe off with cheap recycled kitchen roll, starting at top and working down.

Pine toilet cleaner in the bowl, leave as long as possible then brush with a Mumsnet horrific toilet brush.

Once or twice a week, more frequently if anyone's been ill. Although I can't remember a stomach bug in the house, it's certainly been more than 15 years.

Weekly here. I spray and wipe everything down end of week, and chuck bleach into it beginning of the week; so it counts as twice 😁

I use flushable wipes for the handle, lid, seat, underneath - all every day. Bleach every day. I also wipe the door handle, light pull and cord.

There's no such thing as a flushable wipe. Why haven't people got the message yet! No wipes down the ruddy bog.

a deep clean of the toilet every week with my bathroom clean. I’ll also wipe round (boys) every evening, just for wee splashes.

Wouldn't it be a lot less time-consuming simply to teach them to sit down for it?

elm26 · 20/03/2024 19:57

I deep clean once a week on the weekend when I'm doing the whole house. Includes the base of the toilet, the little indents at the side (not sure what they're called 😂).

2/3 times a week I'll spray the flush, the seat, underneath the seat and wipe over and pop a bit of bleach down before bed.

Katrinawaves · 20/03/2024 20:05

I squirt cleaner in mine every morning just before I brush my teeth, when I finish brushing my teeth, swish the loo with a silicone loo brush and flush, wipe down my bathroom sink with a damp cloth and that keeps the bathroom always looking guest ready with virtually no effort. We have a cleaner twice a week who will do a more detailed clean including wiping the seat and washing the bathroom floor.

EcstaticMarmalade · 20/03/2024 20:08

Quick wipe and bleach round the rim most days, proper clean once a week.

It helps though that I have a bathroom to myself.

It’s one of those things I just find easier to keep on top of by doing a little every day.

Margo2023 · 21/03/2024 01:36

I'm so surprised at the daily loo cleans! Especially with all the chemicals too and don't you go through a massive amount of wipes and sponges that have to be binned? I'd be worried about inhaling those so often. I'd like to know for those who don't use bleach or anti bac, what do you use instead and do you use disposable sponges for cleaning?

Margo2023 · 21/03/2024 01:38

And how does cleaning the U bend help? As surely that's what the flush cleans away and you wouldn't be exposed to germs from down there

whirlyhead · 21/03/2024 02:08

I have never deep cleaned a loo in my life. I did not even know this was a thing! My cleaner cleans our loos twice a week with organic toilet cleaner and that’s it! No bleach used ever. Me and my husband are really healthy though so I guess it hasn’t done us any harm.

even worse, I live in a country with water shortages so we often don’t flush the loo. The horror!

Mystro202 · 21/03/2024 02:53

Every day as I have young dcs. My ds tries to pee like Daddy (goes everywhere) 🤣

I put Harpic around the bowl every night as we go to bed in the ensuite. Also wipe over the flush handle and loo seat with antibacterial wipes. Same in the downstairs loo every other day. Same in main bathroom Foster Son uses every day Harpic around the bowl and antibacterial wipes on flush and seat. It has all day to work before FS comes home from college. Top floor loo in the shower room about once a week as not used much.

I’m impressed you sleep in the ensuite. It must be huge!

Theoldwoman · 21/03/2024 03:58

Oh and I unclip the seat once a week and soak in the bath with a bit of bleach.

Once every few weeks. I also use biodegradable plant-based cleaning products rather than bleach. Just me and my partner here. Toilet seems clean enough with that routine. I'm surprised people are cleaning so much, it seems like an overreaction.

Same here. I must be a pig yet I can't remember the last time one of us had anything gastro related.
We don't use cleaning products as we have a septic tank and it would destroy it.
Poo splots are cleaned by the splot maker immediately.
A scrub with (shock horror) the toilet brush probably every two weeks. There is only two of us though and we are out of the house every weekday.
Wipe around with a cloth whenever it looks dusty
I'm sitting on it not eating my dinner off it.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 21/03/2024 04:47

Every day.

Elephantswillnever · 21/03/2024 05:28

Daily with a quick spray and a wipe. Of seat , flush etc. I use harpic black and leave overnight to give loo a deep clean maybe once a week. One of the best things I did when doing the bathroom is getting the joiner to put a little cupboard into bath surround and I keep cleaning stuff in there. Much more likely to use it if I don’t have to go downstairs.
