How much did your engagement ring cost?

Curious to know how much people generally pay for engagement rings...

I was briefly engaged when i was young and stupid, and the ring cost a couple of hundred £s as we were skint students. Im in a long term relationship now and expecting a proposal at some ppint soonish (he took me to a jewellers to measure my ring finger 😂) so been having a look at styles etc, and shocked at the cost of some of them!

I think our budget is around 1-3k, not sure if this is above or below average?

Mine was about £2.5k waaaay back in 2005. I say the same ring in the same shop for sale, same quality diamond etc (it's a very dull solitaire, beautiful but not what I would choose!) and the cost today was absolute madness!

I'd go for a lab grown diamond and coloured stones now and £2k should get you a really lovely ring!

ChatterMonkey · 18/03/2024 18:58

Yeah was looking at lab grown diamonds (and showed them to dp!), looks like the best way to get bang for your buck, so to speak!

It's not the cost ,it's what it means.

Did not have one.
Had a holiday instead.

Mine was from blue Nile. Built by DH on there and I think around £1800 back in 2011, not sure what it would be now, but I love it

MagentaRocks · 18/03/2024 19:01

Mine was less than £300. My now DH knew I wouldn’t want him to spend thousands on a ring. He also picked it himself and it was a bit different to the normal solitaire ring.

Third thread.
Weird.

Didn't have one.

Bdaybdilemma · 18/03/2024 19:02

£200 5 years ago. Any more would have been totally stupid in our situation.

icelollycraving · 18/03/2024 19:04

We got my engagement and wedding ring at the same time. They cost quite a lot but I love them and they go with everything! 😁
Buy a ring you love and can afford, it doesn’t do well to compare. Some people wear no ring, some spend a few hundred and some people spend £20k.

caringcarer · 18/03/2024 19:06

Mine cost £3500 in 2005. It's insured for well over double that. At the time it was a month's salary for DH. I think traditionally men used to spend 2-3 month's salary on an engagement ring but that would be excessive in my opinion. I think a month's salary is enough or less if you like something cheaper. If I were to do it again I'd pick an antique pre used ring.

Stringagal · 18/03/2024 19:07

About £3k in 2005, baguette cut diamond. I still love it (and him!) but wouldn’t spend that much on one now as we’ve got more grown up boring things to pay for.

Namerchanger1 · 18/03/2024 19:09

Mine was £12k but is a ruby centre with diamonds around the outside (like Kate’s one). We designed it and had it made ourselves and the insurance valuation lists it as £26k!!!! Certainly would not have paid that for mine!

wejammin · 18/03/2024 19:09

£500, 12 years ago. It's a ruby not a diamond, in a vintage art deco setting, and I adore it.

mitogoshi · 18/03/2024 19:10

£3k, recent, local independent jewellery maker, chose diamonds in Birmingham separately. Lovely work, and completely unique

WeightoftheWorld · 18/03/2024 19:10

About £1k in 2012. After house and car, it's still the next most expensive thing we've ever bought.

GameOfJones · 18/03/2024 19:10

About £1k and I still love it. DH chose is but knew which styles I liked and he picked well.

If I had my time again I'd go for a lab grown diamond.

TheGhostOfKatesProlapse · 18/03/2024 19:12

First one was £1k and second was £5k

Weird.

@needmorelego i started my thread after seeing one of the other threads that piqued my interest in this question. And them after i started this one, i saw the other engagement ring thread and realised that a third thread seemed a bit strange... 😳

£5 second hand silver ring. Loved it, and still love him 14 years later 🙂

Funderthighs · 18/03/2024 19:15

Mine was £80, 25 years ago. I still love it. It’s not about the cost, it’s the sentiment behind it. (That’s not a dig at anyone with an expensive ring, it just doesn’t matter to me personally 😉).

Upallnight2 · 18/03/2024 19:16

£300 back in 2009 I think. I don't actually wear it anyway because with my wedding ring it hurts the webby bit at the top of my fingers 😆

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 18/03/2024 19:17

Found a beautiful old European cut 2ct solitaire on eBay, from 1890, France. Met the guy selling it and he had no idea what it was. Paid £3k. Took to jewellers, valued at £22.5k. Woohoo!

MamaBear2210T · 18/03/2024 19:17

2.5k 2017
